Reason the navy sucked at the start of ww2 was due to us no really having one, we had some small patrol boats, and some less than 10 navy personal, whe even got a retired British vice admiral to come out of retirement and basically start the modern version of our navy training system, the British also gave us some mine clearance ships and that was our navy, most sailors here in South Africa where British citizens or British by decent and left to join the royal navy instead of the South African navy. Also South African railways still exists today, had plenty of name changes but was called spoornet (in English - trail network) and today is called Transnet Freight Rail, a bunch of companies joined together in a monopoly way with spoornet making up most of the modern company.

surprisingly South Africa DID have some major conributions to WW2. they were a major force in the skies, taking part in campaigns in Africa, Italy, the Balkans and even bombing Romania, Supplying the Warsaw uprising and intel flights ahead of the Red Army.

It really sucks that Hertzog stays in power during the course of the game, in real life he bet his political career on the Germans not going to war, once war started he refused to step down so parliament voted him out and they claimed that they couldn't trust such an man that broke his word, so they then voted Jan Smuts in (of second Boer war fame and ww1, although he did very violently end a white communist uprising in the outskirts of Johannesburg and the white communist groups died out right after and where replaced by black communists and the rich whites of Johannesburg claimed Smuts was a tyrant who shot,bombed and shelled the outskirts of their city and a few blocks of a nearby town the comunidts took over) he like Churchill where considered war hawks and they where always bringing up the Germans and that they couldn't be trusted and we should be ready for war, and once more like before Smuts destroyed his career here in South Africa by becoming a British field marshal witch alienated him from all Boere who had supported him for being a public hero from the second Boer war, and the British army disliked this foreigner becoming a field marshal so Smuts only had 1 friend in the UK government and that was Churchill, who got the king and queen to agree that should Churchill kick the bucket during the war that Smuts should then take over as pm of the empire and after the war Smuts did try to get re-elected as South African pm but since he had destroyed his reputation during the second world war he lost to the national party and he past away shortly afterwards and his United party broke apart without him their to hold it together and was mostly absorbed by the national party that would in a short time kick of the apartheid era. Yes their is a mod that allows Smuts to become pm since he does have an in game portrait but for some reason or another it never actually happens in game, tho I do believe the mod is outdated. And lastly to address the focus tree it seems the devs mixed the national party and the fascist party into the same thing and by turning fascist you also kick start apartheid, witch in real life wouldn't happen sure the national party did start apartheid but the fascist party was and still is considered a joke and politicians at the time litterly told their followers to attack and spit on the Nazi supporters and that basically ended their hopes at becoming a major South African political movement especially after Smuts destroyed the white communist uprising. The national party part of the fascist tree also contain some Boer republic stuff witch during ww2 their was a idea for us to leave the empire and return to a Boer republic but that was a pipe dream although it is hinted at in the focus tree, but only in one focus and quickly disappears and suddenly becomes apartheid and fascism. Also South Africa does have the most railways in the whole of Africa but in our modern country most are going to ruin and they where originally build to get the minirals and ore's from the interior to the coast where they could go elsewhere and in the gap the South African railways have left Nigeria and Egypt has started building more and more railways, although South Africans have started asking the government to start investing more into the railways again like it did pre-94. During the first world war our navy was created but it did mostly transport duty, transport of men and transport of materials, during the second world war our admiral guy (Rear-Admiral Guy Halifax) was brought out of retirement and orderd to serve as our highest ranking naval officer and he would ask the British for more ships and was given 3 minesweepers that would sweep for mines in the Mediterranean sea, although most English South Africans did go serve on British ships and quite a few sank with the British task force z (the carrier battleship combo that the British sent over to try and scare the Japanese navy away from the Dutch and British colonies, they where sunk by land bombers, about a quarter to half of all crew where South Africans) the South African railways company is still around it was called the South African railway company (SAR) and in the apartheid years it became South African railways and harbours (SAR&H) in 81 and became South African transport service (SATS) a month after the previous name change and then in 1990 it became transnet that still is around to this day, back from when it started in the 1850's.
