I just want to say how much i appreciate this. I didn’t grow up with any father figures and I’m honestly just trying to change a generational curse that’s been in my family for ever so I’m starting to change everything and I’ve been so stuck on what to wear, how to tie a tie, which hand to wear my watch on. It’s tough. I really appreciate this though.

These videos are just incredible. My older brother (for some reason), always understood fashion. He never had to struggle to meet women. Such a natural. I'm learning this stuff for the first time. The explanations are so clear and memorable. They just remind me of how my brother dressed and how he always tried to drive it into my thick skull to learn these things. Even his tennis shoes were on point, and had a watch and cologne collection going at 20 years old. I'm just having a blast learning here Antonio.....and it's paying off!! Thank you!!

Opera Pumps/Court shoes are still the most formal footwear you can wear today, only worn with white tie and formal interpretations of black tie. Balmoral boots also deserves a spot since they are worn with full Morning Dress. Although it's nice to see someone like Antonio give new people a good introduction to formal footwear.

Imho, the point of having a dress boot (balmoral/derby) is so you can still look dressy on snowy or rainy days. When you wear a well made balmoral boots, you will still looks like wearing a normal oxford shoes. Look at most balmoral boots, most of the top part of the upper made of suede so it looks like a sock. So dress boots are actually on the same level of formality with their low cut sister shoes.

My late grandfather always have said, that gentlemen (real men at that) always live by the rules. And I get it! When dressing, he always used to check us to see whether we're in tact & proper bearing. And when he say, "Wear your clothes kiddo!," he means that you wear the right clothes that will match the occasion.

It depends where you live and the culture of that place. For example in UK people wear brogues on weddings with formal suits. So it's not taking style casually I think it's about the region and history of that region along with their culture and definition of scale of formality in that region and culture.
@mydogskips2
@mydogskips2 6 жыл бұрын
Not to show my ignorance too much here, but I actually thought full-brogue wingtips were the most formal shoe, not casual. I thought plain oxfords were exactly that, plain, rather dull and boring looking, not ornate enough, and as such they would be considered more casual. I do now appreciate why that's not really the case, but I still think to some degree wingtips can be, and widely are, considered a formal shoe. Maybe not in high-society, probably not, but they're not the group I hobnob with. In fact, where I live, just wearing shoes at all could be considered formal. ; ) And I'm not sure, but I bet if I asked my 11-year-old nephew which shoe looks more fancy, my black wingtips or plain oxfords, he'd probably say the wingtips, and he'd answer the same if I asked which was more formal, which I should wear to a social gathering.
@jko8888
@jko8888 6 жыл бұрын
There are certainly a lot of variations among cultures and regions. I think what impresses me more in terms of formality, is the care given to the shoes. I often notice guys wearing a very nice business suit and tie, but their shoes are scuffed and worn. A good polish along with a mirror shined heel and toe can make all the difference in terms of formality. The mirror shine especially can give a plain oxford an amazingly formal look. So don't think too much about what shoe you're wearing to a formal event, but definitely give it some care before you wear them there!

Interesting to learn more about shoes. Growing up in a blue-collar household, every shoe made of leather other than mocassins, boots and trainers was just called "classic shoe" and considered formal. While I believe that in today's supercasual world dominated by trainers and running shoes also brogues and Chelsea boots would make the cut as somewhat formal, it was still nice to get more insights on the topic.

I agree with the statements. I have a pair of Allen Edmunds Fifth Street dress boots, in black. These feature a cap toe with broguing on the toe only. I will wear them with a black suit to shows and to what is effectively a goth/new wave/ industrial night at a local nightclub. I also wear them with odd trousers and blazer. I also wear full brogue dress boots in a dark chili cordovan for the more casual look with odd trousers.

I believe it might also have to do with the fact that in general we are moving towards an extremely casual environment, where trainers are commonly seen in the offices, that even shoes classified here as casual are still much more formal than what most of people today are wearing.

Good morning sir! I love the video. It has really helped me to identify which shoes I want for certain occasion's. However, as you're asking for a different opinion I'd like to add mine. I wanna put the dress boots and the number 6 spot instead of the Chelsea's. I think that the dress boot as a way of commanding attention when wearing it a suit but nuts to a very formal setting. For example in a simple business setting. A good way to show off without looking obnoxious.

Currently I only have a small collection, but I have the basics covered in a range of formalities. First off I have a pair of black calf captoe oxfords, from Barker's. They're the most formal option I have and work well when I'm wearing black or white tie, as well as for funerals. Did a decent job of putting a mirror polish on the toes. Second option, and my most expensive and recent, is a pair of mid-brown calf half-brogue oxfords, from Crockett & Jones, slightly less formal and can be dressed up or down. Third option is a pair of reddish tan suede derbys from Clarks, a lot less formal, but also due to being suede, partial rubber sole, and a nice innersole, they're the most comfortable of my formal shoes. My brother has a smaller selection and his most formal shoe is pair of black derbys, not quite as formal but when I shined them up they still do the job just fine, he has a great pair of handmade English clogs though which are really interesting, definitely not formal at all despite being black leather, there's still a couple of industries in the UK like metalworking where they're still useful footwear to protect you from hot metal swarf on the floor that would melt the rubber on normal shoes. Queen Victoria apparently really liked Chelsea boots, before they were called Chelsea boots, they were practical and comfortable for her while still being formal enough for Victorian era fashion tastes. I think royal approval definitely gives them a boost in formality, and they really can range from fairly formal polished leather to more funky casual designs in rough leather or suede and bold colours.

Great video, thank you! But I cannot fully agree with the Monkstrap, because I for my feeling it can be more formal than a wingtip brogue or a derby (imagine wearing black double monks with a black suit …). I understand your point, it's also possible to wear it with jeans - that's what makes it so great.
@EOTA564
@EOTA564 6 жыл бұрын
These days the colour is by far the most important factor. A full derby long wing brogue in black can still be worn as a formal shoe in most business situations whereas a tan shoe will always be casual even if it’s a plain Oxford toecap. The style rules are most important for dark brown and oxblood/burgundy shoes. The difference between a dark brown Oxford and a dark brown Derby is significant.
@sammy_sam_leonardo
@sammy_sam_leonardo Жыл бұрын
The only thing I would say is rules around formality can be regional and time/event specific… for example, in England you would absolutely see someone wearing formal style lace up boots, usually with broguing, paired with a suit - but only a tweed or heavily textured suit and only during the daytime or at more casual events/activities e.g at the horse racing, but only at specific race courses.

I didn't go to Acemarks until after the vid, because I didn't want to get my hopes up. Many places I have seen posted on the internet only have shoes that go up to a 12 or 13. Depending on the cut of the shoe, I wear anything from a 13-15. It was refreshing to see that they at least have 14 and 14s. I liked your video, and generally agree with everything you said... though due to trying to keep most of the focus off of my feet, I believe I will still forego the grey shoes.

I find that the formality of wholecuts, plain-toe oxfords and cap-toe oxfords was somewhat hotly debated in some style forums. I originally thought the wholecut was more formal than the plain-toe/cap-toe oxford; however, I would choose the cap-toe oxford over the other two. I personally would stick to oxfords (some with brogues), monkstraps, chukka boots and chelsea boots.

Cowboy boots can be casual or formal. It's a do all shoe type. One pair for casual and a fancy pair of exotic leather or jet black leather with some small silver accents at the tips and heels.

I'm from Texas and was wondering where do Western style exotic skinned boots (ie alligator, ostrich, etc) fit in your category? I've seen them worn in suits and black tie occasions.

Thanks for these great shoe style tips. But I wanted to point out something that I learned relatively recently, and that's that your shoe size can actually change as you grow older, often increasing a half-size or more. I had wrongly assumed with a recent order of shoes that there was a manufacturing problem and that the shoes were cut too tight. But what really happened was that I needed to move up a full size because my size had changed, though the width remained the same. Obviously, no matter how fabulous the quality and style of your shoes for the occasion, if they aren't comfortable, they're not going to work out for you. So, as you grow older, I'd recommend actually measuring your shoe size from time to time.

Thanks for the video! I always thought that Whole cuts were the most formal, and the only reason Balmorals and Regular oxfords are more formal was only because of ease of availability and affordability.. Definitely learnt something new ! :) My personal favorite shoes are oxblood double monks and whole cuts. For all formal events i wear black oxfords, but tassel and penny loafers along with a great pair of driving shoes are my jam :D (I'm not much into boots though)

I ended up buying the black Medallion oxfords from Ace Marks and I love them! I'm amazed at how surprisingly comfortable they are! I also ended up wearing them when I went to Cincinnati to audition for America's Got Talent.

Short fella that has trouble finding dress shoes and since I really want to start dressing more stylish now that i'm going to enter my thirties, i want to know if the company makes shoes in my size. Please help, Antonio. Even an 8 1/2 is still loose and you hear the flop. I like tight and comfort.

Amazing and very informative video, but in my opinion there's no way chelsea boots are more formale than monk straps. Simplifying a lot, with the same color and fabric and without considering brogues and different types of the same kind (for example, wholecut oxfords, plain toe and tip toe oxfords, or penny loafers and bit loafers), i would say: Oxford > Derby > Monk Strap > Loafer = Chelsea Boot = Chukka Boot > Sneaker > Slipper.

Great video! I find myself agreeing with this video and the shoes. The only thing for me is that I am not a fan of monk straps for me. They look great and I’m not hating on them but I just don’t feel that they are my style.

You touched on loafers, but you didn't touch on the Tuxedo Loafer/Opera Pump, sometimes referred to as the Italian Dress Loafer which is similar to the Belgium loafer, but are usually a single piece of polished leather with a smooth rounded toe, and may or may not have tassels. They've become extremely popular these days in red carpet attire due to their simple but eye-catching design, but can also be a dressed up casual depending upon the stain of the leather.

I thoroughly agree with your placement of wholecut oxfords below plain and captoe oxfords. A number of people have stated that wholecuts should be more formal, but I agree with you that their non-classic nature in terms of what we see pushes them down the formality scale a bit. I would be very tempted to try and get a bespoke pair of shoes made as wholecuts, but with additional lines sewn in to hide their wholecut nature.

Then why not just go with a bespoke cap toe or plain toe? I personally feel a pair of mirror shined whole cuts goes better with black tie. Just my opinion for what it's worth.
@zoukatron
@zoukatron 7 жыл бұрын
Bespoke "hidden wholecuts" would basically be a luxury to treat oneself. I think the issue with the visuals of the wholecut, is that you have a line in the leather (where it's laced up) that just terminates in the middle of the vamp, whereas on any other shoes, all lines in the leather either go all the way to the edge of the shoe, or they terminate in another line which does go all the way. Wholecuts lack this, which is why, certainly to me, they look weird.

Antonio, a very good, informative video as always. But the level of formality depends also on the width of the sole, the size of the toebox and the form of the dress shoe, as the more round to be more casual and the more elongated (as all of the shoes of AceMarks you showed us) to be more dressy.

About job interviews: you'll be more successfully if you will adapt yourself to the type of company you are going to have the interview with. If you're going to work for a PAtek Philippe boutique in the centre of Milan, then it's ok to have black oxford and a formal suit. If you're going for a position at Facebook, that's another story. I know something myself having worked (as manager) for 2 years in Amazon: a decent shirt, a blazer, jeans, brown brogue derbies, no tie, a good Omega watch, and it was done. People coming to the interviews with the suit and the tie were just looking COMPLETELY out of place there where even the fulfillment center general managers were going around in Ac/Dc t-shirt and shorts in summer time. So, study the company and its environment and dress the way it fits for the company, that's the 1st good recipe.
