Paralyzes progress indeed! Our tradition of oral story telling is among the main impediments to our development. We don't value documentation and don't even realize how indispensable that 'habit' is. I am a 28 year old Nigerian and I have read a lot about the story. Most of the info here is propaganda. John Okello was no different from Adolf Hitler. He was deeply racist, and had no qualms with shedding innocent blood. Scholars still debate whether the massacre he led in the Arab neighborhoods of Zanzibar could be classified as genocide. What is not up for debate is that it is a disgusting act. It is to the discredit of revolutionaries like Nyerere and Babou that they benefited from this crime against humanity.

I had never heard of this Field Marshall,thank you for telling us this powerful and sad ending story of one of many overlooked African Historical figures.Field Marshall John Okello was a young charismatic leader who rose up against Arab oppression and won,but he did not have proper ideological training to have kept ideals of a Revolution in tact.So he let fame get to his head and became more a cult of personality rather than a full liberator. In fact, I never read or heard of the exploits of the man before I encountered the story from the documentary on this channel. Very interesting. I'd heard of the Zanzibari Revolution but not of John Gideon Okello. The Zanzibari people were clearly better off without their Arab overlords, and - sadly - better off without John Gideon Okello, a man who would clearly have morphed into another bloodthirsty dictator given half a chance. As for Revolution, it's a perfect illustration of Auden's observation that: Those to whom evil is done do evil in return. The Sultan should count himself lucky he got out alive.

Okello's Racial cleansing was very necessary & ensured the children of Africans will never experience racism in their own native land. It was also a permanent reminder to those 🐖 skins that there are consequences for killing & enslaving people. After the revolution many Kenyans invested in Zanzibar & Mombasa. Today Kenyan Banks like KCB & Equity operate on the island. Kenyan companies like Sportpesa have also invested heavily in sports on the island. Kenyan owned hotel chains also employ a good number of Zanzibaris & our retail companies like Naivas will soon open business in Zanzibar. Zanzibar is far much richer & developed today than the poverty stricken island it was in the 60s. Zanzibar's GDP per capita today is 10 times bigger than it was in 1950. Which means an average Zanzibari is 10 times richer today than in 1950.

In fact the core factor that led to the revolution was wealth inequality & mass corruption by the Sultan regime. The guy only employed Arabs & his family members. The island was very poor at the time with the majority of the people living under a complete monopoly. After the revolution Zanzibaris can now freely own businesses & get employment easily on the island & in mainland Tanzania. In fact the current president of Tanzania is a Zanzibari woman. That was unheard of before the revolution. Today the transport system in Zanzibar is better, the roads are better & more people are connected to electricity than ever before. They even have modern ferry services instead of the dangerous 1960s canoes they used. Tourism is also bigger in Zanzibar today than it ever was with the newly expanded airport. Today Zanzibar is a global tourism hub in East Africa. These are things the corrupt racist sultan slave regime could never achieve, they only knew how to exploit free labour to enrich a few while the majority remained economic slaves. Today Zanzibaris earn actual salaries not tokens.

I am compiling what I hope will be a more precise version of events, it is even more frustrating because every possible resource I come across is framed in a certain direction. Nobody can say for sure whether he rebelled because he actually cared or wanted to be ruler himself. Julius Nyerere, Oscar and Kassim Hanga organised the Zanzibar Revolution to overthow the newly independent state of Zanzibar from the British..the new government was led by Mohamed Shamte an African all government ministers were "Africans" except for one Mohsin Barwani who had Arabian descent but his father was a Zanzibari by birth. To say they overthrew Arabs is missing the pieces..Okello was used by Nyerere to hide his tracks as if the revolution was an inside work. You also fail to say up to 20,000 people were slaughtered including your fellow "Africans" in the pocess by fellow Africans.. To get to the bottom of this issue read the book written by a Zanzibari Kwa Heri Ukoloni Kwa Heri Uhuru which chronicles by events of 1964 Zanzibar revolution by some surviving individuals who took part in the genocide...after the revolution Okello was put in plane to Dar es Salaam towards Kampala. When he arrived in Kampala he started to brag about his revolution in Zanzibar..later on Obote sent him to an army barracks near the Kenya border where he disappeared forever..

Amin arrested him supposedly because he didn't like the idea of two field marshals and the fear that Okello might join the rebels who were training in Sudan to come and overthrow him. The 'revolution' (arguably state-capture) was organised by Karume in 1964 but Okello preempted it and took it too far by murdering an estimated 20,000 largely defenceless civilians. His actions were extremely embarrassing to both Karume and Julius Nyerere (which is why they are not so eager to acknowledge him in Tanzania - the fact that he is a foreigner (Ugandan) certainly plays a part). Your false perception of Okello ending slavery and the date that slavery actually ended on the island is out by about 70 years!

Which way some may view him he was a great African leader and revolutionary. I read about him in the DRUM magazine of those days in 1964 when I was in the primary school in Gusau Sokoto province of Sardauna days now Zamfara state where i was born and bred. He Led the revolution that drove the Arab slave drivers who had no respect for the native Black Zanzibaris. His name will soon be written in gold.
