I used shapechange in grim hollow for one my npc allies to party. The specifics of potions meant it was able take on giant undead army. Other was shapechange into a dragon twice once by potion craft. He soloed an lvl 20 adventuring day in in sitting and killed power lich by himself.

@@darcraven01I wondered too so I looked it up when you use shape change it changes your stats to whatever you turn into except your charisma wisdom intelligence so as a wizard you keep what are probably good stats for you and can turn into something strong in the other stats that’s your level or lower to give yourself amazing stats all around and gives you a lot of extra hp as you gain the hit dice of the creature and then excess damage goes onto you if the form takes too much damage while true polymorph allows you to turn yourself or someone/some object around you into something else wether it be an object or a creature any unwilling target gets to make a saving throw against this however so this will change your stats and to whatever you’ve been transformed into they are very similar but both have their uses it’s also worth noting that wizard is the only one with both and shape change is most likely for druids but wizards being wizards get it

@@darcraven01 well it makes sense why Druids wouldn’t be able to cast true polymorph since it can change others but giving other classes better shape shifting abilities would make Druids suck and it would also make true polymorph broken if you could choose wether or not someone keeps some of their stats or not cause someone who has low int wis or cha that would be lower than whatever there turning into could just keep their dump stats making them worse off where as allowing someone to turn into virtually anything but letting them keep superior stats would make it to where dumb but stronger creatures that have higher crs than 20 are now extremely smart along with having their immeasurable strengths

I never get to 18th level with a character, always starting new ones at 1 or 5, groups break down, people move away, have kids and get busy, or we're all so busy we can only meet up once every ~2 months and it takes us forever even when we do stick together. I forget that level 18/20 abilities like Spell Mastery and Signature Spell are a thing, because for decades they haven't been a thing for me, heck even getting to mid-levels has been rare, I've only been to level 14 twice. in decades. For this example I suppose he'd burn just 1 shield a turn, plus whatever spell he's casting, so only burning 2 spells a turn, vs the 16 spells per turn I was thinking about vs 10 enemies with 4 allies.

@@vitalyx9874 uh yeah so much, your backstory is going to have plenty of time to have been written out, you can try to "Add it to your backstory" all you want, but a DM has every right to say no, you cannot because your only trying to establish this now for power gaming purposes. if you bring it in from the beginning, a DM still has full ability to veto your "I saw a super scary creature that can kill an experienced adventurers of higher, but somehow i managed to see it and live as a child" kind of backstory, thats part of the DMs job, to keep a semblance of balance between players and/or the situations they are put in. thus why any DM worth their salt will never have this sprung upon them unknowingly.

​​@@snrpatatathat would be partially correct if you were polymorphed into one, but as said, the shapechange spell works differently, maintaining your mental stats (int, cha, and wis) and class features (including spellcasting), both RAW & RAI. War caster absolutely 100% works with this combo (and is a necessity anyways, given the advantage on concentration checks it provides) That said, the concentration part is also completely irrelevant, as you can still cast spells while concentrating. The only thing that is a limitation is that you can only have one concentration spell in effect at a time. Any other spells are still fair game. (So, yes, hold person wouldn't work, but booming blade would)

Yes! I am a DM who built an antagonist around this where the party thought she was originally a marilith but was actually a female human wizard that could cast that spell into that iconic form she is infamous for. So when the party thought she killed her I simply described what happened when you drop to 0 hp from shapechange and said, “welcome to stage 2 of this boss fight” as she begun to cast blade of disaster.

Doesn't change much, but the Marilith's Multiattack feature and the Bladesinger's Extra Attack feature are two different things. You can't replace an attack with a cantrip if you use Multiattack.

True Polymorph certainly gives it a run for its money though, but Shapechange generally isn’t as good as either of them.

​@@almondsai7214 Slight adjustment, you can wish for anything. However the wish spell will not punish you if you wish for the replication of a spell of 8th level or lower. If you attempt to wish for anything else that is not the replication of a spell you then have to succeed through a series of various checks after which you take a massive hit both in loss of health and negative stats to your characteristics. Also, if you wish for anything that's not replicating his spell of 8th level or lower you also have to deal with the monkey's paw that is your DM who is going to at their ability or own personal whim, try to replicate exactly what you wished for in the easiest way to achieve the goal, which can just as easily screw you or the party.

My problem is you do technically have to have seen a Marilith before in order to Shapechange into it, so unless your DM is lenient about that or your party encountered a Marilith (very unlikely) and survived (even more unlikely), a new strategy will have to be employed. (That quote was from a question about grappling, but is applicable). And for reference extra attack says: "You can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the *Attack action* on your turn" Extra attack requires attack action, multiattack is not the attack action, therefore multiattack is not Extra attack and benefits of Extra attack for not apply per RAW. If your DM allows it more power to them, but we can't consider every personal ruling and house rule when discussing online and have to assume only printed rules are used.

An answer without a question is a statement, the context of the question doesn't matter. SAC tend not to add new entries to answer questions it already has, so there is no point in it addressing every specific feature that requires the attack action. The MM also indicates mutiattack is not the attack action "When a monster takes its action, it can choose from the options in the Actions section of its stat block *or* use one of the actions available to all creatures." Multiattack is an option in it's stats, attack is available to all creatures, and they are *not* the same. Extra attack requires the attack action, so forget rulings making it explicitly clear, the rules themselves wouldn't allow it.

Slight error, no spell casting for Shapechanged creatures. So, no GFB, silvery bards or shield. BUT! You do get the Marelith’s Parry (pseudo-shield) and Song of Defense (for all the spell slots you aren’t using)

Not quite. If you are referring to this: "You transform into an average example of that creature, one without any class levels or the Spellcasting trait." That only applies to gaining any Inherent spellcasting of the creature itself, but doesn't apply to your own. Don`t forget this part: "You retain the benefit of any features from your class, race, or other source and can use them, provided that your new form is physically capable of doing so." As spellcasting is a class feature, you would absolutely retain it, as well as your original races features such as the Shadar-Kai teleport as an example.

The 28 AC isn’t total so long as there is turns and u have spells lots u can add +5 to your AC again and again. If u picked shield to be one of your free cast spells at lvl 18 then u actually can get infinite AC by just bringing along additional creatures (like ants, cats, chickens whatever) to have turns.
