I just find it deeply melancholic in a way the pogues version isn't. I feel like the veteran in the song is explaining his experiences and feelings while putting thought behind each word. It's just pure sadness and trauma. Meanwhile the pougues version is equally emotional, but the veteran is drunk and copes through substance abuse. He's bitter after seeing war and he's barely getting on with life while barely coping. He's drunkenly spewing his bitter thoughts at you. And its just as sad, but in a different way.
