No other futuristic racing game so far comes close to scratching the same itch as F-Zero in terms of precise and twitchy control, unforgiving challenge, or even personality. F-Zero is worth bringing back but it'd be one hell of an uphill battle to sell more people on F-Zero and Nintendo clearly isn't interested in making the effort for it since they already have semi-similar properties that already appeal to a much wider audience.

I sincerely appreciate that Nagoshi continues to show interest in a serious continuation of the F-Zero franchise, even if he is seemingly talking to a gigantic Nintendo-shaped brick wall. I'm all too confident that the series may not be able to "innovate" past its current state, but GX alone is such a unique game that I would not mind seeing *more* of that. The future of racing released 18 years ago, and I feel like the whole world deserves another taste of "the future".

I wouldn't add star fox among those. Mixed as Zero's reception is, it's still a fairly recent thing, plus they officially released the previously cancelled star fox 2 not long ago either. Kid Icarus though seems especially cruel. You have a whole huge revival after like 30 years that's universally beloved and I imagine decently successful yet just... Leave it after that. Though I guess it's moreso just the bad luck of sharing your main producer with smash bros and we all which project Nintendo would rather have him prioritize

Miyamoto's statement regarding the "oh, we must innovate at ALL COSTS" is a pretty frustrating statement primarily because this entire notion isn't shared with half the games Nintendo farts out. Kirby, for example, isn't exactly evolving much. It's the same game with a new mild gimmick every game, yet the forced spirit of innovation isn't preventing those games from shipping. So many years have passed, a remake of GX would be worth it just because an entire new generation could have their hand at it. What do I want from a new F-Zero game? Well, F-Zero. You don't need to reinvent the wheel every single time to do well, and Nintendo certainly knows this.

Someone recently posted an 'F-Zero 99' idea on the F-Zero subreddit. Basicly the SNES F-Zero online with 98 other racers. After each lap only the the top X racers can continue. (Just like in the original game, only now going until 1 person is left). So a 99-game for Switch online, but with F-Zero. To me that sounds like a perfect way to reintroduce F-Zero. Anyone interested should look it up on the F-Zero subreddit.

Im one of those few selected, got all the cups, on all the difficulties with all the machines, but while I felt realized and satisfied, the sheer frustration it made me endure left me with no incentive to do it again, so I just retired altogether, after that, whenever I find myself playing it again I do it on normal difficulty at best, so I could better appreciate other aspects like the visuals or music. Im one of those that feel that a sequel is not that necessary just because the last entry was almost a Magnus Opus, so at least the franchise died while it was on its Climax (no pun intended). that being said, I temporally returned to the racetrack when the FAST series debuted, and I can certainly consider it a worthy spiritual successor.

Miyamoto says that it needs "innovation" and many disagree, including myself. However, F-zero does need something. It needs completion, a zenith to reach. GX came close, but not quite. GX does not have an X-cup, F-Zero X did. GX did not have a custom track maker and editor, X did. Neither supported online play, and X in my opinion had a much better aesthetic, art, and music direction, a "heavy metal" magazine vibe rather than GX's generic techno vibe (and dont get me wrong, I like techno, but F-Zero is best as a well done "heavy metal 2000" vibe). F-Zero X also had the "death race" (basically battle) mode, and GX did not. GX had the story mode, missions, and far superior graphical quality. GX also had custom machines, which X did not. Lastly, the biggest "innovation" that could be done for F-zero would be Virtual Reality visor compatibility for a genuine first person in the machine perspective. A shift in perspective like this can go a long way to a radically different gameplay experience. F-Zero needs to be completed, not innovated. Its like a David statue, 95% completed, all the pieces are there to reach perfection. So close, yet so far.

After Star Fox Zero, Miyamoto's "new control schemes being the only way forward for dormant IP" argument holds about as much water as a leaky bucket. Weird as it sounds, I'd much prefer it if the financial prospects of F-Zero were the main thing holding it back than one stubborn creative being its gatekeeper. I think some manner of battle royale multiplayer would be a good fit for the series' cutthroat, 30+ racer action.

Also, Pro F-Zero GP where there's no extra lives & retry; You crash & retire--Next Track w/ no points earned...and maybe Esport Tournaments? Finally; NO FORCED GIMMICK CONTROLS. I love Starfox Zero & the controls clicked with me but I'm minority--option select of classic or new stuff. We the players know what we want (HD, online, track editor (even better with the touchscreen on Switch like Mario Maker 2), and now the ability to play the same game on the go on Switch), but that won't get Nintendo to green-light a new F-Zero if they keep looking back at the 2003-2004 period as the last sales reference. That's also extremely strange considering how long ago that time period was and how the gaming landscape has changed so much since then.

There was no other series like it. Pulse pounding music, adrenalin rush racing, blazing through tight corners and spirals, hitting mind blowing speed and ripping through tracks, all the variety of characters that had their own themes, the distinctive locations and course variety... I wish Nintendo would bring it back. It won't have the same spirit or soul. GX was the last of the great games and the peak of the series. I had the pleasure and frustration of mastering the game and loved the challenge. Beating the game was so rewarding. I miss that era of Nintendo...

I know it's a bit frustrating, but not many IPs can say they died on a good note as F-Zero did. And F-Zero does (sorta) live on through Mario Kart. Way way better of a fate than being dragged through the mud and carried solely by meme power or being strapped to a generator, drained dry of all of its resources, but continues on because it continues to put out big numbers-or just completely forgotten to the passage of time.

F-Zero is my favourite racing series ever so it's a shame that it's been absent for so long. I don't think a sequel needs to reinvent the wheel every time so it's a shame that Miyamoto has that mentality. I don't think he contributing much to the series besides maybe producer or supervisor but I believe he has a lot of involvement in many of Nintendo's decisions. I would just love a new F-Zero game like GX on modern systems with online. I'm impressed with your F-Zero skills. The only characters I beat Grand Prix on the highest difficulty was Bio Rex & Falcon.

From someone who's never played an fzero game. It looks super fun to master. And I think I know how the game could evolve in general, it's an overused concept but I think it might fit for it Fzero 99, turn it into a battle royale game now that the tech is there and you can fill the lobbies for it

1. Instead of recharge ground, have it recharge orbs/barriers. This allows getting the same charge no matter what speed you go through the recharge zone. 2. Instead of instant death after shield depleted/falling off course, have a Latichu type mechanic pull you to the center of the road but takes a long ass time. This ensures no one is totally out of the fight making everyone you've knocked out a threat possible later in the race. 3. Make courses slightly longer and/or make it more laps. All the actual professional races in the real word are built off of endurance as well as who is the fastest. This helps point 2 giving the knocked back players a chance to come back for revenge. 4. Make courses travel to different places like how they do it in the Outrun series. You're telling me for how fast these machines are going they never travel beyond the zone's limits? 5. Add assist "items". Notice I didn't say "weapons" since this isn't a Mario Kart type series. Like auto pilot for X seconds. Or an ability to freeze time so only you can go for X seconds while everyone is frozen for that time. These types of items don't punish good players but it helps the people in the back. Also for "expert play" simply turn these items off. 6. Force pit stops like they do in some professional racers. Like lose the ability to grip the road for example. Also for example going too fast and too often could tear up your machine forcing you to pitstop. 7. Make attacking consume even a small amount of energy. Now this becomes a gambling situation. Do you really want to attack and miss and now you have less energy? 8. Make a perfect timed block on attackers. Like the parry system from 3rd Strike. Gain some energy from a perfect block and retaliate if you wish. If you wish because your attack could also be perfect timed blocked back. In addition, mis-timing the block makes you lose energy forcing people to stop spamming attempting to block. 9. In addition to 8 this one is debatable: Make boost and health/shield two separate bars? The person in the front doesn't have to attack meanwhile everyone behind has to juggle between attacking/blocking/boosting if it's still just one bar. 10. In addition to 8: Make the spin attack also perfect time blockable and make the spinner completely stop and machine disabled for X seconds. This puts a gamble situation do you really want to spin attack. Flip side successful spin attacks gives much health/shield back. 11. Add "boost zones" like a warp speed section. Taking someone out here puts the person in grave deficit since the person taken out now had to start at the back of the boost zone. 12. Evolving stages. Say lap 2 a comet destroys a section of the course now that part of the stage is no longer usable. If a person who's being lapped just so happens to be in that comet's path? Too bad, you're too slow, you're being lapped anyway. 13. Choice evolving stages. Whoever is in the lead from lap 1 the start of lap 2 gets to choose what events happen to change the course. 14. Like how Mario Kart does it now why not have stages with no laps, just a straight shot to the finish. This is kind of point 4. 15. More racers at once, increase the number to 50 or even 100. 16. Mario Kart and GTA5 actually already did this but imagine a futuristic version: machine goes from ground vehicle to underwater vehicle to aircraft mid race for certain parts of the track. 17. Have checkpoints. This is really just to help stop glitching the game for some "speedrunners" and this is just a personal point for me. It's not impressive to me when I see your machine just flying around the air off the track and magically you're already on lap 2. By putting checkpoints all throughout the laps this helps stop this exploit. I fucking love GX and badly want a new F-Zero.

I didn't play all F-Zero games, but I spent a fair share of my N64 time in F-Zero X. In fact, I just recently finished GX's Story Mode after seeing so much about it the past 20 years. What I do know is, Captain Falcon will always prevail. Racing his way to our hearts. We love F-Zero, even if there won't be any new games.

This was a great video. But the ending was a bit conflicting to me. While I can appreciate the sentiment that F-Zero ending without the company churning.out a new entry every year, I still can’t say I really think X or GX are feeling like the pinnacle that they once were. Sure, there might be a lot of passion. But a lot of the new content in GX feels pretty half-baked. But then again, so does X. F-Zero even today has its flaws rolled up on it’s sleeve, but I still highly enjoy it because it offers an expierence no other series can offer, not even the indie developers that attempt to say they’re inspired by this series. I hope it comes back, and fixes issues I’ve had with the series. But I won’t hold my breath for the next 15 years. Edit: To me, my biggest wishes for the series is to actually make multiplayer more than just 4 racers. It always feels so small racing in a track made for 30 racers. More modes is better. Bring back death race. Bring back Track editor. And give us a career mode for Deathborn’s sake, I always wanted that in F-Zero. Balance out the racers way better than in X or GX. Give us more music options besides just Mute City/Big Blue SNES. Maybe add in flying sections like they were going to in Zero Racers. Or go back to Super Cars. Just a taste of any of the concepts they can expand upon. Also characters and story certainly do need to be improved from GX and GP Legend. I can think of quite a lot of newer ideas and older ideas they can try again. But I don’t think Nintendo cares.

This is a beautiful love letter to one of the best series of all time, a series that was pushed to the absolute limit everytime, these games were my childhood, even though I wasn't that good at it. I love this world, I wish it got like an anime movie, in the style of the movie Redline would be amazing. Nice review Ps. I would love to see more of the world and interactions between the characters. There's so much that was implied to exist from the racer profiles, aliens that came from war-torn planets to race for their people, deranged war veterans, hair-brained biological experiments, cyborgs, psychopaths, undead returning from centuries past to race again, or just dudes trying to raise money for their orphanage. It's all wacky and silly, and each character has such a unique flavor that they feel like protagonists in their own anime. Seeing such a diverse and eclectic setting built upon, with a narrative embrace for the wildness of the characters that inhabit it, would be a fantastic starting point for a sequel. They have a very rich world that they've built, and it would be a shame for that to be unexplored.

This feels refreshing. Feels nice to see a positive retrospective from you after all this time after the double whammy that was the Sonic and Smash videos. F-Zero is a series I enjoy whenever I get the opportunity to play it. It's definitely hard though and requires patience to understand. X also has one of my favorite soundtracks ever in a Nintendo game but GX is still pretty good, though I admittedly prefer Hidenori Shoji's other work (see below). Also curious if you'd be interested in trying Nagoshi's other golden goose, the Yakuza series, since while a different experience entirely, you can see a lot of design philosophies that reflect on not only his past work but Sega as a company.

It feels like the 3 mainline F-Zero games all build up mainly in the field of graphics and control, and GX perfected both of those. That’s why I think a new F-Zero would probably have to shine artistically, maybe some kind of anime/3D style or hand drawn kinda look? I don’t really see any other way F-Zero could truly “evolve” like Nintendo wants it to

Wienie Hut Jr = Mario Kart Salty Spitoon = F-Zero In Mario Kart you have many things to help you win, in F-Zero it takes percision, good drifting and handling while driving at insane speeds so fast that if you blink, you die. Any small mistake is entirely your own fault. It’s exactly why both franchises deserve to co-exist. One is more casual and luck based, the other is more competitive and skill based. Perhaps Nintendo doesn’t want it’s own series cannibalizing each other. But even then Mario Kart would still be a Massive hit on it’s own even if F-Zero was still up a kicking.

Great video, thank you for shining a light on such an under-represented and forgotten series! I've adored these games for decades, from the speed and thrill to the look and feel of everything. I've almost unlocked all the AX racers, and am close to getting to the tracks too- though Story Mode 9 still eludes me. One of these days I wish to find an AX machine.

It really is frustrating at times to often think back on where F-Zero (and gaming to an extent) *should* be at this point in time. All F-Zero gets really is cameos, instead of a proper entry or some way for the current audience to access the games instead of porting the SNES game over and over again. A few antigrav games can kind of placate F-Zero fans, such as Aero GPX and Super Pilot. But neither have the universe F-Zero fans are familiar with (it's a Bug Fables/Paper Mario type of situation). Still there's worse fates. We've had to rely on emulation and rom scenes for years. And thank goodness for mods in other games that try to include F-Zero as well such as Trackmania United for example, and even that one Sonic Mania mod. That even stretches to games that allow character, vehicle, or track creation. They would be some way to at least keep F-Zero alive and featured through other current games. I suppose one takeaway is that at least there's folks still doing F-Zero related things. It could always be worse.

F-Zero I feel isn't really the type of series that needs to innovate all that much considering I would still say there aren't ANY games on the market since they stopped that replicates its gameplay (alot of the indie futuristic racers are more Wipeout in design rather than F-Zero with only one off hand I can think of that actually did try to be F-Zero) and like you mentioned, small mechanical changes, improvements to what's already there and new track ideas would already be good enough places to start with a sequel. I also just think if Nintendo isn't intent on making a new game, they could at least make the games themselves more widely accessible since your best bet for F-Zero X is through the old eshop channels (one of which is already shutdown and I can only forsee the Wii U's closing soon too) or emulation and F-Zero GX just straight up hasn't even had another release so unless you still own a backwards compatible Wii or a Gamecube, you can't even play those. The franchise in general is just really in a tough spot right now and I feel like Nintendo's only gonna shoot it in the foot going forward instead of trying to bring it back in some fashion and in the right light.

Don't mind me, just a 2 month late comment dropping here... Tbh, I've always been fascinated with the world of F-Zero just thanks to its music in Smash and obviously the walking badass meme that is the Captain of Falcons. Though I'd be lying if I didn't admit that my look into the series was a bit... rough. F-Zero X through Wii VC was my first game, and playing it with my brothers was bizarre to me. As kids that basically grew up on Mario Kart, this game was a shock to us lol. And while I've since given the series more chances by revisiting other games, it still never clicked with me personally. I like the wacky premise, the futuristic aesthetic, the world, and all... but I've always felt like F-Zero would be better if slightly taken in some new direction. That's... obviously not ideal to F-Zero fans of course, and trust me, I understand the pain of a series transforming into something very different. But I feel like for the characters it has and the world it has, it has some potential outside of racing alone. But that's just me. Great video!

It’s not much, but it’s all Mario kart has been doing ever since the ds, and that series is doing better than smash bros. (Much to my confusion) funnily enough that series was only made because they didn’t have the tech to make a multiplayer FZero game.

Part of what's great about the story is the fact that each of the missions are effectively a tutorial for deeper mechanics in one way or another. Mission 1: learn to drive the car period Mission 2: learn that saving your boost for the latter half of the race can be advantageous to winning Mission 3: Effectively an early story quiz and showing the effectiveness of the jump pads Mission 4: Learning how to effectively kill other racers Mission 5: Learning how to use the bumpers to maneuver side to side Mission 6: Learning to maintain your top speed by not bumping into other cars or walls Mission 7: in some ways the final exam taking all you've learned to the limit Missions 8 and 9 in some ways are more ways to take you to your limit, especially on the harder difficulties as theyve taught you everything you need to learn and now it just takes honing your skills. Also a nice little touch is after beating a mission on its base normal difficulty is that you need to buy your next ticket for the mission as you won't have enough with the amount you earned from just beating it on normal. So you have two choices. Either take your new learned skills into the grand prix to earn more tickets there or rebeat that same mission on hard or very hard proving true mastery.

I have an idea: F zero NX Campaign is extremely linear story driven with a focus on racing and segments of Arkham-style beat em up sections where you collect bounties. There can be a score attack more to see how long you can last and how long of a combo chain you can maintain But the main mode and multiplayer mode remains as the racing experience. They can bring track creator mode that was from the DD

Heck yeah, shotgun kiss is one of my favorites. I was glad they put in in smash. Also I agree with the sentiment. I also don't know what else I'd like in f zero except for bringing them up possibly to newer systems with some new features. They put a lot of passion into gx and it shows. That's what makes it more memorable for me. And that's why I feel a lot of people want it back. Sad to think though that it haz to possibly die because of it already reaching it's peak. That and the disappointment in sales and what not but yeah. Enjoyed the video! Have a nice day everyone.

Another game series that went out with a bang was Thunder Force. It was the best space shooter i ever played. Very underrated
