Great work Sasha! Can you do videos that cover the different versions of the Amazons? The peace loving and kinky pacifists from the Golden age? Badass warriors, scholars, artists, etc with personalities and characteristics from the Post Crisis era? To the rapist and child killers in the New 52? There's so many different versions of them and the New 52 completely ruined their reputation. Incels still use that era as an excuse to hate on the Amazons. Love your videos?

This was the period in comics where the main character got swapped out for more violent replacements. Batman was replaced by Azrael who had an even more extreme attitude than Bruce Wayne and wore a costume that made him look like a transforming mecha. But the Knightfall saga sold really well. Since it worked with Batman, they tried it again with Wonder Woman. Because it's not comics if they don't beat a good idea into the ground.

My friend was killed almost 2 years ago. i have been serverly depressed and fanfiction and comic channels have really helped me overcome my grief. Current comics are so dark i had to avoid them and go silverage for a few years. Your constant upbeat view on comics and being willing to accept change from any writer if its done with care, has really been a constant bright spot in my life. Your vocal support of fanfic is what inspired me to share the double self insert fanfic i was writing to deal with my loss. It on Spacebattles and its threadtag will obviously point it out if anyone cares. Reading the run as it happened, it was shortly after Superman died and was replaced by four different supermen and Azreal replaced Bruce Wayne as Batman. The only Artemis I was familiar was in Young Justice but in Red Hood and the Outlaws introduced me to this new hotter Artemis. Honestly, if she stayed as a alternate WW then maybe would have faded into obscurity but being in the Outlaws with Bizarro made her into her own character!!
@michaelcummins7397
@michaelcummins7397 4 жыл бұрын
Artemis’ introduction was the most true to Wonder Woman mythos as you could get. It had all the shock sexuality (Charles Marston would approve), fused with Greek Tragedy (Hippolyta sacrificing another for her daughter) and it’s injected the series with some electricity desperately needed after years of cookie cutter good-girl Diana.

I loved this run back in the day and I legit cried when Artemis died. But yeah LOT'S of cake for everyone lol that artist did that a lot. But the new equipment, Diana's rogue gallery face-off and the Demon fight at the end were 10/10. If not for those gauntlet she would of never have been able to defeat that Doomsday clone in the future. Lots of cheese (a LOT of it not necessarily) bad blood between mom and daughter and a few other stuff were not good in this run. It was a fun little time and I was sooooooo happy to see her return!

I also remember being very confused because I was a young baby gay with an affinity for redheads lol So it was like, I hate you for being mean and taking Diana's place, but you're also kind really hot. lol Ok, so you should totally cover Hippolyta's run as Wonder Woman, and their arch in Our Worlds at War. I'm a fan from this time. When this storyline was going on, in was generally known that John Byrne was taking over after #100, so anything that happened those 10 issues wouldn't last. Not expecting much, this run was much better than I expected! I love Mike Deodato's art, and I liked the biker shorts! I also liked how Diana was more down to earth for awhile; it was a time when the creators could be experimental, and they were! I'm a John Byrne fan, but when he took over, it felt like everything was returning to the status quo. As for all the cheesecake art, that was the 90's!! Not only were comic book publishers putting out swimsuit issues of their female characters, on the newsstand there were all the men's magazines like FHM, Maxim, etc., all ln competition for the same (male) audience. Getting back to Deodato, I'd love to see what you think of his Catwoman run!! It's disappointing how popular she was in her own book, created her own identity apart from Batman, but that seems to be long forgotten.

This! Man, I had hair down to my backside for a couple years, and it got caught on everything, sat on, my fiance would roll over onto it in his sleep and pin me down...I can't even begin to understand how anyone could think it made sense to design a character with hair so long that it's often pooling on the ground. Especially if you're creating a character who's supposed to be a hard-ass warrior woman from a grim desert tribe of Amazons...I'd figure a character like that would have as short and practical a hairstyle as possible.

I enjoy cheesecake, I think it's a good indication of an artist's style and talent and it's just also pleasing to the eye, though I like it to feel a little more naturalistic. In a weird way Artemis' outfit being so strategically ripped is somehow _more_ revealing than actual nudity, as you could argue the latter falls within the confines of 'heroic nudity', as you see in a lot of statues and paintings (as well as characters like Dr Manhattan). I must say I really do like this art, though. Artemis' crazy ponytail is very larger than life and dynamic.

I found myself laughing out loud several times, and I thought, "when it's safe to date again and I have the time, I need to find me a woman with this kinda funny."

Jane Foster as Thor was handled very differently than Artemis as Wonder Woman, save for the parental characterization. Odin was depicted as a complete and utter asshole, much like Hippolyta. Although, TBF, it was hardly Odin's first go-around as a completely unreasonable, horrible, abusive parent. Aside from that, there were many key differences. Thor had become unworthy through his own self-doubt, as opposed to anything Jane did. Jane was a long established character with a relatively rich (although often one-note) history, and she wasn't written as as a complete jerk, as opposed to Artemis.

I love all of Diana's alternate costumes. In my ideal DC world, she could just open her closet and put on which ever iteration of her uniform that suits her mood on a given day. I really do love her original look best, though. I hope she returns to the classic outfit eventually. I love the Gal-centric take on her costume that our princess sports now, but do miss the iconic star studded trunks and the red and white striped pointed mid-calf boots. Silver age is my all time fav, when she featured an actual golden eagle on her bustier instead of the "kinda-birdish" double W she's had for the last few decades. Any time an artist does a costume design that makes it look more full and bird-like, my little heart goes pitter patter. Btw, Sash, I love your vids. You are fab and fun. We like a lot of the same characters, wish I were your friend, the convos would be so great. Thanks for keeping me so entertained.

I love Artemis as a character, and I love the idea of her being Wonder Woman. But, the execution of the storyline wasn't that great, and it's so sad to see. I love how she brings a different leans to the Wonder Woman mythos and how she helps expand the themes that the title often brings with. I find that there's so much commentary you can do with her on her relationship with Diana, Themyscira, the Wonder Woman mantle, and even others. She's a character that's so complex in my opinion that it's so sad to see nobody taking advantage of it as there's so much of her personality and motives to be explored. I suppose I can see why people don't like her, but honestly, I point more to the less than great writing rather than her as a character. I wish writers developed her better and spent a little more effort in expanding her as they do with other characters. She has the potential. It's just that nobody has considered it :/ hopefully, she'll get the attention she deserves soon. I'd buy those books in a heartbeat.

Hi Sasha. I love when you talk about Wonder Woman and any of the characters associated with her. First, I didn't mind Artemis. It was good that the writers remind the readers that Wonder Woman is a role in the Amazon's government and not a title given to Diana like "Superman" was given to Clark/Kal-El. I didn't like the art with that particular story arch but I realize that you have to accept some over blown depictions because of the financial needs at DC; gots to make those little "hungry" boys want to buy the mag. Personally my favorite WW artists were George Perez and the Terry and Rachael Dobson. The last point that I would like to respond to is the absence of a consistent writing/art team. I think the stories from the past that were always the most successful were the ones where Diana was an agent of Athena and the Greek Gods would invade her world and interrupt her life. Sadly, I would borrow a lot of story structure from Xena, Warrior Princess with the members of the Greek Pantheon consistently like Greg Rucka's "The Hiketeia". Still like that one 17 years later.

The Liefeld-esque art was getting very heavy there for a bit. Then you showed the cover for the beginning of the Byrne run and I wanted to run screaming back to the cake! Yeah, they could have toned it down a bit, but it was comics in the '90s, so there you are. And yeah, I'm there for Diana in bike shorts! Daaaaaaaaaaamn....😍

This was really interesting. I never got familiar with Artemis, but the context makes perfect sense since early ‘90s DC was all about shaking things up, killing Superman, replacing Batman, and apparently Wonder Woman isn’t immune to shock writing trends of the time. After this video, seems like Artemis at this time was the Faith to Diana’s Buffy. Pretty interesting. As for over/underrated comic book costume designs, I prefer Wolverine’s mid-2000s yellow and blue costume over either of his classic looks. Brown costume, Tiger Stripe costume...both great, but the redesign just hits right for me. Great video!

At least Artemis got more of a chance with Wonder Woman, than Orana did in the Silver Age. I read this arc at the time and remember really liking it. Everything, but Hippolyta. The way she was written during this period made me really dislike her. But, I have to say, watching this video, took me right back to that time. Forgotten, but still much with me. Great video, as always

I know this whim is about Artemis, but I couldn’t help reminisce about this version of Diana used in the Amalgam Comics “Bullets and Bracelets,” teaming her with a mix of Punisher/Frank Castle and Steve Trevor. It made sense as Storm was using the Wonder Woman moniker in much the same way as Artemis was. Any time you visit the 90s, you simultaneously make me feel old and young again! Lol Thank you for the content!

Thor in the crop-top is definitely one of my "WTF?!" ones. Especially the times when it got so small he was basically just shirtless, and he had Mjolnir on a big-ass chain instead of the leather strap because...reasons? Plus, the weird headpiece thing instead of the winged helmet, that just looked like so many 90s characters (Gambit, Havok, so many Image characters, etc.) that I legit for a moment mistook him for a long-haired version of Havok that was for some reason not in an X-family comic, especially since that was one of those weird places when they also often took away his archaic dialect. Also, Hawkeye in the skirt...is not half so weird as Hawkeye in the lavender shirt with the neckline that plunged to his belt, and the shorts. Never actually read comics during that point in Avengers history, but man...that one was a little bit too disco-era, even compared to things like disco-collar Nightwing.

Biker Shorts WW looked awesome. I'm with you on that. I'm also a big fan of Artemis but not sure how much of that is Mike Deodator Jr. Okay, good portion of it is. But I also liked her fiery persona as a foil for Diana. Happy that Artemis has come into her own and didn't disappear into the comic book dust racks.

I liked Diana's black outfit because I realized it was going to be temporary and that she would be back in the red, white, and blue eventually. Ditto for Artemis as Wonder Woman. What irked me was John Byrne portraying WW's bob hairdo as being a wig. I suspect it was because he wanted "his" Wonder Woman to have waist-length hair -- which is also probably why he changed her costume (from a pattern of stars on her shorts to two big stars on either side, her belt connected to the WW insignia, and that huge can-opener tiara he drew on her.). A look that I personally HATED at the time. I love John Byrne's art style, usually, but the first several issues of his run on WW were a lot to take.

I read the whole wonder woman-artemis story arch back in the late 90's when I was a young man. My reaction to the high amount of skin and super perfect bodies was that I enjoyed the art but it was going a bit to far for the whole superhero gig. Diana is a SUPERHEROINE for Hera's sake. She deserves the dignity of having her ass covered. I really liked Wonder Woman and collected her regularly. Was Really glad when she got her title back. But lets be real here, sex sells, and even the most macho of men have a secret fantasy of being captured by a band of super physically perfect amazon women and brought back to their island as a sex slave. So in the end you let it slide.

Reading the arc when it first came out, I liked the fact, that Artemis was Diana's moral opposite, but you had the feeling that her time as WW was not going to last. I liked the hook of Hippolyta's treachery, an element that would come into play later during the John Byrne run. Artemis as Cassie's mentor and trainer along side Diana and Donna was a great way to use the character, and keep her somewhat in the spotlight. However, I am enjoying the newest iteration of Artemis in Red Hood and the Outlaws.

I enjoy the biker outfit, but I also end up loving any costume from before I started reading comics that everyone hates, they just tend to cross the line into endearing for me. That said, I am one of those stop giving Wonder Woman pants people, mostly just because it feels more aesthetically bland than her regular costume which tends to be my issue with redesigns of female characters that are mostly just there to give them more clothes tend to just be less interesting, and at least the biker outfit is fun in it's own way, and was never going to be permanent anyway.

I love New 52 Wonder Woman's outfit, and I am a fan of Superman Red/Blue fromt he 90s. Honestly, most "hated " outfits in comics, I tend to like. Especially if they are temporary looks that were never intended to be forever, even though fans freaked out. Also fun Artemis sidenote: I was lucky enought to get an action figure of Artemis as Wonder Woman back when Mattel was making the DC Universe figures.

I've always liked this arc, and I've always like Artemis. She wasn't prepared for "Man's World" and although her heart was in the right place she really didn't understand the nuances of what was going on around her. And her arrogance really was one of her most appealing features. It's also really striking to look back at this and see just how much Mike Deodato's art has matured since then.

I dig Diana with the leather jacket. I don't especially like the current look, only because jeans that tight can make for mobility issues, which is ironic since the one of the reasons for changing it was previous costumes being unrealistic. Could be some magical godly denim that allows for free range of movement though, so I'm not super phased by it. Though the classicist in me loves any time Wonder Woman is in a costume variant that takes inspiration from Greek battle armor. It's so badass!

As far as regretible costumes go, nothing beats boob window Sue Storm. You really should cover the in comic history of why it exists, because it gets crazy. There is probably a deep dive story behind the scenes as well, likely mad about 90's comics themes in general and splicing them into classic characters.

You should do a video on the two issue arc on the Pre-Crisis Orana Wonder Woman around issues 250-251 where ... a new aggressive red-headed Amazon takes on the mantle of Wonder Woman from Diana and Diana still returns to Man's World.
