The movie _Gunless_ is centered around the character "Montana Kid" and a frontier blacksmith who was also the town gunsmith as was often the case on frontier. BTW, the real-life "Montana Kid" settled a few miles from where I'm now at. Made friends with his great-great-grandson when I moved here and have visited his old ranch house numerous times.

I love the gun store scene in “The Good, The Bad and the ugly”! It’s not realistic at all, but it’s so cool, and pretty funny too. Too bad Ennio Morricone passed on, he did so much for western movie music. As always, a great video Santee!

I heard Eli Wallach knew nothing about guns and Sergio Leone told him to just go in there and mess around with all the parts and pieces. Learning that, made the scene even more amazing to me.

The scene wasn't all that unrealistic. He did swap parts between three examples of the same model gun, after all (Colt 1851).

Remington gave many small makérs a chance to get their idea produced and developed. He gave them room in factory, access to machines and advice and such all he wanted if the product was succesfull so it could be sold was his name on the gun also . Perhaps most influent foreign gunsmith and inventor who came to US was Borchardt,he worked among else on Winchester, where he saw much of leveraction. Then he was at Sharps with his design there ,Sharps Borchardt rifle. When he came back to Germany he designed his pistol.

Screws were also very rare. Mostly rich people had rifles made with screws, especially the fine muskets. Gunsmiths would hand make each one with a file. So it would be very expensive. If you look at lower quality rifles, alot of them only have 1 or 2 screws, the rest is help in place by pins or wedges.

I do quite a bit of gun smithing in my hometown on the weekends to earn spare spending money. It mostly consists of headapacing issues on bolt actions, refinishing blues or the wood stocks, and mounting scopes. On occasion though I break into a project that is an absolute nightmare with the worst being a brass frame 1858 Remington clone. It was horrendously out of time to the point where the owner could put it in half cock but the leading lever would land between two chambers. There was just about 100 things that coulda been wrong with the pistol. I offered to try my hand at some repairs and boy did I sucker myself with that. The barrel had been replaced and when it was the previous owner had screwed it in too far. The cylinder was dragging on the barrel which caused the whole action to be sluggish. Long story short, I had to shave down the barrel a bit to leave a gap between the cylinder and it. I had to break the entire revolver apart for cleaning and it has something like 30 years of dirt and grime crammed into the mechanism. Finally, I had to re-file the hammer and replace the nipples because some previous owner was a fan of dry firing. I can't imagine the nightmare of having to do this multiple times an day.

Great video Santee! Had a thought, I'm heading up to Lee's ferry this morning to go fishing and I wonder what fishing in the old west was like, any insight? Would they have used mostly manufactured fishing gear or home made fishing gear in the 1870s-1880s?

I would also like to hear abot that. How many do you think used lures compared to the hook and bait method?
@jordanhicks5131
@jordanhicks5131 3 жыл бұрын
@@bygodfreeman well a lure is easier to carry in the saddlebags than live bait, so I wouldn't be surprised if some guys kept a couple wooden plugs or some simple spoons made from a tin can in their saddlebags.

Gunsmiths were needed in most settlements. Unlike today’s society of replacing worn equipment or trading in for the latest model, people made do and made repairs to keep their firearms working.

@@ArizonaGhostriders Only 61 years later in 1587 another gun-related dynasty had it's beginnings north of the Alps-Krupp. They supplied small arms to the various factions in the 30 Year War (1618-1648) but are more closely linked to larger ones, their most famous product being the 420mm howitzer 'Big Bertha' as used during WW1. Probably more apt for your channel Krupp supplied the steel used to build the US railways.

for a simple technology(literally just hitting a piece of metal to cause a spark) it’s extremely complex and requires knowledge of how things are supposed to look and feel to get right the folks out west understood that those complex systems needed TLC better than anyone and respected the folks who built and repaired those tools

Aside from standing out in the desert sun? Well, I guess he could talk about wood-burning stoves (both the kind for heating as well as cooking) since everyone today is familiar only with oven rangetops and countertop appliances. Issues like banking the fire for the night, or the importance of having an airtight stove for the most efficient burn (a leaky stove presented problems in keeping the fire from burning out while you slept).
