It's a good angel name, since it means "pledged to God", and it's also Germanic, which suits Innistrad perfectly. Though it should probably be pronounced "lee-za" or "li-eza", depending on localization.

Innistrad is probably my favourite plane. Shadows over Innistrad was my first set opened when returning to the game. I definitely wanna try out an Orzhov Innistrad Theme with her, with Sorin and his vampires. There's a lot id like to do, just gotta hope I can do it.

Strangest thing about her first ability is that it isn't optional: You *have* to pay the commander tax as life rather than mana. Definitely going for the life gain approach, personally, while also taking advantage of her "Derevi-but-fair" quality with stuff like Skull Storm, Tome of Legends, Empyreal Storm, possibly Opal Palace and Commander's Insignia. And of course Font of Agonies is a must.

Empyrial Storm and Skull Storm benefit from Liesa's fixed mana cost. Since she could be played multiple times from the Command Zone to rack up the count. Skull Storm would be the best of the two.

3:50 She is also a 5/5 flyer with lifelink. So she can kill way faster while still gaining you life. I feel she has permanently moved Kambal to the 99 of what is now her deck. Once Kambal has died twice he starts to be very risky to waste a turn playing and hard to keep on the board, and you lose him as a viable win condition, while Liesa just can't be kept down. Also, as mentioned, Kambal is trash against creature-heavy decks, but Liesa works on everything and is frequently gonna swing in for an extra 5 damage. She also brings pay life synergy potential to the deck. Her inevitability makes her a nightmare compared to Kambal.

Honestly the commander I've been wanting since I got into the format a year and a half ago with Ayli. I do absolutely love me some aristocrats strategies, but the lifegain-control is what I've always wanted to focus on.

Oh I'm excited! I ran an RPG a few years ago in the Innistrad setting and used "my" Lesia as the big player in the game. Since there was almost no lore she was fresh but still strongly tied to the setting.

I am still extremely wary of this set as a whole as someone vaguely considering getting into Commander, especially given Partner in the past. That said, I am quite glad we both finally got the unknown sister and that Liesa seems open-ended enough to do quite a few different things with compared to a lot of other strong(er) commanders. It's also just nice to be able to tell what plane these new legendaries hail from unlike a lot of past Commander-birthed legendaries. In theory I guess the first Liesa deck would I do would be Enchantress, though that might get more expensive than I would personally like even with the recent reprint of Exquisite Blood. Shrug.

I'm actually quite excited for Liesa - more recently I've taken interest in Commanders that help speed up the game (recently built Obosh, been considering other Red decks) and Liesa fits that role to a T. Instead of using Lifegain as your win condition, it helps to leverage the self-inflicted life loss while punishing your opponents the more efficient their decks are. Removing her isn't a solution, either, because she always costs 5... And being a lifelinking flyer, she can get in there herself. At worst, she's a bit slow... But that's where Hatebears can come in. I'm not deciding what I'm building from Commander Legends for sure until the entire set is spoiled, but Liesa has my attention in the meantime.

@@johnbuscher Actually built the Purphoros deck a while back, when he did the original article. What I meant is that I like doing persistent damage - chipping away constantly, and then before people know it, you burst and they’re dead.
