In 1887 the leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party Charles Stewart Parnell read a forged letter, supposedly written by himself, that implicated him in the murder of two government officials. The scandal that emerged led to the party facing a judicial enquiry over its conduct and putting the dream of Irish self governance in peril.

@@matthewhastings2568 Well, Parnell keeps coming up a lot as an inspiration to the various Jewish national movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries- primarily between Home Rule and Autonomism/Bundism/Zionism, as well as between Irish and Hebrew language revival. In the next video it's Michael Davitt who makes an appearance.

My only deep enough area of study in history is in Ireland (Especially in the 19th century, not particularly intentional), so it's weird watching an obscure historical video actually knowing the story. Though I guess Parnell was influential enough to contemporary politics that we can't consider it THAT obscure. Really well done btw. Told the beats about as accurately on any of me old lectures on the on him, with strong presentation and narration, fairplay.

It's interesting how a bag that would have been in police custody turned up with the letters It's interesting how The Nation newspaper was printed right beside Dublin Castle It's interesting how the Catholic/Protestant Church who were viciously against the Catholic/Protestant people ( who were United at the start of the land wars) came together along with Parnell to redirect the issue It's interesting that the first person to have a rent strike by the people was Cannon Burke Maybe this was a setup, and this was always going to be the outcome It's interesting how all the aristocracy who plundered Ireland, including James Stewart Parnell and were all bankrupt, including the Catholic church' came together to fight for our freedom I wonder if there was something going on behind the Green curtain
