One additional comment: while reviewing the video I noticed that I will also put fingers 2 and 3 down slightly ahead, use them as a post/anchor, and then drop 1 and 4 down. This is especially helpful when there are no guide fingers and the chord must be prepared "from the air."

Thanks! What is the reason for not just using the barre all the time?

Good question! I've got a couple reasons, but my approach is always tailored to the specific moment: First, if you are coming from an open G (the chanterelle), a barre can cut it off prematurely. This can really wreck a nice legato line. Second, I hate doing extra work and since the barre is not technically needed to play the chord in a lot of situations, I don't use it unless called for. All that said, these are my personal experiences with the chord shape and you should certainly find what works best for you! If the barre makes it more reliable/easy for you, do it! : ) Hope that helps!
