I genuinely enjoyed F Zero 99. And think it represents a second chance not an end. Nintendo favors low high mixes in terms of its investments. 2D Zelda / 3D Zelda. 2D Mario / 3D Mario. Remasters like Samus Returns acting as ptoof of concept for a new entry like Dread. 99 is a good indicator we will see more. Likely as either a 4K remaster of GX on switch 2 or an entirely new entry.

Speaking of 2D Top Down Zelda it’s been a whole decade since A Link Between Worlds on 3DS, not counting that Link’s Awakening Remake. And come to think of it I wish that got ported to Switch aside from Kid Icarus Uprising and besides Luigi’s Mansion 2, Nintendo is basically repeating the 3DS in its twilight years when it received a port of Luigi’s Mansion 1.

This. I Love the 3D games and still would 1000% prefer a new 3D game (or enhanced port of GX with online multiplayer) to 99, but 99 is the first 2D entry in the series I have actually been able to ENJOY. Because the quality of life tweaks make it MUCH more playable, and the human opponents make getting a 2-digit place number a lot less FRUSTRATING than it is when you get curbstomped by CPUs on normal mode. And as a freeware “event” game it’s introducing a LOT of people who’ve never tried the games to the world of F-Zero, and SOME OF THEM ARE GETTING HOOKED. 99 is a bit disappointing to me as a fan who KNOWS how much the series has to offer, but it’s a genuinely fun little game and when i see how fast the lobbies fill up and the sheet number of youtubers giving it a try “for the heck of it” and getting converted into real fans of the series I can’t help but think it was a smart tactic.

There a chance that an online 3d F-zero may look cool at first but any mistake could turn it into absolute torture. What I love about the original F-zero is that it's the easiest in the series, so it feels safer to put online into that, at least for right now.

@@orangeslash1667 The annoying difficulty was primarily in the singleplayer content and the fact that so many unlocks were gated BEHIND the most brutally difficult modes-if the online multiplayer, like the original’s couch multiplayer, is entirely for the fun of playing against humans, it’s not nearly as big of a dealbreaker if it has the occasional hiccup. I would also love to see a port of GX to switch add some accessibility features, an easier difficulty to story mode, and an alternative way to unlock a lot of the hidden AX content instead of “beat the hardest challenges in any racing game” or “find an extremely rare arcade cabinet and feed it quarters for weeks” but even without those QoL improvements, as long as any online shenanigans are quarantined from the unlock loop I really do think they could just release the decade old game with improved graphics and an online multiplayer mode and the larger switch install base would be enough to make it a moderate success.

Re: F-Zero 99. I agree that, as an F-Zero fan, Nintendo releasing another Mode 7 F-Zero game is so annoying. However, I think we F-Zero fans underestimate just how unpopular the series is, or even has been in the past. You even brought up that even though F-Zero GX was one of the most polished, smooth, and fun racing games ever made, it didn't even sell a million copies. The series essentially died by Nintendo's hand despite the really stellar console games. F-Zero 99 is Nintendo's attempt not to revive interest, but to create interest that was never there. That's why they didn't release it as a free-to-play, pay-to-win game; it's just a free game with Nintendo Online, which for many people is an incidental service for other games. The exposure to the franchise and fantastic gameplay is what matters. An aside to show my point: my coworker and I are both gamers, but he hadn't played F-Zero since the SNES. He hadn't even thought of the series until 99 was announced, and now he's playing 99 at least a couple times a day. By creating interest like described above, rather than just familiarity with the series, Nintendo is setting up the series for a successful Switch (or future console) installment of the series. People will be more likely to buy a new game after having recent positive recent experience with the free 99 game, rather than just think "Oh the game Captain Falcon from Smash is in". To be fair, I don't think we'd be jumping for joy at a battle-royale version of a 30 year old SNES game if Nintendo hadn't utterly dropped the ball with the series in the 2000's, but I do think 99 is the right move to bring the franchise back to at least SNES levels of popularity and grow the franchise into something more meaningful.

F-Zero 99 is legitimately one of my favorite games this year. F-Zero on SNES had no multiplayer, so being able to finally experience playing those classic tracks with other people is pretty surreal. It's also just as hard as F-Zero should be. I'm at Level 34 and have only achieved 1st Place one time.

I think F-Zero 99 is Nintendo testing the waters for an actual new game. Whether or not they'll actually follow through remains to be seen, but you have to admit this is infinitely better thought out than whatever it is they were trying to do with the anime back in the 2000s. That was an extremely expensive failure that was inevitable in retrospect, but F-Zero 99 meanwhile is a safe and easy experiment that seems to already be paying off. I've literally never played an F-Zero game before, but after playing F-Zero 99 I'm now more interested in seeing a new game come out than I am in seeing a new mario kart, and that's a series I grew up with. If there ever was a time to bring the series back, then now would be it because F-Zero 99 laid the groundwork for millions of potential new fans to pick up a new game.

F-Zero was dying because with every game it became more and more niche. They never succeeded in giving it broad appeal to people who didn't play F-Zero, so the player base never grew. If you really want F-Zero to revive, you have to be happy for new fans. F-Zero 99 did this. The franchise has new fans. It has set the groundwork for a mainline sequel to finally succeed.

@@kukukachu One of the reasons F-zero was important back then are the controls. If you look on the earlier Mario Kart karts, the drifting isn't that great. It didn't take until Double Dash for the controls to feel really good and even then F-zero GX was released before it. So Nintendo may not need 3d F-zero, because Mario Kart was evolved. The good news is that arcade racing games are still a thing in indie games.

I thought this video was amazing, super informative and really entertaining as always, but I'm a lot more optimistic following F-Zero 99 than you are. As someone who picked up GX way after it was released, and loves it, I actually think F-Zero 99 is amazing and something I'll continue to play for far longer than the 15 hours I've put into it thus far (as long as it remains active of course). I bet its hard to look at the marginally refreshed mechanics and art style after playing through all those GBA games for however many hours, but I think the simple, lower detail assets makes perfect sense with the pure chaos of 99 players which makes a huge difference. The fact is, this game is probably going to be the most successful path forward for a few reasons. A fully priced remaster of GX would definitely sell better on Switch than the original, but probably not enough to justify pouring more resources into the series. Nintendo would also have to be straight up insane to make a brand new game right now that is stuck between trying to recapture the essence of the originals while introducing some new modern gimmick; we saw how that worked out for Star Fox, and the Switch era Nintendo is very different than the Nintendo of F-Zero's heyday. And finally, making this game basically free reduces the barrier of entry to almost zero (lol). Instead of having to gauge interest in the series (of which there is very little today), Nintendo is instead building interest by making it easier to play than ever before, and there are more brand new players than EVER before. Finally these Mario Kart kids can stop making fun of fans for continuing to ask for more F-Zero because they can play this game for themselves and realize it's fun as fuck. It's uncertain how long that will last and the game will of course be shut down, but it's honestly way more ideal to receive this first than having another brand new game completely flop, sealing its fate once again. Now, in 5 or so years if a new game has yet to materialize, your rant will be 100% justified.

​@@HyperChargeit's already been data mined that there's more content in the game (if the menus greying out the Queen and King cups wasn't obvious already.) Supposedly there's code for tracks named the same as the satellaview games, so they might be bringing that dead content back too or just making new tracks with the same names. The way to look at this game is that it's exactly the thing you wished they would've done. Instead of doing some shitty marketing strategy that reaches nobody and killing the series, they're releasing a fun new free game that should capture WAY more fans and build up a customer base for them to make a proper sequel in time.

Excellently put. This game is not an end product, it's a jumping pad. Now that the Switch is on its final year, sure, it's frustrating to have seen a proper F-Zero game skip 2 generations of home consoles, but should 99 succeed to attract a massive fanbase (and given the amount of youtube vids and youtube shorts that are popping up on my feed, I'd argue mission accomplished), I'm hopeful for the near future of the franchise for Nintendo's next console. Maybe a launch title, like for the SNES ?

another fun fact about f zero x ive noticed certain pilots have lore accurate rivalries that affect gameplay in a minor way for example if you are using captain falcon for some reason and mostly in the first track black bull and blood falcon are always directly on your bumper or infront of you no matter how fast you go and its ALWAYS them. i didnt memorize all the rivalries but its a small detail that will go unnoticed because youre worried about rubber banding instead of whos rubber banding

There is a rumor from the same source that said the TTYD remake was real that said that we are getting a remake of F-Zero GX. Normally I wouldn't believe that, but the fact that Nintendo has been on a crazy remaster/remake spree, the fact that the TTYD rumor was true, and the fact that we got F-Zero 99 as a game that is very accessible for newcomers while also maintaining the classic intensity the series is known for really gives me the impression that a remake isn't too far off. But I would take that with a grain of salt even after all of that. This is F-Zero after all.

Big F-Zero fan here, this is a great video and I like how you really highlighted in detail how quickly after GX's release the franchise was killed off by the unholy trifecta of the Anime, GP Legend, and Climax, as I think that this is something that isn't really understood by most people. To put it in perspective, the last mainline F-Zero game came out before I was even born. F-Zero 99 became my first real taste of the series, and I'm absolutely hooked. Now here I am, watching banger retrospective videos like this one. If there's a time for Nintendo to revive F-Zero, it's now. There's a whole new generation of gamers that I'm sure would love to play a game with Captain Falcon in it. Any of Nintendo's previous concerns about consumer burnout or a lack of innovation are now irrelevant due to the stupid period of time between releases. I'm hopeful F-Zero 99 performs to the standard Nintendo was expecting, this series more than deserves another shot.

I should note that while F-Zero 99 is deliberately emulating the visual style of Mode 7 from the original F-Zero, it is not Mode 7 (or Mode 2 from the GBA games). Its just 3D with sprite cars and flat tracks. Similar to Mario Kart 64, except that game had fully 3D tracks. As for why they made F-Zero 99 instead of a proper sequel to GX, there are a few clear reasons. 1. None of the later F-Zero games outsold the SNES original. The original game nearly sold 3 million copies. Only F-Zero X and Maximum Velocity even hit the million milestone and of course you went over the failure of the anime F-Zero games. Someone on GX's dev team claims it sold 1.5 million, but Nintendo themselves have never put GX in its million milestone club so that claim is suspect. At the end of the day, F-Zero never reached the sales heights of the SNES game. And that can't be completely blamed on the N64 and Gamecube not being as successful as the SNES. After all, Metroid Prime beat out Super Metroid and Star Fox 64 beat out SNES Star Fox. Yet, no F-Zero game has outsold SNES F-Zero. 2. Mario Kart's enduring success. As Nintendo's other racer, they would note how that franchise has always been successful no matter the console. Thus, the fading of F-Zero would make Mario Kart stand out more, leading to the franchise constantly jacking any fledgling ideas that could've been used for an F-Zero game. Even to the point of getting the 2 main tracks of the franchise! Nintendo is incompetent at this sort of thing. If they had seen the value Online play in the Gamecube era, games like GX would've definitely have been more successful. But it took years after F-Zero's death for them to finally start taking online seriously. Though even now, they still aren't great. Anyway, I don't play 99 because I want to convince Nintendo to make a new proper game. I play it because its fun. They probably are using it as some sort of test of F-Zero intereest before commiting to a multi-year game development project. And IMO, there is some merit to it. A lot more people are into F-Zero now that probably wouldn't be if all we got was a GX port.

In the end though, it was clearly another sales decline from the previous F-Zero games. I know Shigeru Miyamoto voiced how unhappy he was about the Gamecube collab games (Star Fox with Namco and F-Zero with Sega) not meeting whatever expectations they had.

It didn't take until Double Dash for the controls to feel really good and even then F-zero GX was released before it. So Nintendo may not need 3d F-zero, because Mario Kart was evolved. The good news is that arcade racing games are still a thing in indie games.

You're incorrect about Maximum Velocity's controls. While some machines benefit more from Blast Turns that than others(Wind Walker and Falcon mk II), the most efficient way to negotiate those corners is through drifting by going into the turn while simultaneously counter steering with the shoulder buttons. You then you use the Blast Turns, afterwards, to maintain control.

41:20 GP Legend and Climax had Blast Turns. One of the in-game tutorials for Climax explicitly states how to do blast turns, and you're expected to use them for some of the harder courses (more so in Climax, but GP Legend had some too). Watch gameplay videos of the pros playing those games and you'll see them using Blast Turns for the Expert and Master level cups.

Certain nuances of your takes I don't agree with and the humor isn't my cup of tea, but I overall agree that the F-Zero series is packed with masterpiece games. Regarding F-Zero 99, I'm not nearly as cynical about it just because it's a "low effort" game for Nintendo to make. For one, I can't blame them for making a "low effort" game given the sales of the series. It doesn't matter how good or critically acclaimed they are, a series needs sales to live. Releasing a free new game will get old fans excited again and get new players on board with the series. It's the most realistic thing fans could ask for and it's genuinely just fun. Ridiculously fun. I honestly think Nintendo should hire RGG Studio to make a spinoff title based on the lore established. It'd be pretty sweet going around as captain falcon and beating up thugs, and engaging in a racing minigame to chase fugitives before fighting them hand to hand. It's quite ambitious, but given the series' lore it's fitting. And a racing game like GX, with the chaoticness of 99 would be brilliant, you could also race around in your modified machines with your custom drawn livery - in due time someone's going to use their absurdly good pixel art skills and cover their machines in lewd faces. Also, you *can* blast turn in GP Legend, it's essentially the only way to control C grip or lower vehicles, or heavy behemoths like Black Bull. Mastering blast turning will show you how OP Mighty Typhoon is in this game - it has a rather high natural speed, it is very light and therefore can turn easily, and it has an A rated boost which means you will outrun anyone, the D rated grip is its only flaw but blast turning is how you mitigate it.

Great vid! A couple of points: There actually was a super-esoteric game mechanic in GX that, if you could master it (I couldn't), made the game's brain-melting AI difficulty just evaporate. The momentum throttle (and alternately, "snaking"). Now, the entire reason for those existing is because AV used the same momentum-based physics engine for GX that they used for Super Monkey Ball, which introduced its own set of particular physics rules for how you lost speed after hitting a booster pad (put simply, there was a reason you could just never seem to keep up with the AI machines on harder difficulties). For that reason alone, I remain more partial to X over GX all these years later. Hands down I had a lot more fun with X, despite beating all of GX on Master and unlocking *A FEW* of the AX rewards through Story mode. Oh yeah, on that note...I had an AX cabinet at a local fun park arcade not far from my house. Annnnnd some jerk screwed a piece of plexi OVER the card slot! As for Miyamoto's relationship with the franchise in general, video I watched some time ago on the development of the original F-Zero and then Super Mario Kart led me to realize that F-Zero has always just been a "tech demo" IP for him. MarioKart has always been his baby, the "favored child" if you will. F-Zero was the technical proving ground, and that explained to some degree why Miyamoto countered persistent interest in the franchise with that lame excuse: what could we do differently? (My personal answer to that aside from the obvious online play, is make F-Zero a little more like Gran Turismo / Forza in that you have an "career mode" where you can create your own racer and build up points, acquiring parts to build new and better machines along the way-similar to what's already been done in RedOut 2.) To that end, with so many GCN titles getting Switch remasters, I'm hopeful for the possibility of a legit GX remaster on Switch, and/or a true successor game on "Switch 2." Now even if we never get that, some indy devs have taken up the mantle to create games that embody the spirit of X and GX as much as they dare. But, especially after playing 99, I definitely want to see new games happen in *that* world that Nintendo built, and has ignored for far too long. Sadly, while they may be enjoyable (even moreso than GX and even X), no indy game will probably ever fulfill that.

He almost Ruined Star Fox by fucking with Rareware’s Dinosaur planet and forced them to make an impossible Deadline while they were being bought by Microsoft! I enjoy Mario Kart a lot, but once you get into 1st and have an item held behind you, you basically can't lose unless you get blue shell'd. The series sort of has this weird balance where since you get less powerful items out in front, the game is much easier for players in 1st than it would be in the lower positions dealing with stars and bullet bills and what not. Also, I just want them to make Mario Kart 9 already. I'm getting real sick of playing Mario Kart 8 for like over a decade straight.

I remember being OBSESSED with F-Zero back then and playing on these cabinets, I never got a chance to bring my memory card and regret it. I did however beat most of the story mode levels except the last one, so only up to eight-and rage quitting like a 5yr boy who got his ass handed to him on Goldeneye when playing versus his older brother- I never did beat it and long sold the game;( I was close to greatness, but I will be buying it again hopefully soon🤞🏽

This video appeared on my recommended to my surprise (probably after searching for the F-Zero GP legends OST). My first (and only) experience with F-Zero was F-Zero GP Legends, being 1 out of 4 GBA games I got with my very own first console, the GBA SP. (If anyone asks, the other 3 games were Super Mario 3, Simpson's Road Rage (which used an "input code" as checkpoint system but it honestly sucked) and Need for Speed Underground 2 (which was nice but the minigames were literally impossible so I could never 100% the game)). Seeing this video showed me that there was an anime about GP Legend after all these years so I am kinda dumbstruck about that discovery. And I also kinda want to see it now (okay nvm its not even possible unless its subtitled, if thst even exists). The fact that the most we've gotten since 2004 is F-Zero 99 is almost like a kick in the nuts despite the fun multiplayer, but given how gaming has become much more mainstream and adopted worldwide I suppose if they made an honest to God sequel it would at least wake up the curiosity of people watching. And I am sure as hell would dust off my Switch to buy it (which I only remember exists every time I travel, which is twice a year for like a month in total).

I actually 100% completed GX earlier this year. And by that i mean i beat the story mode on very hard, beat every grand prix on master mode, unlocked every character, obtained every character's secret cutscene movie (you unlock one by beating any grand prix on master mode with a specific character), and beat every time trial staff ghost. I also unlocked all of the available AX content that is in the game. Did it take a long time? Yes. Was it hard? Yes. Am I good at the game? Yes. Am i completely insane? Yes. Would I do it all over again? Absolutely. GX is a total masterpiece, i love every single thing about it. The game is hard as balls, but once you understand the physics and how to exploit them to your advantage, NOTHING comes close to replicating the GX experience. Doing literally anything successfully in the game feels amazing. I am a massive racing game fan, I've played so many of them over the years, and GX has stuck with me like nothing else ever has. I decided to 100% complete the game out of sheer love for it. If Nintendo ever makes another one, I desperately hope they follow what GX did. Also, a local convention actually had an F zero AX cabinet there to play a few years ago. I did a few races and my god, AX is insanely fucking fun. The steering wheel makes the races feel way more intense. I'd love to try our those "virtual reality" cockpits.

Finally after watching your retrospective, all I can say is: good research but, what an arrogant and sad person you are as a fan. You make good points and info which I'm glad to hear, I had a good time, even acknowledging obscure (or just not talked enough) stuff. But oh my god, the bitterness and holier-than-thou attitude is a breaker to this video, even the constant swearing like an AVGN makes it hard to take your retrospective as a sincere-professional take (you would make a great "eltingville club" character lol).
