I feel like Kermit at the keyboard as soon as I saw your decision to put Daryl Hall on the honorable mentions list and then start off with Rick Astley. Daryl Hall could have made “I Can’t Go for That,” and then died the next day and have been in the top three. Good to see David Byrne getting some love. No matter how he's described (quirky, funky, unique, strange,) there's no denying his musical genius. Byrne has a legacy of creating amazing genre-defying music and his production skills are peerless. The first 3 Talking Heads albums are a must for any respectable music collection. If you are in the mood to treat yourself to something special watch "True Stories" his 1984 directorial debut, co-written by the legendary Stephen Tobolowsky. Let's also not forget the cinematic film scores he's composed such as "The Last Emperor". Just saying, that's a lot of funk for one man.

Switched from guitar to piano when he got shot in the finger, ran a brothel, performed with live snakes and dumped glitter on audiences, had a muppet based on him, had his birthday declared Dr. John day in NOLA, played on countless chart topping songs in the 60s and 70s, won 6 Grammys, AND has a song on the Skate 3 soundtrack.

Bobby Caldwell is the perfect person to top this list, thanks for also adding Paul McCartney, Phil Collins and Michael McDonald. Those three guys often get criticized for being corny but they’re definitely soulful as well. I think Rick Astley should have been higher on the list, and I think Daryl Hall should have met the cut. I'd just like to state that as much of these artist are fine picks the fact that the only bassist on this list was George is insane. Flea is one of the funkiest white boys in the world and hit every part of the criteria, but also missing Les Claypool from Primus who has the Bootsy Collins seal of approval is insane. Someone also mentioned the lack of Bowie which is crazy, this should have just been a unnumbered list so that it could be added to later instead of a top 10. Foxy Shazam also should be on this list but that may also open the pandora's box to Macklemore considering that feature was one of their breaks into the mainstream. Honorable Mentions to Benny Sings and the band "The Whitest Boy Alive" from me though, Benny is a little to quiet to hit that funk-o-meter outside his music but still. Should also probably mention "I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME" as they are one of the former Panic! at the Disco line-ups IIRC and the get pretty funky.

Some very interesting choices here, including some people I have to look up now. But my first thought was Kraftwerk: once described as “so stiff they’re funky”, their rhythms and robot aesthetic inspired so many genres that anyone dancing since about 1980 has been influenced by their Teutonic groove. Hip hop, electro, house and techno all owe a lot to them, and there’s a video from mid-80s Detroit showing people going absolutely mad to the cyberspace funk madness of Numbers. After them, I’d have to mention James Murphy from LCD Sound System, Giorgio Moroder, Brian Eno (he’s one of the reasons Talking Heads found the funk), and Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher. Not only does Tom push Drum & Bass into new dimensions, as a bassist he’s a jazz fusion funk berserker. Let the bass kick!

When that jamiroquai video dropped in the 90s.. I swear to God, everybody's heads exploded. No one had ever seen the music video of that caliber with such an amazing song to pair with it. and that s*** was 24/7 on MTV.. and honestly being a teenager that grew up in the year 2000 I was thirteen and since that is my generation I do have to rep for KoRn and nu metal because, it was ours. Every generation has their terrible terrible artists with, new metal is far from the worst offender 😂 but jamiroquai definitely opened up my mind to a lot of different new and experimental music. Some really well thought out arguments here. Especially appreciate the Michael McDonald inclusion. But while it’s seems to be beating a dead horse, including Radiohead while not even mentioning the Chili Peppers in the honorable mentions is pretty egregious.

George Michael should have topped this list, followed by Michael McDonald. The list should also have included KC (of the Sunshine Band), Boy George, Go West (a personal favorite of mine, but not very well known), Boz Scaggs, Simply Red, and Robert Palmer. I appreciate that you like Bobby Caldwell; his voice is amazing. But seriously, anyone other than George Michael voids the list. I'm also curious why you chose not to include Daryl Hall. He wasn't predominantly an R&B singer, but damn, he can bring it on when you want the funk.
