The son of Italian parents and born in Philadelphia as Alfred Arnold Cocozza, Lanza was only 38 when he succumbed to an apparent heart attack.

Oh, how I loved Mario Lanza as a child. I cried my heart out when I found out he had died. I was only six. I can remember him singing "Nessun Dorma" and it touched me so deeply, I cried. His singing could provoke joy and tears. So tragic he died so young, yet, what a mark he left on the world of opera in films.

Mario Lanza inspires me with his marvellous voice but also his personality that endeared him to so many. I am 79 years old and have admired him ever since l saw the film, The Toast of New Orleans. Thank you for the posibility to hear him again.

Yo tenía 14 años cuando falleció Mario Lanza, y sentí una tristeza y rabia por lo que representaba para mí Yo hacía clases de solfeo y canto y él (junto a Luis Mariano) eran mi inspiración. Me dejaron huérfano, Lanza con 39, y Luis con 54..se me fueron, y con ellos las voces más bellas del mundo. D.E.P.

Freddy (Mario) was my grandmother’s neighbor in south Philadelphia she told my mom she would hear his mom saying in their bakery how proud she was of her son RIP
