No words can express what an inspiration Shane was for the downtrodden, abused, misunderstood, homeless, addicts, and love of poignant, meaningful music created by him and his band members! A true giant alongside Dylan, Cave, Sinead and many others. A sad loss, but an inevitable loss.😔

Dylan has had more of his songs covered than any other artist on the planet, maybe only the Bee Gees could get near him (dare I mention them here) and he certainly never covered or stole any other artist's work, maybe in his early days, Woody Guthrie was his inspiration. Many of Shane's songs were covers, brilliant versions no doubt, but please don't knock the greatest poet, songwriter of our times. @@ccahill2322

@Hotforteacher327, I do not think any poet is free from pain; if they were they would not be poets. Nor is any of the, seemingly few, who know the truth: this is all, this is heaven and hell. When the current switches off it's good night. There is no other "life."

@@robertloader9826, You did not understand what I wrote. And you can quote me on that in 50 years, or five billion years. You, like "believers" can not get past the "reality" which consciousness "experiences" is made up of-- things which are not real. There is no "future" for human consciousness once the essential current is switched off. With the death of every human a Universe dies. With the death of every sentient being a Universe dies. I just lost a cousin, Dominic Brosnan, in Fenit, on Ireland's west coast, in the Kingdom of Kerry. He was just 51, and he quite literally loved the life that the Pogues sang about... Irishmen in London, surviving and escaping poverty, but drinking and womanising and falling and rising and falling again, losing themselves in the gold rush, the bombings, and the homesickness... You got home eventually Dom, and all things considered, the scrapes and cells and broken bones, to pass in your sleep on Irelands wild west coast ain't too bad cousin... I'll see you again someday.

My mother was a Moriarty from Fenit. Her brother (my uncle) spent years working in England. A precarious life for sure. The stories he told us of dangerous job, fights, drinking would make you wonder how anyone survived. But he did survive and returned to Ireland to live and work in Dublin. Tough times made tough people.

To me, this is the Pogues masterpiece. The tune and arrangement at first appear maudlin but this is deceptive as the quality of the lyrics is stunning and the song draws you in immediately. It seems to me that what is evoked is a viseral vision of war, reimagined by booze or perhaps PTSD. This is followed by the shock of returning home to find that both you and the life you knew are damaged (or at least changed) forever . As in many great songs there is enough ambiguity in the ideas to allow the listener to create their own images and memories. This has such universal resonance that transends the banalities of our daily, humdrum existance. Such is Shane McGowan's (and the Pogues) legacy. Respect.

I'm Irish on my mother's side of the family (grand-mother, to be precise). I visited Ireland for the fist time 10 years ago and for some inexplicable reason, I felt....that I belonged there. There was something about the place that felt like home. Late one afternoon, as my wife and I were exploring Kilkenny County by the fading light of a setting sun, we passed a cemetery with the granite Celtic crosses looming large and ominous above everything else. An ice-cold shiver ran up my spine. It was like all the dead in that lonely cemetery had all stood up and were watching us forebodingly as we went past. I said to my wife "I don't care what happens, we are NOT coming back this way tonight". I swear I could feel the reproachful eyes of the Dead upon me. Maybe they were admonishing me to not leave.

@@toontown88 About A Pair of Brown Eyes "A Pair of Brown Eyes" is a single by The Pogues, released on 18 March 1985. The single was their first to make the UK Top 100, peaking at Number 72. It featured on the band's second album, Rum Sodomy & the Lash, and was composed by Pogues front man Shane MacGowan. Its melody is loosely based on that of “Wild Mountain Thyme" (also known as "Will Ye Go Lassie Go"), a song by Francis McPeake in a traditional Irish folk style. The song references the Johnny Cash version of the song A Thing Called Love: "And on the jukebox Johnny sang / About a thing called love". So, I heard am interview with Johnny Cash mention it, a quick internet search and quickly find links to the reference that MacGowan refers to Johnny Cash. One summer evening drunk to hell I stood there nearly lifeless An old man in the corner sang Where the water lilies grow And on the jukebox johnny sang About a thing called love And its how are you kid and whats your name And how would you bloody know? In blood and death neath a screaming sky I lay down on the ground And the arms and legs of other men Were scattered all around Some cursed, some prayed, some prayed then cursed Then prayed and bled some more And the only thing that I could see Was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me But when we got back, labeled parts one to three There was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me And a rovin, a rovin, a rovin I'll go For a pair of brown eyes I looked at him he looked at me All I could do was hate him While Ray and Philomena sang Of my elusive dream I saw the streams, the rolling hills Where his brown eyes were waiting And I thought about a pair of brown eyes That waited once for me So drunk to hell I left the place Sometimes crawling sometimes walking A hungry sound came across the breeze So I gave the walls a talking And I heard the sounds of long ago From the old canal And the birds were whistling in the trees Where the wind was gently laughing And a rovin, a rovin, a rovin I'll go A rovin, a rovin, a rovin I'll go And a rovin, a rovin, a rovin I'll go For a pair of brown eyes For a pair of brown eyes And a rovin, a rovin, a rovin I'll go And a rovin, a rovin, a rovin I'll go And a rovin, a rovin, a rovin I'll go For a pair of brown eyes For a pair of brown eyes

What is so beautiful is how the music carries Shane's voice, his being and his story. This kind of atmosphere you find in Ireland at home or in the public house, intiem, warm and carefree. I grew up in this atmosphere where song and music feeds your soul.

KSC Clinic I saw him meself and nothin but respect for MacGowan but that Tubridy lad is an awful tit, did you notice how he shat himself every time MacGowan opened his mouth for fear of what he might say, never let him finish talking, cut him off every chance he got..... Shane MacGowan is one of the best if not the very best song writer out there, show him a little respect RTÉ and take your head out of your arse. Shane MacGowan.... the most honest man in the room, hear him out.
