The skills these workers had back then for precise stone work with pillars, windows etc., to build these beautiful buildings, I find amazing with no JCB's, cranes, steel scaffolding, cement/concrete mixers and all the other modern tools and vehicles used today. Where I live on the Isle of Wight, we have our own Carisbrooke Castle, which I have visited a few times, with the precise stone blocks put together with no cementing, and the gaps between them so tight, I couldn't put a fag (cigarette) paper between the blocks by the skilled stone workers, and the whole place is mostly intact

That's very true - a group of experimental archaeologists are currently building a castle from scratch using original techniques and technology. The castle project is called Guedilon in France, (or something like that!) I recommend looking it up online :)

Since this was pretty much entirely rebuilt in the 19th century I'd put money on the brick being victorian, but who knows!

I can certainly look into it. I do have a 13th century jousting video which talks about the armour in depth. The armour of the jousters was pretty much the same as on the battlefield in the 13th century

The houses are within the Inner Bailey of the castle, not the Outer Bailey... the information stone at the entrance of the castle demonstrates the Bailey's clearly.

Do you have in plan to visit Southend area and put Hadleigh Castle on your KZbin map? Thames estuary is full of history and Hadleigh Castle was also featured 2012 Olympics Mountain biking competitions.

I did actually look at the idea of vising Hadleigh as it's quite an interesting (and under appreciated) castle, it's rather difficult for me to get to though. However, there are a couple places in the area that I'd like to visit so perhaps one day!
