In 1973, two children were playing near the town of Sandown on the Isle of Wight, England. What followed was as sinister as it was bizarre: a tall, humanoid figure dressed akin to a creepy clown, with three blue fingers and antennae on its head, appeared before the children. It appeared to be extraterrestrial, an encounter with an alien being which not merely communicated with the pair, but invited them inside its “metallic hut” UFO, and quite possibly abducted them. In the years since, all manner of theories have been proposed as to what the children experienced, with the being now, chillingly, being known as All Colours Sam, the Sandown Clown.

This bizarre tale just confirms to me what i have always thought-these 'beings' and their 'spacecraft' are not extra-terrestrial at all, but rather 'inter-dimensional'-the shape changing aerial objects, the impossible flight manouevers indicates they are energy rather than solid matter-the being in this case sort of gave it away with its remarks when the kids asked if he was a ghost.

I never thought they were ghosts, BEFORE I watched hollywood movies- I always thought they were just little people? I saw some that literally looked like little people who could vanish near water, and some that looked like REALLY little people but with wings (Hand to Face, yes I know, Fairies.... I saw it though and no one can ever tell me I didnt..like 20 of them)... Then after hollywood fuckd my head up- I saw them all as alien beings hiding under my bed lol. They stopped communicating around age 9 or 10 I believe.. One "pack" of them was even USING another child to entice other children to JOIN them. I was asked to join them- he said "we are vampires we can fly and stuff its cool" :""but you can never see your family again" i was like Nope. No hesitation lol. Kid vanished- n something was simultaneously happening to my sibling which drew everyones attention to HER - no one was even looking at me while I spoke with the child.... We, as kids, lived with a ghost, and we took it for granted. Sometimes he would appear as an Admiral of the wooden galleon age, sometimes you just had an invisible presence in front of you. Seen quite a few alien craft, fascinating the shapes they come in. One shot a beam of light to the ground, whilst I was travelling from Buxton to Stoke-on-Trent, over a field I was walking past, and the next thing two mechanical voices could be heard. I left as fast as my feet could carry me as I felt danger, the very first time I have ever felt that.

It's funny being from the Eastern side of the Isle of Wight, there is also another story involving a village that's no longer there and an individual called "Sam". It was also around the same area as Sandown.

It concerns a village called Wolverton that used to sit between Brading and Yaverland. As the story goes a merchant appeared in Wolverton and he used to give out things to the villagers. When asked for payment he replied, along the lines of nothing, but when the time comes I'll ask for a favour. The merchant was known only as Sam or Samuel. He disappeared for a while, he then returned saying another man was going to arrive and he needed to be got rid of. This man arrived and was seeking the well, listening to what "Sam" had told them, the villagers stoned the man,and some of his blood fell into the well. As he was dying he said he was a priest from the middle east who had heard of the well and had come to bless it. To shorten it of it was said if the well got contaminated it would cause the villages destruction. There then was a French invasion and as the village was burning, a man named Tom saw Sam watching. Sam then started running away, intrigued Tom decided to follow him. He followed him to a cave up on Culver cliffs. He entered the cave and found Sam who offered him food. He declined and Sam's appearance changed. He started looking demonic, Tom asked Sam are you the devil? Sam replied along the lines of "I am not the devil, you know me by another name Samael". After a bit of a showdown Sam disappeared and Tom became a hermit. The cave is called Hermits cave. The site of the town said to be where Centurions Copse is, just outside of Brading,just off the Sandown road. Whether this is based on actual events or just folk stories who knows.

I have read about this before and your treatment of it brings to mind Jacques Vallee's book - Passport to Magonia. Framing alien close encounters as a non-human intelligence - possibly inter-dimensional - communicating in playful way really resonates with me for some odd reason. I have never had an encounter myself, as far as I know, but this seems as likely an explanation as any other. I have a pet theory that when you have such an encounter, what you are seeing is so bizarre that you have no experience to compare it to, so your mind tries to make it congruent with your own experiences. You end up with a mish-mash of images from your subconsicous and real experiences. If you look into the cases as deeply as Vallee has, you find that the breadth of different experiences goes way beyond the classic grey aliens of pop culture. Oddly, rabbits are present in the stories people tell more than is statistically probable. Either the occupants are rabbit like, or the experience happens when the person is feeding their rabbits, or whatever. That I cannot explain.

Vallee is amazing. There's lots of entertaining writers, in the UFO scene, but Vallee is one of the very few, who are entertaining AND have scientific credibility (the only others I can think of, are Stanton Freidman, and maybe Jenny Randles)

From 3 to around 5 years old, I had a recurring nightmare that I realized as I got older played out like so many tales of both alien and fae encounters. I would be playing with toys on the floor near my mother only for this frightening being around my size to appear from the shadows of the unlit hallway that led to the door out of our apartment. My mother could never see it. I would try to scream but she couldn't hear me, and I couldn't move to escape. It then grabbed me by one or both of my legs and dragged me into the dark hallway. Usually the dream ended there, until the final time that I had it. In that one, the dream continued until I was suddenly in a different hallway. The being stopped dragging me and the only things I can remember are that it had taken me to its home, which was similar in to ours. It brought me to the window, which I must have climbed on something to see out of, and showed me the view. It looked kind of like my neighborhood, but different. I vaguely remember a yellow sky, and unlike my neighborhood, all of the buildings were a brown color. I hesitate to call this dream a nightmare because I remember the entity being friendly and that I was not afraid of it anymore. The only thing I remember it saying was something along the lines of "this is my home" when it brought me to the window. I don't remember how it sounded but it wasn't frightening or anything. At most I would say it probably sounded like something out of a children's cartoon or show. As for how it looked, the best thing I can compare it to is E.T. from the Spielberg movie. I was very much afraid of E.T. as a child, even for a few years after the dreams stopped, and while the home video release of the movie was probably around the time the dreams started, I never looked at E.T. and thought that it was the thing from the nightmares. The being from my dreams had no neck and didn't have the long arms or fingers that E.T. has. It was brown and had big expressive eyes like E.T., but it also had kind of a prominent nose and an unremarkable mouth. Can't remember if the mouth moved but I vaguely remember it "smiling" or something along those lines in the final dream. To be honest, I always more closely associated it with Captain Caveman, than E.T. I had no interest in aliens or anything like that back then, since I was a toddler for most of it. So I have no idea why I repeatedly dreamed that specific scenario. Interestingly enough, around the time the dreams stopped, I had a comic book (Ninja Turtles) that featured typical Grey aliens. I had no reaction to this for a while until very suddenly I became unbelievably terrified of their image. This culminated at 9 years old when a brief flash of an illustration of a Grey appeared on TV and I just about lost my mind screaming and crying, instantly. It took years before I stopped feeling chest pains when I would see them on TV or in books. No idea where that came from, but it spurned a curiosity that continues today and also indirectly led to lucid dreaming and a temporary ceasing of all nightmares for many years.

This case has always struck me as a perverse adult victimizing children. Then again, the Oz factor being off the scale, maybe this really was a legitimate close encounter. Chilling either way. As a wee bairn of 4 or 5, with my sister of 3 beside me playing on a picnic table in our back yard, which was located in an orchard bordered by woods at its lower slant edge, I heard a voice calling to us. We called back. The voice told us to come closer, into the woods, and it would show us something good. I was leery and asked, being whimsical, if the voice might be a dolphin. (I was big on dolphins back then, possibly due to FLIPPER, the TV show.) When the voice affirmed it was a dolphin, I felt my flesh crawl. I knew it was an adult, lying, so I took my sister's hand and led her into the house. This is one reason I rather doubt the ET aspects of the Sandown Clown. Then again, there were all the sidereal sightings and experiences, so ... who can say?

I had a dream about a clown, but it was black and white, no red. It was a vivid dream, I don't remember any colors on the clown, but he did have something in his hand. This strange encounter might be my favourite of all I've heard - as Laura mentioned it has overtones of both a humanoid/alien encounter and a fae encounter, and may indicate that both phenomena are actually the same thing. The being was friendly and it was just a shame the kids that met it were so young - although in fairness they did still manage to ask it some questions that got interesting answers...

No one has ever believed me, shoot I'm not sure if I believe my own experience any more. But once when I was very young, a really freaky butterfly landed on my finger. But it was humanoid shaped. A couple inches tall and sat up like a human in a chair on my finger. It had an unsettling insect/humanish mix of a face. It freaked me out so bad I shook it off my hand and ran inside. Never saw it again.

TopFurret I believe you! Lady contacted me from Devils Dyke UK, area UFO Hotspot, people reported strange cryptid activity. Lady and husband observed a 2ft gnome like cryptid after it ran over their legs while in bed,. 21 yr old daughter encountered a 5’’ tall tiny human fairy like figure with wings, it fluttered around her head during the day in the back garden. They lived on edge of Devils Dyke. Daughter especially traumatised to this day! Different Angel / Aliens walk among us hidden in plain sight!

Another strange case is the 1950's Bexleyheath UFO landings, whereby a saucer shaped craft landed in broad daylight light in a suburban London (Then Kent) street, in full view of many people, some even touched it. Witnesses include a doctor. That would make a great video Laura.

Hi Laura and Erik. I was abducted twice by aliens when I was a child living in Connecticut in the 1960"s. I do remember parts of the incidents. I do recall them being tall and grey. I did not see their faces. It was very creepy and frightening . I can't imagine what these children felt when the encountered the clown like entity.

I always thought the Sandown Clown was not an alien, but one of the hillfolk, a fae spirit. There are often a lot of parallels between alien encounters and celtic fairy stories and beliefs, but for me I cannot see All Colours Sam as anything other than a fae. He even comes out from under a bridge, seems to enjoy playing tricks, his outfit was always described as having sticks inside it, as if the sticks are holding the shape of his clothes, plus the wooden antennae, he is apparently a product of the woods. The way he was able to coax the children over just by casting his voice to them stands out as well, any child would run from a bizarre stranger in the woods but he was able to seemingly completely change their minds in an instant. He invited them into his "home" which is kind of spooky knowing gaelic folklore, so many tropes you hear in old fairy legends. He seems far more friendly and honest than the typical fairies of legend though.

This sounds similar to an encounter I had with Fire Hydrant Man. That year I saw a perfectly round large pale ball with a black cube within it that flew in front of me without making any sound at all. When the pale ball flew behind a building, I went to see what it was doing and it had disappeared. I have not thought of Fire Hydrant Man in decades. I have not thought of the large pale ball in even longer.

i didnt know about the whole 7 year old stuff its kinda freaky considering i was 7 years old in 1985 and had an encounter with a very large lizard man in my home at night that was accompanied by a strong sense of terror that made me want to flee i tried to wake my brother who i shared a bedroom with but could not then tried to wake my parents but they also didnt respond so i tried to get out of the house but i could not because as i perceived it time stopped as i tried to run down the stairs to the first floor of my home time seemed to slow i moved slower the faster i tried to move then i began to panic and decided to jump down the last 2 thirds of the stairs only to be frozen in mid air while at the bottom of the stairs a large broad shouldered humanoid figure with a head similar to alligator but with a shorter mouth that was built like a professional body builder ducked through the 6 foot 6 inch doorway at the bottom of the stairs as it stepped in to view it just glared at me like it was angry and thats it i dont know what happened after that the next thing i knew it was morning and i was standing next to my bed wide awake wondering how i got there and how it was morning for many years i thought it was just a dream but as i got older i realized that it was far to vivid to be a dream and the memory of it has stuck with me for almost 40 years now i know it seems crazy and could be easily written off as a dream but i have never in my life experienced anything like it

I had a few abduction experiences as a child, as did my mother (she didn't tell me about them until I was an adult). I resonate a lot with the idea that you get pulled into an alien reality that other humans can't see. The memories were so bizarre that I didn't fully realize they were real memories until I was an adult, and in that way maybe this bubble reality even buffers the child from really knowing what's going on. Grey aliens were a part of my abductions but it was the mantis looking aliens that really made it a trip and added an Alice in wonderland sort of feeling to the memories

Ahh Lady Laura you never fail to inspire with your choice of subject matter and your own quite distinct delivery. In fact so many of your stories go along with my personal beliefs, and I so often find myself shaking my head and just feeling validated! These children encountering such a being does not surprise me. As I have often thought that children, until a certain age, operate on what you could call a different frequency. That which normally changes with growth and aging. This frequency that I refer to seems to allow them to have completely open minds, and many are often far more curious than afraid, unless the being itself is able to suppress that fear, and leave the curiosity in check. Hence why so many children are born and within sometimes 2-3 years begin to recall former lives and so many details that they shouldn’t know. However it’s more often than not forgotten as they get older. I feel that the very same applies to these visitors, and they’re vision is more apt to see them, and their innocence allows them to engage with them. Have you noticed that when these events happen, you rarely if ever hear that the child in question was a bad child, who had poor attitude and was often in trouble for various things. They don’t seem to have the encounters. Or they aren’t spoken of, or perhaps simply not believed most likely due to their poor behavior. It makes me think so often as to whether there’s a way to change the frequency back to a child’s from an older age, and perhaps break these “laws” or simple rules, as they could definitely have more to worry about when dealing with an adult. This story is what you’d get if you took a bunch of folklore from all over the world and stuffed it in a blender, then pulled out a couple spoonfuls and went with the bits you got. It looks like a clown. It emerges from under a bridge like a troll. It has a hut that hops around like Baba Yaga. It claims to be a ghost but not really. It has all these fae-like elements. It’s been described as an alien. The whole thing is this super random assemblage of bits from other stories.

Thank you Laura, I've heard this story before, wish I could remember where. Anyway, I ask we consider what does time mean to some ET entities, whose lifespans may exceed our own by hundreds, if not thousands of years? And when compounded by such entities that have mastered faster than light travel does time as we understand it have the same meaning? Maybe it only seems to us that we are abducted every twenty or thirty years or so. While to the ET all of our abductions from our early childhood until our deaths could occur in just one ET day?! Speaking for myself, I find time travel a huge pill to swallow. FTL propulsion much easier to grasp and so believe in. I find some of the stranger encounters with alleged ET's, the really weird incidents like this one, easier for me to accept than the run of the mill stories where ET stops here on Earth, to examine us and breed with us directly.
