The significant drawback of WTT revolution is the Camera angle. It is rare to find individuals who favor the side way. Personally, I prefer the approach taken during the 2000 World Team Table Tennis Championships; instead of settling for a fixed oblique angle, they didn't stick with the oblique angle, the camera work was dynamic, moving around, and replays were shown from an alternate side, showing audiences the game from both sides.

Correct, side camera angle does not work at all. The love of our sport is based, not only on the speed of the ball and rallies, it is also on the spin and curvature the ball makes with every serve and topspin. With the side camera angle, we lose all the charm. Whoever decided that change, to favor more advertisement instead of the pleasant view of the sport , is a stupid moron.

We need to get a lower angle to see the spin, but they are reluctant to do this because of a lack of sponsors. Otherwise the best option for angle is probably what they were using for the 2013 grand finals, great balance.

Biggest killer to making it watchable is the god awful angle they stream. You could have amazing rallies with side spin and a spectator would just see a flat back and forth rally because you can’t see the effect of the ball. So it’s just boring to watch.

Sometimes it's really too dark..but probably due to the poor lighting in some tournaments.. I found the last smash very nice..the diagonal angle was phenomenal.. They should stick to it

You are asking the wrong people. If you want to attract more people to be interested in the sport. You have to ask non players. We want the sport to grow. Not the colors necessarily. Coolness, fun, competiveness, and athletes are some of the reasons why you would want to play the sport. It's not about just the color. I am a hard die fan of the sport, and unfortunately, the federation is not doing a great job at promoting the sport in school systems here in the U.S. it needs former professionals to show case their skills to the youth. Just my opinion. Also, professionals should speak about the strategy behind the game. For example: angles, spin, control, speed, and types of players like choppers vs. offensive players. When I played as a youngster with another talented person, I would create a crowd around me due to the skills of me and my opponent .

I agree with a lot of this. I would also add that the quality of match commentary makes a huge difference to the viewers' experience. I personally really like Adam Bobrow's commentary, but I think it would be great to have more ex-pros (co-)commentating. More content like post-match analysis videos would be brilliant too.

More important is to make superstars.. to make them cool, intresting, prise money, then to hype tthe sport.. noone value sport.. for example table tennis is second sport wher you use mind .. first is chess 😉

@fortitude1208 I agree, I think personality in the players is huge in attracting interest. Respect is important. However, it never hurts to have emotion and a little drama. For example: the video where Adrianna Diaz is consoling Bruna Takahashi due to her loss. It was a beautiful moment where 2 players that have been playing against each other since they were kids build a friendship beyond table tennis.

For my aesthetics, blue floor + green table with white lines (but light orange balls). I am happy with red rubber, but sometimes I go for blue or green as well.

Thank you TableTennis11! When I saw the title of this video I was sure the subject would be the effect of the 40+ plastic balls. They move faster through the air and spin less, or at least spin has less of an effect and so its easier to play near the table. It gave the young players with quick reactions but less athleticism a chance to dominate by staying close to the table and get wide angles to finish points early. The result has been shorter, less athletic rallies. Worse for the the players, worse for the spectator worse for diversity of playing styles. Surely the obvious thing to do is to go back to the 40mm celluloid ball? It seems there is no accountability for these decisions. While I don't like the new colours personally, its mostly a tradition and cosmetic issue. The plastic ball is the real funeral of table tennis. I would love to see a video on this subject.

I like the black background and accent colors. Most players say the blue table, because they are used to it, or because they train on it. Standing next to the table (I am not a pro, just seen it up close) they are all the same. Anyone no-player whom I've spoke with preferred the black setup, because it looks cool and they said it's easier to see the white ball on it (not counting the bad light setups, I've shown them normal ones). For the camera angle, every player I've spoke with preferred another angle to the side one. Many of them said they would want the old angle back, but when I asked them about the diagonal one, nearly all of them changed their mind and said that's the best. For non players, most of them preferred the diagonal view, some said that the side or back one looks better, because it's 'more professional'. I have to add, I just can't watch matches with the classic back camera setup anymore. It's the worst, objectively. The closer player obscures the most of all angles.You can't see the height of the ball properly. You can't see the speed difference as much either. In the side view, you can see the arc of the ball and the speed of the ball and the ball doesn't go behind the players all the time. But you lose lateral depth, so it looks a little more bland. A diagonal angle has speed, has height, depth except the camera axis and the ball is less hidden than in the back view. The best we have ever had is the 2017 Swiss open.

Honestly i dont care. Camera quality, cut, angle, distance to the table and so on are way more important to me. And WTT does a horrible job with those. Black table becomes greasy very quick. But black table and white ball sounds like a good idea to me thinking about contrasts.

Colors are a bit accessory. The real revolution in table tennis in the last decades were more 21 to 11 pts, 38 to 40mm and then (the most important, this one the hugest change for table tennis) celluloid to plastic balls... now more physical, less technical, less effects...

I absolutely loved this video. As a video producer, I agree completely w/ the TV guy. By far the most important detail is contrast. You need to be able to differentiate between structures. Lighting is very important in bringing out that contrast and making it look good and dial that in with what the camera senses. For players, it doesn't matter as much since the human eye is much better at picking out objects. However, too often I go to the tt club where one side of the table sucks because the light blooms in your face (too much glare), and the other side has much better contrast. Or one side is too dark while the other side is too bright. The other issue is the color of the background or wall. Orange walls are by far the worst in my opinion. For some reason the white balls don't contrast as much w/ orange. But white walls can also be a problem. That's why a lot of clubs do off-white to cut down on glare. But for TV, you can literally do any color as long as you light it correctly and provide enough contrast between objects/structures. The human eye tends to be attracted to blue and orange more though. That's why in movies you see a common color grading technique where human skin tone is orange and everything else around the person has a blue tint to it. The recent Joker movie did a fabulous job with that. Also, I particularly like the PBS Masterpiece Theatre series produced by the BBC called, Miss Scarlet and the Duke. In that series, the color grading on most indoor scenes exaggerates the blue on the walls with an excellent blur/fading of the effect, while skin tones pop. That is why in table tennis people tend to prefer blue tables - the human eye prefers blue and orange (tables contrast w/ human skin, even when you consider people of different ethnic backgrounds and skin colors).

Fan case: the color cannot be of the aggressive ones like red, yellow, orange of even "ice blue" After 2hrs of watching eyes are tired for most cases. The green floor or in shades of grey would be better. Floor should differ from the table Player case: the color of the floor is meaningless unless is the same as table black+black blue+blue cause players dont have much time to look at the floor unless they are looping in the long range :) Everyone should mention (especially that "sports director") that for broadcast ,which is the most popular medium, more than colours the crucial thing is bitrate. Look at old videos from olympics when the quality is max 720p but u see ball all the time and more. As you know table tennis is one of the best sport to play but certainly not to watch. Lets hope they will not change the game but change everything around it :)

IMO it's all about contrast. If the ball has better contrast with blue, black or red that's the most important color combination. Is it easier to see the white ball against blue or yellow ball against black?

What happened to Green tables with white lines. Many of the tables in the US clubs are this color combo...and ultimately it really depends on the background color and floor color.

I think the contrast and clarity for the TV viewers is extremely important. Black table with white ball is best but floor perhaps should not be the same as table to show another contrast.

For me the most important thing is that the video is 50 FPS - I think the higher frame rate is a huge improvement when watching this sport. The camera angle should most likely be diagonal from above. I find the black table color very pleasant to watch because of the maximum contrast to the ball.

The Blue green//sanai was the perfect one with or without. Line is for doubles and otherwise white lines not necessary . Personally one on one is safe and not complicated. Tibhar teamed with sanai but water blue green is universal and I'm surprised it took so long for anyone to get it???😮

god, everything but this aweful eye cancer causing red floor and blue table! it just looks sooooo outdated and last century. and i say that as somebody working with color (photography & film). black and black is the hottest. newest. and i think this is what we want and should want. the background light strips might be a bit too much, but the appearance is just fresh. other colors work too, but just no red floors please with blue. it might be working fine in terms of understanding the game, but then table tennis feels exactly like so many clubs that are full with old white men mostly. i'm very grateful for the change!

Table : 1.BLUE, 2.green, 3.purple (why not?) ..all with white lines. Floor it could be :1.Red, 2.blue, .3 black (idk). Rubber: Red (what i use), Black, Blue, Purple, Pink, Green. I wonder why ittf rules are for at least 1 rubber black. Why not another color as long the colors of the rubbers are different? For example 1 color blue (FH) and 1 color green (BH) .

It seams like the main two important thing is not have the table and the floor be the same colour, and people prefer blue with white lines mostly because that is what they will have been training on the majority of the time. If black tables with coloured lines were the industry standard that everyone trained on, then I recon the skew would be towards those tables in that case, as it's what ppl are used to. However, I think it should be mentioned that the opinion on casual non-player viewers (especially of younger generations) will be skewed to black tables as they look cooler. Personally, I think black table with coloured lines make the most sense, as it is all in contrast to the ball, and so not only makes it easier to see the ball the whole time while playing (no white on white) but also makes it better as a viewing experience.

My theory is that they want the whole arena black so it doesn't look so unnatural when they make the (barely there) audience dark. You might see a few people at the front and everyone else is barely visible with a little bit of red light. Terrible atmosphere. However, I'm surprised that nobody ever plays with orange balls - I can just see them much better. Especially when I play myself - at the bottom, there are almost exclusively green and blue tables, rarely one in black, but always with white lines.

I don't like black tables because I'm used to see the shadow of the ball on the table. Medium grey would be better for me rather than black. But blue or green would be even better in my opinion.

I'll add my 2 cent..... Funny to hear the kids of today say that Blue is traditional. I am 61 and have played for most of my life... I can say that I don't EVER remember a Blue table until much later in my life (at least not many of them). Green with white line is way more traditional. Now for the lines. I HATE IT! To play with white lines or ANYTHING painted white and when playing with a white ball is ridiculous. I can't tell you how many times I loose the ball do to octiculation and eye sight. That is the ability to differentiate colors when they are too close. I flat out 'loose' the white ball over the white lines and sometimes even the top of the net. This is exactly why a Fighter Jet was painted Dark on top and White on the bottom. Back then Optical lock missiles would loose their 'lock' on target when the pilot would roll the plane. Same concept! As for floor and walls, well that depends on the color of ball (white or orange) In all I hate the blue table. There is not enough contrast between the light blue that is used and white! Here is the big one: The Rubber Color, to my knowledge, at the time the color was set in stages due to people using 'junk' rubber and twiddling the bat. They knew it was a problem so why did they just outlaw the 'junk' It has to go! However, the rule went to 2 colors.... so people would use black and maroon which at high speed was too hard to tell the difference. So the rule was then 2 distinct colors. So the people that had to bring 'junk' to the table (instead of just their own skill), would then try to continue the deception and use 2 colors like yellow and red or another combination that again was too hard to see at high speed. So then the powers to be said enough... RED and BLACK! So with that said... remove the 'junk' ....problem solved!!! Mic Drop!

I like the black tables theres less reflection. The blue tables at my club reflect too much of that fluorescent lighting on the table. Annoying for people with astigmatism

I thought he was the player who forcefully tried to bully the ITTF referee because his opponent made a involuntary sound and then proceeded to catch the ball in his hand and start arguing with the referee instead of playing the point out and then raising a complaint. ITTF is actively trying to make Table-tennis MORE EXPENSIVE 😞 What for ? More funding ? Isnt it easier to increase Prize-money instead of wasting on Cinema theatre levels of wasteful lighting and painting and additional expensive equipment ? Table-tennis already has a very dark history, we should reduce the amount on money involved in Non-Sport spending and invest it in the Players ! Table-tennis equipment manufacturers should realise by now that the miniscule amount of non-Red and non-Black rubbers sold is so tiny that it can't sustain that much Table-tennis equipment stocks. ITTF needs to worry about unclear Rules, like service-toss and bad-referee calls. ITTF should keep the game consistently high-performance and high-quality. Not increase the cost of camera, lighting, flooring, tables, rubbers+equipment forcing more of these costs on the organizers and eventually the Players.

It has been scientifically confirmed that black color causes hard strain on the eyes because you can't see its depth in terms of orientation. Over time, it makes a significant difference. I'm 100% for blue color for table. Sports, especially tournaments, should focus on viewers' and players' comfort.

Personally I like new style and the viewing angle. I can feel impact of the ball much better. Strokes are much better. The Shooting quality is also much better so I can emphasize the ongoing action better. Is there any statistics that ball is going back and forth much less or higher?

I really do not like the black look. We are affected by colors and the black look is depressing. Make it colorful. Also you dont see the audience anymore. It might be easier to see the ball but i dont think so. Lets see the audience also.
