I bought a new Probe GT 5-speed in 94 and it was my daily driver for 16 years. I didnt care for Gen 1, but Gen 2 was strikingly beautiful in GT trim. I wouldn't call it bullet proof but over all it was reliable. I don't get all the snickering over the name. Ford had a series of experimental and concept cars in the 80s and 90s called Probes. They were all very cool in their own way. Some of them even looked like futuristic space probes. So when it became clear that it wouldn't be called Mustang, Ford just applied the nomenclature of the concept and experimental cars. I always liked the name -- sounds very futuristic and high tech..

Thanks for sharing your experience with the car. I understand probe was the name of a concept car in the in the early 80's it also is a double entendre. When given a choice of all the possible names a car can be given one should not use the double entendre regardless of how juvenile the other interpretation may be. If it's only 10% of potential buyers that will think along those lines that's way too many.

I didn't write a letter but I was one of those that thought a FWD Mustang with a turbo four was an abomination. The bosses at Ford were wise to listen up and not make the Probe the new Mustang. Ford did need the Probe not only because they had invested so much money into it but also because they really didn't have a car to compete with the Toyota Celica, Dodge Daytona, or Mitsubishi Eclipse from that time. The Probe fit into that class perfectly.

All they had to do was make it RWD and it would be hanging with 240s. Well, beating them. They could've gone with Maverick for the name, OR thrown darts at letters blindfolded to come up with a better name. I like the 2nd gen exclusively, more refined, better looking, more options, paint colors were wild. They put a lot into it, both Ford and Mazda.

I don't think it was bad as it was. I think the launch (awful) and the fact that the market for sports cars was shrinking is what did it in. SUV's were becoming popular with younger buyers.

I have owned a 94 Probe GT for over 3 years. Fixed a lot of things on it and it is now looking great inside, outside and under the hood. Great car and I love it! Great handling car with enough power to have fun when you really get on it. I replaced the entire exhaust system on it and it tends to turn heads wherever I go. Magnaflow for the win :) I have been approached more than once at the gas station with people asking what the car is or commenting how they haven't seen a Probe in ages! Currently restoring a 95 Probe GT with my father we picked up a few months ago. It wasn't running when we got it, but it is now! Ford Probe Facebook groups are a great community and resource. We are always helping each other out and discussing Probe stuff!

My sister had a late 90s probe, she never changed the the oil even once.she would rarely even top up the oil. I owned the Probe twin, actually a 1988 Mazda 626 GT hatchback. Bought used in '92, with about 60k miles on it. Cons: A/C was leaky; trans axle boots would split every 2 - 3 yrs; motorized passive restraint that eventually failed, so used the separate lap belt; frameless windows with tracking clips that eventually rusted off. Pros: 2.2L intercooled turbo loved to rev, tight R&P steering, 5 spd manual, never failed to start; 3-grade adjustable suspension; easy to maintain. Had 240k on it after 20 yrs, never had to replace the (hydraulic) clutch, thanks to the low gearing of 1st gear. With a light weight body, the hatchback was very utilitarian, with flat-folding rear seats. It was a delight to drive, and performed much better than some friends' sports cars I drove back in the day. Someone once posted a YT video of driving one at 140 mph. Interior was head and shoulders above it's Probe twin. Really hated to part with it after 20 yrs.

I ordered a new 93 GT and later purchased a red 94 GT, both 5 speeds. These cars handled well but really needed another 40hp. The SHO engine at the time would have been a good fit, however that would have created a rival to the Mustang, FWD and all. I have fond memories of my Probe GT's regardless of its not so well thought out name.

They didn't need the SHO engine. They needed the Japanese version of the same V6. Bolts in. Even runs on the stock ECU. If you want all the beans, headers an Maf swap(w/ecu). Lighter engine and the hood fits. It has it's own intake tricks. Sub 6 seconds to 60, over 7k rpm. SHO was around 7 - 60

What really damaged the Probe's reputation is that it was underpowered compared with several of its competitors. Even the Nissan 240 SX overpowered it by ten to fifteen horsepower once Nissan upgraded the 2.4 to the twin cam version putting out 155 hp. The Celica All Trac Turbo was a 200 hp beast. But the car that was really putting the smack down on the Ford Probe were the Diamond Star twins, which depending on the model and year, was putting out anywhere from 195 to 210 hp. These could also be had with all wheel drive, as with the Toyota Celica All Trac Turbo. Ford could have put the 220 hp SHO V6 engine in this and really wiped out the competition.

The Probe was knee capped by Ford because they didn't want a car that was faster than the Mustang. By the time the 2nd gen Probe came along Ford had a monster hit with the Explorer and they let the Probe die on the vine. It really was the correct biz decision. SUVs and pickups were machines that printed money for the car companies. Today not a single car company sells a hatchback coupe in the US.

The 1989 model looked ok as a GT and performance and all was good for a 4 cylinder car. The '93 up GT really improved its looks and interior and all but the performance didn't match is good looks. I stuck with my reliable 10k '86 Fox 5.0 5speed and won lots of races and had tons of cheap fun and mods. Probes were much more expensive to fix like a Mazda and where are they all now? I think the early ones had lots of materials problems that hopefully got worked out. Ford was zero help even for things that seemed like they should be a class action lawsuit. Last Ford I owned and moved on to better things.

My uncle bought a new Mazda MX6 in about 93-94. That was a very good looking car with very attractive styling and a sporty ride. The MX6 was the twin to the Probe. But overall I was never a big fan of the Ford Probe.

My first car 1995 Probe GT black 5 speed. Graduated in 07 and that car was hot! chicks loved it lol. 5 speed , intake, exhaust, bought it with only 40k on it. Drove it into the ground at 160k burned two clutches racing that thing and acting like a fool, did take an lt1 tTans Am from a roll. Truly was a great car. Honestly this is one of the only ford cars to threaten the Stang, and I think that says a lot. in fact she's still on KZbin , kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXWQXmetgtF6i8ksi=NuTo2u_puAFJHFMY can't believe this video has 81k views hah

I was at the drag strip mucho years ago and we are bsing in the pits and buddy want to run me in his gen 1 probe gt. I'm saying sure in my v8 ox 5.0 with a blower on. I hole shot the he'll out of him and then he steam rolls me at about 880 and blows past me. Yup big turbo built engine under hood etc. Car broke 130 in the quarter and looked completely stock. Can't fool anyone twice with that gig. Anyway, that's me Probe story 😁

I think they could have brought back the falcon name and it would have fit the car. Had a blue 1989 lx I bought in 1990 after I totaled my 1988.5 Escort GT. Miss both those cars

I liked the look of this car, but it needed a few things. A better name (Torino maybe?), a twin turbo V6 - and AWD. Oh hell, Ford is going to make an SUV with that info. Dayum.

You would think right? Falcon was available, they could have went with Sportster. They went to meanless alphanumeric designations with other cars. Any of those would have been a better choice.

@@TonysFordsandMustangs It is a name as bad as Edsel..... If they had not turned off folks at the start with it being a ,"replacement Mustang." It would have had a better sales run and life. It's not like they didn't have a ton of past Ford names to work with? It's also strange they never came out with a Mercury version? Which was the better seller by the way? The MX6 or the Probe?

Oh my, a Ford that didn’t fall apart when it was driven. Who would have imagined. Most people who buy Fix Or Repair Daily would never appreciate this car.ill bet when you say Ford engineers got involved in the later version, the car matched the other crap Ford was famous for. Ford hit its’ high point with the model A.

Calling a Probe a Mustang is just as bad as calling that POS electric thing a Mustang. Plenty of names we can call cars, let's not insult the legacy of the classics. Probe isn't that bad looking of a car. Would be better of it was rear wheel drove with a 4 banger turbo or supercharged v6. I'm one of those old school muscle cars enthusiasts. Can't stand front wheel drives
