Great video! From what I understood, Solana's main objective doesn't seem to be to takeover the crypto as money reserve industry but they trying to become an interface to everyday solutions. What I mean by this is that since they are attracting developers, the developers will build applications and the applications can become famous, If a lot of them succeed solana might become the standard for blockchain dev
@JohnCooganPlus2 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. It would be extremely difficult for Solana to displace Bitcoin as effectively "digital gold" - but it doesn't have to. There are plenty of reasons why you might be willing to sacrifice a bit on decentralization in favor of speed and low-cost.

I've been investigating crypto and solana for a few months, and it seems there are a couple fatal flaws in their system... First, the amount of tps they boast is mostly internal voting, and not actual transactions, the real money transaction can only like around 2%-5% of the total 50ktps they promote, granted, it's still a lot but definitely not capable of the entire financial system as you say. Second, solana has a flaw where it can basically be DDOSed or simply overwhelmed by a new protocol launching and crashing the whole network for almost a week like it happened a couple weeks ago...

Awesome explanation! DeFi is just becoming open finance. And a better consumer UI + progressively more decentralized backend might end up beating fully decentralized backend with progressively better UI (eth). Also having a more centralized team as solana does helps. John always breaks this stuff down so effectively!!

I always look forward to seeing what new great content you are going to drop on Mondays 🙌 Solana has some promising attributes. I think in the future there will be a dozen or so cryptocurrencies that will gain mainstream acceptance. People will regularly interact with multiple of them. Each crypto will tend to have specific uses i.e. Bitcoin as a store of value, ETH for smart contracts and NFT's, Solana for super fast transactions. For me, it's less about a race to the top (which crypto will be the largest) and more about the ecosystem and how the they will play into it.
@JohnCooganPlus2 жыл бұрын
100% agree with this. Clearly there are serious design trade offs that can’t be ignored, so having different solutions that make different trade offs makes a ton of sense.

I own some, but I'm skeptical that this will have staying power. With the attacks and restarts of the blockchain, I'm not sure if I can trust having a ton of money locked into the token. They have said this blockchain is in beta, so just another reason to be skeptical of investing in it. Hopefully it can get through growing pains and become more stable, otherwise I'll only invest small amounts into Sol. With the crazy competition in the space, it's a rough road for any project.
@dax48122 жыл бұрын
Not the best crypto, solana is highly centralized, its TPS is extremely inflated, more than 80% of trasaction volume is validator comunication, not user transactions. Also only 33% of validators is enough to take over the network. Cost to running a node is extremely high. The network is unstable, it stopped 6 times in last year. All this was not mentioned in the video...

overall, interesting video. A couple confusing points though: - why compare 30m crypto users having self-custody to facebook user base? I don't get the comparison... it doesn't help understand the % of crypto users that have self custody; fb user base statistics don't seem related at all? - you claim solana has built a more vibrant community due to the ease of getting SOL off of exchanges and onto a wallet which lets you own your private keys. Is that even relevant? every crypto in the top 50 market cap list should have such a wallet. On the other hand, your point about hackathon attendance growth definitely makes the point of a growing vibrant community very well.

With so many hacks it's clear that this much centralization is still compromising security and the people backing up Solana's project are big players from centralized financial companies and banks. So is Solana really the future? Or is it just a tweaked version of the old system? There is a reason a lot of banks are saying Solana is good because it aligns with their own interest and model. I'm not sure if they will need to sacrifice speed but they do need to be able to solve their security issues, as long as hacks keep happening, Solana is still not trustworthy and it can still fall. Maybe Proof of History or something similar might still be a way to go, but it can't be the way it is now.

VCs distributing (dumping) SOL to buyers in the name of Decentralisation is a red flag. A blockchain not withstanding DDoS attacks is very dangerous for the coin holders. The security of Solana is low. Just look up known hacker websites and forums. Hackaton participants are good giving their best, but if Solana had to restart the genesis block several times, the label "beta" should be replaced with "we need more time to build properly, but in the meantime you can risk your coins, we don't care."

I love this channel and what you do. The way you get information across, speak directly, and do not talk down or over heads - but rather break down complex topics at just the right length, all while using approachable verbiage and clear vocal patterns. Absolutely fantastic stuff. As an important sidenote: I loved Soylent Original flavor. I always describe it kind of like the taste of the milk at the bottom of your bowl of cereal. But here is an interesting take: I think there are other amazing applications to the Soylent concept - especially within the Diabetic space. A way to gather all your nutrients in an incredibly controlled environment, one that could be easily tracked by a patient's endocrinologist or other doctors, in order to maintain proper glucose and sugar balances, without overloading on carbs, etc. As a newly diagnosed diabetic myself, I couldn't imagine a better system than being able to just drink a few diabetic-formulated Soylents throughout the day with my normal regiment of insulin, perhaps with some filler solids or liquids throughout the day to replace nutrients/proteins/complex carbohydrates needed by my body throughout the day. A system like this, specialized, especially by a company who already knows the space and has experienced great success could do ABSOLUTE WONDERS for the diabetic community. I would love to talk to you more about this, should the concept intrigue you. Keep up the amazing work regardless - you're killing it. Your fan, Jake.

This is a great video on Solana. I think aside from being centralized (high barrier to run a Solana full node), the low fee network is also susceptible to DDOS attack which happen few times previously. Also, as the fees are very low, validators only earn a little on the block revenue as half of the transaction fees are burnt. Not sure how this is going to be sustainable.

Best documentaries about computing evolution & now the crossover between Internet & Crytocurrencies....Solana. Coogan's remarkably objective analysis of the topics he covers is displayed best in this video conducted at his trademark breakneck 'not a millisec wasted' style that demands the viewer's full concentration, pushing the info transfer rate to the max. Coogan's videos use a clever editorial technique. He zeros-in on the REAL hero, frequently a name unknown outside rarified computing or investment circles, jumping straight into the technical detail, perfectly pitched, always in context, then relieves the potentialy tiresome nerdiness by reintroducing the personality at pivot points in the story. Guaranteed to give the viewer dozens of "Aaaah, that's why that/those/they/...." revelatory lightbulb moments as Coogan reveals the decisions that have consequently made and lost fortunes. His objective commentary on personalities is engaging, fascinating but never descends to tabloid fawning. Coogan, obviously a computing guru in his own right, has that all-too-rare skill of presenting a highly complex, multilayered, fast-paced topic in an easy to understand way. "If you can't teach it to a six year old, then you don't know it yourself" A.Einstein. Indeed!
