The only motown group that didn't break up!! The loyalty was a priority 💯

Levi Stubbs had incredible loyalty. He could have gone solo but didn't. He could have had lead billing but didn't. He was a Four Top through and through.
@kevincunningham7343 жыл бұрын
The loyalty these guys had for each other was unmatched. Levi always said even though he was the lead singer he was no better than any other guy in the group and each member was in the same level. And through the years that never changed. Hell they lived on the same block

They stayed together for so long! Something like 40 years. Hell, I've barely been able to stomach myself for 40 years. LoL! They must have been good friends and had great respect for each other. Say, does anyone know what I did with my back scratcher? Got a hell of an itch up under my shoulder blade! Ahhhh! Big shit!

The only Motown group that stayed together with all of its original members for 44 years. (1953-1997) Only death separated them. Second tenor and vocal arranger Lawrence Payton passed on June 20th,1997 at the age of 59 years old. Bass singer Renaldo “Obie” Benson passed on July 1st,2005 at the age 69 years old. Lead singer Levi Stubbs passed on October 17th,2008 at the age of 72 years old. They are all buried at Woodlawn Cemetery. First tenor Abdul “Duke” Fakir is the last surviving founding member, and he’s still touring today.

So much talent in the bands in the 50s to 70s. So many great bands came out of that era. I am lucky and privileged to have lived through it. The Four Tops began singing together the year I was born, 1953, at high schools! A fantastic band making fantastic music. It saddens me to think how shitty they would have been treated in those decades because of their skin color. Another group I love are the Ink Spots. They are late 50s/early 60s. The also made really great music.
@johnburrows11792 жыл бұрын
@@infledermaus absolutely so many talented groups back then. Ronettes, Temptation’s, list is almost endless. And they did it with talent and their own presence and showmanship. Myself I was born in ‘51, so I understand what you’re talking about. It wasn’t a perfect time back then, but it was a better time imho.

I understand that we don't know each other before now but one thing I believe is that it takes only a minute to accept friendship and that's why I have asked to accept my request of friendship. It would be an honor, l'm looking forward to a good friendship between us. May I ask where you are from?

I'm 68 and I remember when this song came out and how much I loved it. It maybe about a guy who has lost his lover, but it's really up beat and the arrangement is fantastic. I've listened as music has changed over the years. I love music. What I don't love is the thin crap produced today. Blech. The 1960s and 1970s were a fantastic period when brilliant music like this was written. Thing is, my parents had their era as well, harkening back to the music of the1940s and 1950s. I like the swing music they listened to as well and I kive classical music. I appreciate a well written tune with good harmonies, good arrangements, movement in more than just the lyrics line. I enjoy hearing all of the instruments and pin pointing each. I've loved the Motown sound since I was a kid. I have a bunch of it on my phone and I've always been caught up in the beautiful voices of black singers. These guys are really superb performers and this song is a wonderful example of their talent. I know that this song and many of their other hits were written by someone else, but these gentlemen voiced this hit like no one else could. Wonderful! They could teach the Justin Biebers of the world a shitload about making music!

You have to understand that those are local (jazz) musicians that probably were given the sheet music and the cues in the morning, had a small soundcheck and that's it. Only the guitarist and the bassplayer/musical director in this case were touring together with The Four Tops. Given that this is probably not at all their genre, and they were not prepared, they did deliver splendidly!

Dozier who wrote this said "I was sitting at the piano. I'd take these mind trips back to my childhood, and I'm trying to see what this piano part is telling me. Sure enough, there my grandfather is, pedaling in the garden. That memory comes to my mind's eye, and I know where the song is supposed to go. I hear him saying, 'Good morning, sugar pie. How you doin', honey bunch?' That's what started it."

62yrs old and still play there music,to me they are the best group ever. Levi has got the best tone in his voice and could sing anything,he was handsome when he was younger but turned into one hell of a silver fox. The most important thing to remember is that they were good friends as well,nobody in the group were better than another one,after all they stuck by each other good or bad. There will never be music this good again,not in my life time anyway. Absolutely love the Four tops.

+Biff Grimes, did you know that levi had the opportunity many times to leave the other tops and record on his own for a lot more money, but never would because his friendship with the other tops, his "brothers", was so tight...and also, he was the one that made sure their money was split up equally four ways, he got no more than the others despite his lead roll on the group. if that's not a "good guy", what is?
