An absolutely amazing character. Standing on the evil side, yet surprisingly lonely - while with almost no emotions, somewhere deep in his mind he could still feel for his brother. He's certainly not a kind soul, but on the other hand I love the way he strictly followed a set of rules and orders surrounding his and his game's core values - His brother shot his shoulder, so he shot his shoulder back, instead of straight into the heart. He won the game, yet just like the protagonist, he didn't spend any of his prize money at all. Every detail I could see from this character is a beautiful complexity.

Yes we have to remember he’s not the main owner or the sick person that came up with the whole idea. He’s a moderator who has to make very big decisions otherwise his superiors will find a replacement. I’m sure if he didn’t shoot his brother, both of them would be ‘removed’ by the host’s bidding.

He IS the biggest villain. He was trying to steal 001’s empire by orchestrating the midnight fight which would eliminate the weaklings, 001 being one of the weakest in the fight. Watch 001 before the fight and after the fight, the director showed two scenes where 001 is completely behaving the opposite way. During the fight, the front man was searching on the thermal camera for a target, which is 001, but he couldn’t find him until 001 ordered him to stop the fight. 001 was dozing off before the fight, afterwards he stayed up all night when everyone else fell asleep, he forgot his name, he got a fever, he peed his pants… everything is showing he’s now scared and really playing the games rather than before he was just having fun fooling around. There’s also one tiny little detail is when the midnight fight was stopped and the police man was in the front man’s room, there’s a phone call, the front man picking it up saying there’s a little incident but the games will continue and as soon as he hanged up the phone, he sighed, it was a disappointing sigh, meaning his plan of getting rid of 001 wasn’t successful.

The front man has several layers to his character, he’s always behind a mask whenever we saw him (with the exception of after Jun-ho confronted him) so we never got to see how he reacted. In Red light Green light, he was shown to have a drink and watch the game, but that could be just to see if it was okay for the VIPs. When he shoots people, his hand is always trembling but he shoots rule breakers without hesitation because to him, it reminds him of how unfair life was out in the real world and in squid game, everyone should have an equal chance. He can’t just leave, and go to the police and report squid game because he was both an Ex-cop and he would have to mention his ties to the games in the first place. He knows the Korean Police wouldn’t do anything immediately, and thats why he can’t report the games. He can’t stop them, but he could definitely make sure its all fair.

I disagree with all the comments completely justifying him. I do believe part of him is good, in fact he did cry and feel horrible for killing his brother, which ia good. However, let's not forget he put on jazz music during game 1, and got himself a drink. Imo, he was definitely enjoying it. My idea is that he doesn't care if other people die, he isn't vicious or sadistic, but neither empathetic with the players. However, he might be empathetic with his family members and close people.

He is already a broken, traumatized person who has become a hostage of the system. He doesn't look like he likes it or not. He shows sympathy by telling the winner to think of the games as not the worst dream, understanding how a person feels after such games. He suggests that the main character get on a plane and not do anything stupid, knowing what the organizers are capable of in order to achieve their goals. He tried to talk to his brother, giving him indulgences and the opportunity to escape from the island (specifically aiming at the shoulder and not at the head, for example). It is clear that his hand is shaking at the moment of the shot. He doesn't kill for nothing, but only for breaking the rules. And he may be a good person who got here not from a good life and became a hostage of the games (whose background and motivation will be revealed in the new season).

He made allowances for his brother, he wanted to talk without complicating the situation, among other things. He was worried about what he had to do. This character is more like a hostage of games who can't just return to the real world. And he has his own motives, perhaps he also wants to close the games, not looking for allies, realizing that he cannot cope with this alone.

He didn't kill his brother, but saved him and let the stupid detective escape from the island. I deliberately aimed at his shoulder and not at his head, tried to talk and save him in disguise without arousing the suspicion of the guards. His drama and injuries can go much deeper. In the new season, light will be shed on his past and perhaps on the motives, the answer to how he became like this.

I don't know what it is about the Front Man that's left an impression on me. Perhaps it's the polygonal mask that looks alive as the light reflects off the surfaces, making it look like an old style video game model except this is live action. He did not enjoy life, but coped with emotions with the help of booze and music. This may be a protective mechanism of the psyche already traumatized by games and the work of the game manager. He was listening to music when he was treating the wound. He drank congratulating the winner. I gave the main character useful tips - treat the games as not the worst dream and get on a plane without doing anything stupid. It is not visible whether he likes it or not, since he is already a victim of the system and cannot so easily return to normal life. The role of the victim is more appropriate in this case. According to the creators, the background of the frontman is tragic and can shed light on his motives and character. Sometimes it is difficult to see what kind of person really is behind the mask. And I don't mean the black one he wears.

Since everyone else is posting their theories about the Front Man, I’ll just chime in. Personally what I think happened with him was he joined the Squid Game in 2015, won, but like Gi Hun had trouble adapting back to his normal life because of his experience in the games. Although he was now rich, a lot of the problems of his old life still existed and now he had the added trauma of the games, meaning he still felt like an outcast in society. The Squid Game organizers saw this and offered him the position. He felt that since his life in the real world was always going to be beyond his control, being in charge of the Squid Games was his one chance to take control over his own life and play on a playing field with rules familiar to him. He had a place where he fit in. It was all he knew anymore, and perhaps in a twisted way he thought he could “help” others like him in the process since in his mind the games are more fair and ordered than life in the real world, which is why he puts so much emphasis on what he sees as fairness. Seeing his brother again was a painful reminder of his old life, and he realized in that moment that there were still people from the outside world who cared for him and would have helped him, but he threw away all chances of adapting back to reality with his participation in the games. It was one of the last true deep connections he had with another person, as I doubt he was very close with any of his guards, and he just killed it (literally). This is not to excuse his actions. After you’re directly responsible for the murder of hundreds of people you’re a bad person. This is just saying I think there’s more to him then the stoic figure behind the black mask that we see most of the season. I hope we see more of him in season 2.
