Disney Plus is one of the biggest streamers in the world, but it has some trouble launching shows not based on their biggest properties. In this video I go over shows they've canceled so far and what they can tell us about the state of Disney.

Removing content from a streaming service is non-sensical. It costs them nothing to keep them there. They could just have a category for abandoned stuff they don't want to highlight because they might think its not good enough. Like, "The Archives". Or something.

Even it doesn't help that the original heads at Disney+ decided to move _Love, Victor_ from Disney+ to Hulu cause from their POV they thought it was to edgy on Disney+, yet they had the Marvel, Star Wars, Nat Geo and the Simpsons content which were in the TV-14/PG-13 rating so it was a double standard reasoning.
@poisonedyoyo

It's not about it working. Disney has a brand to uphold. There was once going to be a procession where all the Disney princesses were pushing strollers at Disney World but the concept was scrapped because someone pointed out that this would imply that the princesses had sex, and Disney doesn't want to do that. They probably wouldn't care NOW, in 2022, with their ridiculous gromming efforts, but back then they didn't, and taking a pre/early teen like Lizzie McGuire and showing a birth scene of her in her thirties, yeah, no, thanks. I haven't seen it but since Raven's Home airs on Disney Channel, I'd say that's more the direction they should've gone with Lizzie McGuire, only there is one caveat to that, they do not want content that could just air on Disney Channel to be riginals on Disney+. After all, Disney Channel needs its purpose, it releases in general the best television content for the company, but yeah. As soon as I heard the Lizzie McGuire stuff was going in a very adult direction, like not even just portraying the characters as adults, literally dealing with themes I'd rather not, I didn't want it anymore. It's bad enough to see TRAILERS for Hulu playing in front of KZbin videos, very disgusting stuff, for Disney to do that to Lizzie McGuire would be a complete disgrace. Not that Disney hasn't disgraced themselves aplenty. The sequel to Frozen...they screwed up Anna, like what the heck? Then there's High School Musical the Musical the Series, where they once again disrespected Frozen. Pixar has also fallen off the wayside with their last four movies, although Elio and Inside Out 2 are good on paper at the very least.

I think of such things as public domain at this point. Problem is, though, they often get pulled because of rights issues. If they're trying for a tax write off is better to make the show disappear as much as possible. And if they're trying to avoid artist's residuals, then making the work public domain could violate multiple contracts. Also, if the project was just shelved, they may be selling the distribution rights elsewhere.

Okay so, allow me to introduce you to two current animated shows. One of them is made from Dave Povenmire who brought us Phineas and Ferb. This one is called Hamster and Gretel and is really good. Honestly, Kevin looks a lot like Jeremy even wearing his color scheme. The other show is The Ghost and Molly McGree, a bit weird but the episodes are at least worth going through once. Firebuds also just dropped on there and I'm liking it, especially after Cars on the Road was dealing too much with scare factor and adult things. CArs 3 also has this problem, it has lost the fun. I was fine enough with it on the big screen but home viewing, no thanks. But Firebuds, that's something for sure, only seen one episode though but yeah. Monsters at Work is coming back next year, Zootopia+ is on the way in November, and on TOP of that, back in December 2020, Disney announced there would be WDAS and Pixar animated films brought to the service over the next ten years, released there as originals. At the time, they hadn't counted on Luca and Turning Red being among that number, but clearly they are counted. I believe they said 15 from those studios together over the next ten years but you can check if you want. That means that number from BOTH, not from each. Maybe they said ten of those over the next ten years though, that makes more sense. But they definitely said 15 series. So far there has been and will be: Cars on the Road, Zootopia+, Iwaju, Baymax, Dug Days, Tiana, Moana, Win or Lose.

Anybody remember how we were supposed to get a new Lizzie McGuire show? They had footage of that in the trailer for Disney+'s launch day! Or how about the new shorts for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit? I was super eager to see the bunny get some love outside of the Epic Mickey games. Heck, why'd they cancel that Kingdom Keepers movie? I used to love the books when I was younger, I would've loved to see it brought to life on the big / small screen. Ugh, I hate how safe Disney plays it these days. Especially since their 'kid friendly' excuse is long gone with stuff like Daredevil and Deadpool on Disney+ now. For the record, still waiting for the Alien and Predator movies to be added as well.

I would've liked them to make Peter and the Stracatchers a Disney+ movie. Well, sort of. There's only one good Disney+ original movie so far, The Secret Society of Second-Born Royals. There are a couple that were acceptable and like good enough for a single viewing, well three actually, Chip and Dale being one. But an actual movie can't be built on cameos. Anyhow, Peter and the Starctachers was greenlit, it had the Hunger Games director, but LOOK, ten years after Hunger Games came out, this still isn't a thing! (The author of Kingdom Keepers is one of the co-writers of Peter and the Starcatchers.) Also, Oz the Great and Powerful was supposed to be a trilogy, second movie still not out yet, and first one not on Disney+. It was Joey King's movie debut. She's come a lont way, now has been in The Kissing Booth and Bullet Train.

From what I can tell, a lot of their family content can easily or should have season twos. Monsters at Work season two was announced for next year. Chip and DAle Park Life should have one. Dunno when though. But when you have season two of Mighty Ducks GAme Changers, Big Shot, AND The Mysterious Benedict Society all debuting int he span of one month, I'd say that's how it is. I would say Dairy of a Future Presdient lasted long enough, two seasons is what you can expect. Yes, HSMTS is suosedly getting a fourth one, but really it should've stopped at two. Technically the second season had some stuff it really shouldn't have, had to skip things, but then they went and disrespected Frozen. That is NOT acceptable. After that atrocious second episode of season three, I ran for the hills, never clicking on anything related to that show again. Except that one song that ended season two but I'll watch it here on KZbin.

How does Netflix keep alfoat? Peole complain left and right or say they have nothing of interest for months, then as soon as a new Stranger Things/Umbrella Academy/Cobra Kai season are out, they're back to praising Netflix again even though they seem to be not realizing that there will likely be another period of nothing like that especially with those shows released so close together. On the one hand, I absolutely want more original dramatic programming, not just on Disney+, but across television in general. On the other hand, I sometimes think that the only thing that has prevented Disney from making even bigger mis-steps than it already has is the tenuous fear of damaging their brand(s). About streaming services removing movies/shows completely, I think there was some article/video that pointed out the fact that due to the fact that since streaming service and online/digital publication of movies is predominate, we barely use DVD/VHS or stuff like that, so for most people, the only copy of a film is found on a streaming service, it is literally removing these movies and shows from the public domain. When you remove 80s films from there its mostly fine because there's phsyical copies, but these movies and shows will be forgotten and disappear into nothingness cuz there are few physical copies of them that would be out there.

On the Lizzie Maguire one: it simply speaks to where the service was at the time. Disney’s game plan was to put some of their more mature content onto Hulu, which not only resulted in the Lizzie Maguire cancellation (likely because that show is already very associated with Disney and they assumed it would be awkward to have it on Hulu), but also the Love Victor controversy, where the teen comedy-drama was moved to Hulu because it was more mature and led to accusations of homophobia. In recent months, however, many of Disney’s financial investors have opined that, now that Hulu is primarily owned by Disney, they can fold it into Disney+ and operate it as a single streaming service. Adding the mature function and the Marvel Netflix shows was likely a test of that capability, as well as them deciding it was more viable to have the entire MCU made by Disney in one location. And it was clearly a success, as Bob Chapek has said that folding Hulu into Disney+ is a long-term goal, albeit not wholly possible due to Universal maintaining a third of the company’s stake.

If they really want to make a Disney+ original that the whole family could enjoy they definitely need to do more book based movies/shows (imo) there are tons of books they can profit off of books like Kingdom Keepers and Percy Jackson and even wimpy kid are great examples (and hopefully Percy Jackson does good enough that they continue to make originals) I REALLY want to see how they would make a kingdom keepers show cause if done right they can make a lot money off of that just think every time you go to a Disney theme park there would be little easter eggs from the show and merchandise you can buy Would 100% genius on their part

A serial adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan books can be a huge hit for Disney Plus. It’s wonderful that a French graphic novel series about Tarzan came into French comic stores last year, which was when the ERB Tarzan books finally became public domain in much of the world, except for the USA. Also helping is that a Dynamite comic book series, itself a contemporary reboot of its previous Disney-inspired Lord of the Jungle comic, is coming into comic stores this November.

The Earthsea series could have potential. It’s high fantasy in a way that evokes Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, with far, far less graphic content and the IP does have fans. The source material ticks the diversity box, with Earthsea populated by different races with varied cultures fleshed out by the worldbuilding and later entries exploring the setting from a more feminist angle. Indeed, one of the few screen adaptations has whitewashing as its main criticism. The most recent adaptation was the 2006 Studio Ghibli film, which while its a decent film if not one of the studio’s better ones, isn’t a strong adaptation of the books as it takes plots and character from various books in an unexpected way.

Disney's main problem is making EVERYTHING child friendly. It's not unique to Disney either. I've seen shows that were made for really an adult audience, but okay for children, end up being made for what adults think children understand. I'd argue that the BBC in the UK has fallen into this Trap, killing shows stone dead. Kids don't actually like being talked down to, especially when they are in or closing in on their teens

My biggest problem with streaming services, isn't that it cancels shows. That's inevitable, at least if NCIS or Law & Order aren't in your title. It's that services like Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock don't include their studios back catalogs. I don't mean shows previously licensed to other services. I mean shows like the Six Million Dollar Man not being on Peacock or the 1950s Disney show Zorro being (almost) not on Disney+. I say almost about Zorro because while they have a B&W film taken from the first 8 episodes, the series itself was upwards of 80 episodes. I think I understand why that is. My conjecture is that contracts for actors and music didn't contemplate streaming. They didn't even include home video releases until the 80s or 90s, That means it's only practical to go back to get releases for shows that were popular enough to justify the expense. I understand it, but I don't have to like it. What I really don't like is a studio like HBO Max pulling shows made for HBO Max being pulled off the service so as to not have to pay the people who made them ongoing residuals. Lets not even get started about Batgirl. Hopefully somebody leaks it.

I think the problem with Disney now is that they aren't flexible. They either heavily focus too much on notalgia such as Stars Wars and Marvel making it hard for new and old fans to catch up, leaving their other original projects left in the dust, and when do give certain shows a chance they put very harsh and strict rules limitations on the projects to fit their brand, which can lead to a difficult time creating an original IP to fit the mold or canceling projects despite being very popular other than to either save money on making new episodes or the product doesn't fit their brand (eg: The Owl House).

Disney does have some really good ideas under their belt. Unfortunately, the higher ups, namely Chapek and, previously, Iger, just aren’t prioritising new, original, or evolved content. It's not like it's Star Wars or Lord of the Rings where it's this huge blank canvas of a world. It's a guy and a dog. Maybe you could get people to watch it if Tom Hanks was involved, but if he's not, what's the appeal? No one was eagerly awaiting the next instalment in the Turner & Hooch Cinematic Universe.

This is why I’ve never been exactly up in arms over Disney owning pretty much all of the recognizable IP. False. I probmise you if you can find MOther Gothel and Eugene in the original Rapunzel story, you have discovered a book published in 2010 or later. Abu and Rajah are not in anything before Aladdin, nor is Jasmine, or Robin Williams' version of the genie. Ariel's personality, design, voice, and basically the entire plot of the movie were put together by Disney. None of the characters from Frozen are in The Snow Queen. Well, except Gerda and Kay, but in Frozen they are servants, not the focal characters. And even where characters are lifted, the original versions aren't like the Disney portrayals. I'm pretty sure Jiminiy Cricket was just called "Talking Cricket" in the book and also Pinnochio is actually trying to kill him at one point. I HAVE read Bambi: A Life in the Woods, though, and let me tell you, that book isn't fousing on Babmbi's mother's death, it's focusing on death in GENERAL.

The movie Turner and Hooch is surprisingly dark for a movie where Tom Hanks gets his quiet life turned upside down by a dog. The show immediately ruined any goodwill the name might have had by the fact they killed Scott Turner (Hanks) as kind of the inciting incident. Even if he was never going to show up in the series you don't just kill Tom Hanks without a very good reason and this series was not it.

Long shot, but could you perhaps do a video on how Disney+ is changing their old media? Not just editing things to make them more "appropriate", like changing Lilo getting into a piece of furniture with a pizza box lid covering the opening instead of a dryer like the original movie, but how they're changing the intros to their old cartoons as well. Find an upload of the Ducktales and Chip And Dale intros on youtube from years ago, and compare them to the official Disney+ versions. They're flattened out, lack impact, and the singing is at a much higher level than the music. It's just weird to me why they decided to do that, and as these new things will become the standard, the older stuff will become lost.

I really thought Dopesick was going to be Disney+'s homegrown prestige drama, their House of Cards, it had starpower with Micheal Keaton and it was really well written with great characterwork (or at least I personally haven't been as invested in entirely new characters and setting in a long time) and it had this nice Game of Thrones style setup where you follow people on all sides of the major conflict. But the buzz for it died down so quick, they really could've pushed it more, but instead the hype around a new episode seemed to die about two episodes in. I feel like they really need to diversivy their assets more, eventually the Marvel thing will die down (seems it's already started with this phase of the MCU) and people already seem to be tired of Star Wars.

What I personally think is also a problem with Disney+ in the US is the separation from Hulu. In most other markets, except I think South America, both services are one service since one year after initally launch. Hulu content just runs under the Star brand which is marketed as more adult content. The price was raised from 6,99€ to 8,99€ (at least where I live) for that but honestly it was absolutely worth it because otherwise I would have cancelled Disney+ after the first year subscription ended. Now that Disney+ is buying back/sharing a lot of streaming rights from other services where I live, the service is really useful to me. Also unlike Netflix and amazon, it lacks in regional content so far. Yes, they have to host European productions here due to an EU law but it is stuff they bought. They don't invest in local productions as the others do. Or at least not in Germany. Not everything works everywhere, sometimes something regional like Squid Game or Dark work international but are not filmed in English and sometimes something just works in the market it was produced for, Amazon e.g. bought up the series Pastewka and Deutschland '83 and did quite well with them on the German market. They also localized Hitoshi Matsumoto Presents Documental for various markets under the name LOL: Last One Laughing (see Germany, Spain, France etc.) that just don't work for the majority of the audience if it isn't their native language or a language they understand on native level but also can't be really be dubbed or subbed without losing most of the jokes.
