I watched this years ago and I remember it as one of the best movies I've ever seen (yes, I am a man who loves Alien and Mad Max). Still in my top ten, if not too five. Gotta watch it again some time, refresh my memory.

I 💯 agree! I ended up accidentally watching it as the tickets to some Tom Cruise Action film's tickets were all sold out! I couldn't BELIEVE HOW BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING THIS FILM was! What blew me even more away was how little HOLLYWOOD acknowledged this MASTERPIECE giving a ton of awards to a film I thought was absolute GARBAGE, "AMERICAN PIE" which made me feel sick 🤢 to my stomach as I found it disgusting!

@@enochpowellwasright899 Arrogance isn’t the same as pride. Empires are built on the backs of the people they rob; Rome’s lasted 1400 years, Britain’s was 300 when WWII’s end ended it. Yet Britain’s language and culture continue to shape the world. Why not be proud of that, and leave empires to the past?

@@SaintVodou Empire's are built on the backs of the conquerors - British inventiveness, martial prowess and industry are what built our empire. Plus the British Empire's roots stretch back 600 years to the 15th Century, and before that England's imperial roots stretch back 900 years to the 12th century. The only reason our language, culture, institutions etc have shaped the world for the past 300+ years is due to the massive size and reach of our empire.

@@enochpowellwasright899 I’m proud of my native-born English grandmother. But am I “proud” of what Britain did in, say, India? No. Your “conquests” are back in the hands of their native people. Your own policy makers had the wisdom to see that a changing world had no room for empire-building, a nice name for plundering. It’s the simple principle of might making right, which in a nuclear age is a stupidity we can’t afford. And it’s morally repugnant-let’s not leave that out. By your logic, the US should just bomb the hell out of you, conquer England, and steal everything in it, because it CAN. Hitler tried; was that OK? Thousands of your countrymen died saying it wasn’t, so how do you justify doing it to someone else? I love my country-but not the lies and broken treaties that stole it from the people already here. There’s no glory or honor in that. No one has the right to what someone else cultivated for generations. The world is too small for that thinking. Its legacy is and always has been conflict, cruelty, misery and death.

A very uplifting book, but......don't watch this film version (earlier ones were more popular) motivated by resentment and ill feeling that breaks up the whole thrust of the story. Full of ludicrous inaccuracies and tries to show the British as arrogant fools who could never have achieved any success let alone actually carry out operations on the other side of the world. Revisionist nonsense that presents what was a victory as a disastrous defeat instead. Shame on you Mr Kapur. Poetic justice that this movie was a box office failure.
@TheLegendMaster4 жыл бұрын
I've read a lot about this period and General Gordon is my hero, this looks completely inaccurate. "Fanatics have attacked a British fortress in the Sudan". If that's how they describe the siege of Khartoum then they have absolutely no idea of the true circumstances. I don't mind films taking artistic license; I love the film Khartoum despite some inaccuracies (which are mostly true of Gordon but taken from other events). Also, "What does this desert have to do with Her Majesty the Queen?" - This film is apparently set during the Nile Expedition which was to relieve General Gordon and help him achieve his orders from the Khedive of Egypt (aka British Government) to evacuate EGYPTIAN garrisons and leave what peace behind they could with the bloodthirsty, barbarous Mahdi and his dervishes rampaging. The truth is that the Mahdi was largely a fraud and he usually sent slaves into battle because his actual men were too cowardly. Any film which presents his men as decent is promoting evil. I can absolutely believe what you say about this film and I have tried watching the 1939 version but even that is a bit weak. If you want to see a good film about this period watch 'Khartoum'.
@sarfcowst4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there were 2 expeditions; the subject of the book and the early films is the one that went up the Nile 13 years later, avenged Gordon and vanquished the Mahdi. The earlier one was intended to relieve Gordon but they were ambushed at Abu Klea where (with much difficulty) they destroyed the Mahdist force but then returned to the coast as they discovered that Khartoum had fallen. The other films partially mix up the two but this 2002 version is about the earlier expedition where Abu Klea is turned into a defeat.

Is the token black guy in the original movie? Or is this more PC mandated bullshit like Robin Hood adding the ridiculous "Moor" in the modern Kevin Kostner version. And every other movie now made for that matter. Of course even novels going back a hundred years tend to romanticize history, but movies today take this "diversity and inclusion" bullshit (Marxism) to ridiculous extremes.

Larry Singleton he is an excellent character. A previous slave who happens upon an Englishman in the desert. Allah has put him in his path therefore he will protect him. No social rights stuff, no token black character. His story works well in this movie and greatly adds to it. It gives the viewer a view from the other side without pandering to make the British look evil. I know this is late but figured I’d comment

The Muslim guide is in the book (and the previous movies) but that's all he is. Haversham has a contact in Egypt and outlines his fully-laid out plan for being a mute with a disguise to infiltrate Sudan. The contact recommends a trustworthy guide. This revisionist version turns the story on its head (implausibly) to make the guide the one with plans while Haversham is just winging it. Most of the rest of the plot is treated the same way.
