The French people were ruthless and brutal. Marie Antoinette wasn't politically savvy. It wasn't her fault that the citizens were suffering in abject poverty. Yes, she lived an extravagant lifestyle, but that was par for the course in French Court. She would have helped the citizens and done more sooner had she been aware of the circumstances.

Also, before Americans start puffing up too much about how shockingly brutal the French were and how "our Founding fathers were so much SMARTER than the people of the French revolution", they should remember a few things: 1 - the American republic was founded on (and largely adapted to ) a society where slavery was an accepted everyday fact 2- the US had the advantage that once it had been recognized (in 1783), they didn't have to fight for the continued existence of the republic while discussing how it was going to be constituted and ruled. The French revolutionary terror happened at a time when the country was at war with several other European countries, all kingdoms. 3 - it took a long time before "one man, one vote - equal rights and equal votes" became an accepted norm in the US. In some ways it's still just half accepted.

In college in 1979 through 1981 I studied this period. All of my text books and my professor, an expert on this period of French history all noted that 1789 was a year with a bumper crop of grain. What caused the famine was that any grain sold in France was subject to price controls, so over 60% of the grain was exported to other countries. Now there was NO price controls on imported grain, so much of the French grown grain was brought back in as being from other countries, and sold for very large profits.

The sad thing is that King Louise 16'th and Queen Consort Merie were not harless rich people who looked down on the poor. in fact the king attempted to elleviate some of the heavey taxes on the poor by attempting to issue some reforms to the tax and land laws which were VERY out dated and Confusing and might have made sense in his grate grandfathers time but not his. His attempts to reform the tax system was unsuccessful due to many nobals blocking his attempts to reform bc the system benefitted them in some way or another. France allso was heavely in debt before he and merie ever sat on the throne. France was head over heels in debt due to them participating in many wars nd comeng out covered in shit and being forced to give up there empire. when a nation like france is in HEAVEY debt and it has no empire to fall back on to pay those debts the debts are passed onto the tax payers. Plus we forget the USA stiffed France after they helped them with the American revolution................the USA did not pay France what they promised for there help. All these things were the cuses of france's problems. True Merie s extravagance was defiantly a bone of contention but to be faire she was innocent of just how bad life was for most of the France she did not know much of France outside of life in the palace or the capitol. She did give 8 million francs to aid the poor every year and encouraged other nobles to do the same. She did finance the building and running of many hospitals and charity's that assisted the homeless , Prostates, unwed mothers and orphans. Merie was very compassionate especially to mothers, widows and children.but the truth they were not some allof uncaring assholes that is mostly Revolutionary proiganda that has been beleved to this day and has been disproven by historical fact and record.

She wasn’t executed by the guillotine, though. She was struck repeatedly on the head, stripped, possibly sexually abused, then eviscerated and beheaded, and her remains were defiled even further. The French people are proud of the French revolution which goal was the creation of the Republican regime and the abolition of the monarchy ; but, the massacres and the savagery perpetrated during this revolution must not be a motive of proudness; like the beheading of this princess and the exhibition of her head in the streets of Paris; they did the same with the heads of the king Louis XVI , Mary Antoinette, Robespierre and many innocent people; For me, it was a coup d'etat , not a civil revolution fighting for democracy.

Don't worry. The person responsible for the Reign of Terror was guillotined with extreme prejudice: Shitizen Robespierre. He was shot in the jaw with a pistol and went to his execution with a bandage around his head. Deserved every moment of terror as his head was chopped off with a very, very dull guillotine blade. Afterwards, Napoleon came to power and so ended the Revolution and enter the era of the Emperor of France. A Corsican brother.
