Devon R I often wear boots, even when sneakers are allowed. There shouldn’t be a problem wearing it where sneakers are allowed, so long as the outfit matches. I would probably pair them with a pair of chinos rather than jeans, and maybe a Henley/t-shirt/polo underneath a fabric bomber jacket. Since sneakers usually mean casual, though, you could probably get away with anything that looks good.

Ralph Lauren's dinner jacket, jeans, and cowboy boots combo is officially known as a "Texas Tuxedo" or "Texas Formal" and is considered formal dress in Texas when the invitation calls for it. I have worn it quite a few times. Very common at charity balls and weddings. It is thought of as a slight step below black tie. Wearing darker jeans and darker boots can increase the formality, as can prominent creases in the jeans. Lighter boots and lighter jeans, wear on the jeans, and swapping the bow tie for a bolo tie can tone the formality down. However, Garth Brooks taught us in "Friends in Low Places" to never "show up in boots... and ruin a black tie affair," when the invitation does not explicitly state to do so.

I have a small conundrum, and I'm hoping someone can help me: I am 15 and ever since I was 13, I've loved the 1920's-1940's in every aspect, with the clothing being no exception. I have one dress shirt, a tie, two bowties, one pair of slacks, a fedora, some suspenders, dress belt, and a vest. I love this outfit and would love to wear it everyday, but the black is a pain in the rear during summer days, and I sweat like a dog, even when I wear an undershirt. Another thing is I'd love to buy more things, like dress shoes, different colored clothing, more hats, and different styles and patterns. My issue is: Do I wait until I'm 17-18 and won't grow as much to buy some maybe higher quality clothing for me, or would it be fine to buy some cheaper like clothing for me since I'm currently 15. Its a little weird yeah, and its not too common for someone my age to be interested in this, but I'm just curious if anyone can aid me here. Thanks :)

My recommendation would be to wait a couple years, first because then you won’t grown out of it, but also because style and mentality changes a lot until you’re 20 or so. I don’t know where you live, but if it’s hot in summer then try wearing less layers and lighter colors and materials, like linen or seersucker. Where I live here in summer it gets to about 36-40°C tops, and what I usually wear in those cases is loafers, light open weave material chinos, and a tucked button down shirt. With that simple outfit I dress better than 80% of the people.

I love that jacket and wore it to fancy work events when I preferred to wear trousers or a black skirt instead of a gown. I could wear it with heels or flats. I could put a cream, white or black shell underneath it and I was warm enough without getting too warm. I could accessorize it with pearls or a pendant necklace. I don't fit into that outfit anymore but I can't bring myself to get rid of it. I don't have any daughters and my nieces are either too short and slender or too heavy. I'll pass it on to the right person at the right time. Maybe my sister?

I have never understood all the fuss over fabric that lays so flat and stiff, or garments that have these specific folds and pleats that have to stay crisp in order to look good. Sure it looks great on the hanger. But how do you get through the day and all the different types of movement required to perform normal functions ( bending over to tie your shoe, sitting to eat lunch, using the bathroom, getting in and out of the car, changing positions to avoid cramping, etc) and still manage to avoid messing up your ironing job? For those people to whom crisp, flat clothing is particularly important, do you just go through the day paying constant attention to not mussing up your shirt? Do you have to basically prance about worrying about wrinkles?

I'm specifically concerned about "matching" shoe formality with that clothing. Is it acceptable to wear monkstraps or loafers with a double-breasted or a three-piece suit? Would these shoes be appropriate courtroom attire? Are Oxfords TOO formal for certain suits, like flannel or linen or seersucker or even sharkskin? How much do brogues step it down? Derbies? etc.

...... Historically speaking the rougher the material looked the more common it was, therefore the more casual it was for wear, and the more smooth a material was, the more Pricey the material was, and therefore more formal. The other factor for Casual and formal was color cause the more pricey the dye used the more Formal the wear(red, blues, purples, whites and blacks(special color)) was the cheaper the dye used the more casual (greens, yellows, browns, and oranges). Black as a color was originally Reserved for Funeral/Mourning wear and was permitted as a Formal Attire for that purpose.

Why is black tie with a shiny satin bowtie less formal than white tie which has a matte cotton bowtie? Apart from the texture, also the material seems to be less "festive" in white tie than it is with black. There must be some historical reason, but I am interested to know whether it is an exception to the formality rule or whether I am assuming a false logic here. ;)
