Join me in Derbyshire as we follow the beautiful chesterfield canal as the restoration continues in the west, aiming to plug the gap and join the rest of the restored Chesterfield Canal as it winds its way down to the River Trent.
Today we are at Staveley looking at the second part of the Staveley town deal. Under the massive road bridges and away from the old open cast line which now holds the basin. Here several railways crossed the canal which are now abandoned and the planned HS2 depot was to cross. Now the trans pennine trail needs to cross the canal at a new footbridge that takes the cycle way across the canal. Then the canal follows down onto puddlebanks which is a fascinating area which we explore today, from interlocking clay blocks to a massive aqueduct as the canal goes high on an embankment winding it's way through towards the Norbridge Arm, Renishaw. Killamarsh and towards the locks and Norwood Tunnel

You should see it now, the ramp and steps behind you at the start of the video have all gone, and new temporary footpaths have been put in place over the old railway line, and the foundation for the new foot bridge are starting to go in 👍🏻

Still amazes me that the canal network attracts so much tourism that its not centrally funded and supported by the government on a much larger scale.

I know, it’s crazy 6.1 billion it’s worth every year to the economy and health and well-being benefits. They give a little over £50 million and that’s reducing 🤦🏻‍♂️

I'm amazed you can see the bottom of the river Doe Lea. Once the most polluted river in the country. Used to cross it every day to go the school.

The Trust are clearly on a roll, though the last nine miles present some stiff challenges to overcome, if they are to complete the restoration in a decade. Thanks for the update.

apparently the bank in the last video has gone already! Footings are going in for the bridge at the moment so it’s a good start

Would you explain something about the land ownership at present of the canal right of way? I'm always curious as to how these projects could be abandoned and after a century or more of neglect and limbo, the canals can be watered and become anew components of the national infrastructure. I am fascinated by the engineering challenges but the legal issues can be just as challenging.

It depends on each situation but the general rule is when it’s abandoned it goes back to the original land owner or those now up against it, that’s what makes canal restoration so hard to achieve is you have to deal with hundreds of different landowners. Some went to the council which you’d think would be easier but unless they are fully on board it makes it very difficult

@@CourtAboveTheCut I don't want to suggest that you step on anybody's toes, yet I think adding the details of the legal and rights of way challenges would enhance the narrative as to what is required to revitalize these ancient infrastructure projects

@@annarboriter the issue is I rarely come across it, Paul whitewick covers it regularly but generally I can get to the bits I want. Saying that I’m filming on the Ashby this weekend and there’s a large section which will be difficult because of it now running through farms

No, my wife has absolutely no interest at all! We go on boat trips whenever I can convince her it’s a good idea.
