At some point, you should really start accepting that maybe this thing isn't going to get better, and that you have no reason to place your confidence in it when it hasn't given you any reason to for the last half-decade. AC Unity is the pinnacle of assassins creed games, sure it had its rough release, but it has aged into the ultimate fantasy of being an assassin. Beautiful, lived in, engaging, recognizable city. Great free running mechanics. Solid combat that could and should have improved with the following games rather than being derailed in syndicate. The bugs of that game is the catalyst that caused the downfall of AC into rpg games. The spirit of unity needs to be revived and built upon.

EDIT: Apparently the story of Ubisoft removing Altair’s crossbow because it was historically inaccurate in AC1 is a myth, HOWEVER, the fact that all the earlier games really made the setting, character, and weapons cohesive & grounded, while ALSO working within a science fiction world/premise, were top notch and immserive! Cut to RPCreed, where the magical powers and mythology (ex: Minotaur) felt like the backbone of the AC universe. Ubi should just make Fenyx: Immortal Rising sequels because that’s clearly what they wanna do… I also wanna point out that AC needs to fix their UI. It’s actually something I think is incredibly important in games, ESPECIALLY AC. You are supposed to be in the Animus, a sci fi machine, so it’s supposed to look futuristic and sleek. However, since Odyssey, the devs seem to forgotten this fact, and instead created a generic fantasy layout. ADDENDUM: I do know you can play without UI, my point is that the actual design of the "in game animus" fell to the wayside in lieu of something you'd find in most open world RPGs.
@adamibnal-alam89172 жыл бұрын
That's a myth, they cut the crossbow because it was unbalanced and they found out in testing that it was overused to roll over the enemie, exactly like it is used in AC Brotherhood. Crossbows existed since at least the 11th century. I do agree with the UI - that you should be able to play without like in AC1.
@Leon_SKennnedy2 жыл бұрын
The crossbow story is bs, the UI though? It feels like a massive downgrade from the older games, I loved that Unity allowed you to simply press and hold a button at anytime to just immerse yourself in the world
@adamibnal-alam89172 жыл бұрын
@N7Andy 1. If you set a waypoint that appears on screen to direct you then you've ipso facto been using part of the HUD. 2. I was referring exclusively to the first Assassin's Creed game in which all the information you need to complete the missions, traverse the environments and assassinate your target are present in the game assets and enables you to make a complete run without the HUD. This is rendered impossible with AC2 because the missions started at specific coordinates in the game-world and so without the mini-map minimally you cannot complete the game - unless you pop the map every 20 meters but that's just unplayable.
@adamibnal-alam89172 жыл бұрын
@N7Andy 1. I think the main reason you can complete AC1 without the HUD is found in the level design and not so much with the scale of the game. All combined, the cites of Jerusalem, Acre and Damas most likely make 75% of Venice and Florence. But the level design made it so you'd explore the cities one district at the time by having all the investigations concentrated in one. This could've easily been replicated in later games by dividing Florence and making that you go step by step. It is again the level design that is then more linear based like a Rockstar game that creates the necessity of fixed waypoints. In this, I agree with you conclusion that the recent AC games are simply not designed to be played without the HUD - and this is very annoying considering how ugly and blend they are. 2. I agree that a single way point on screen is much better than a thousand useless information. I usually only keep the mini-map on my Ezio runs because that's the only relevant thing. 3. I don't want to be an ass but the flags in AC1 were meant as a joke by the developers, you were never really supposed to go after them since they don't provide anything. Plus, it's not really an argument to use the completionists' perspective since the games are not intented for that audience or structured around the objective of collecting everything on the map.

I think the future looks extremely grim. First previews of Skull and Bones look pretty bad, a number high profile titles have just been postponed or cancelled. Meanwhile the rest of the industry is consolidating and aggressively monetized f2p and live services games continue to be cash cows. The limits of what players are willing to endure are shifting rapidly. Ubisoft has been declining for years and if they want to survive they need to improve their financials quickly. That means predatory monetization and no risky projects. They simply don't have the resources anymore to have thousands of people work on an ambitious project for the better part of a decade. They may be able to create some passible maybe even decent AC games, but I wouldn't expect anythinggroundbreaking.

Every single entry that came out until Syndicate felt really engaging with it’s side content. I’m playing through Unity again and i find myself exploring and completing side missions 80% of the time. As for Valhalla, i can only focus on the story and side content feels useless to me, maybe because of the often non-existent rewards in comparison to older games. We want a game for the fans. We want Assassin’s Creed’s identity back. If that comes in the form of a live-service game, so be it, as long as it stays true to what we grew to love. ERRATUM: The engine is the same (AnvilNExt 2.0) from Unity through Valhalla, so the issue is more to be found with the fact that Rift is most likely being based off Valhalla instead of Unity and thus will the suffer the same *game design* limitations. My concern at this point lies with the game -engine- design/level design and its limitations. The physics and the animation of the later games feels goofy and made for large (empty) maps and a RPG style combat system. It does not offer the detail and the precision the precedent Anvil engines provided, which peaked with AC Unity. The problem being that most of the classical AC gameplay and level design focuses on a precise set of movements which enabled a polished free-running with lots of obstacles and a combat system that flowed and was enemy based instead of hit-box based. The stealth gameplay in Origins to Valhalla is thus highly limited because the NPCs animation and movements are way to basic and so inhibit strong and immersive social blending. It thus resort to the most boring and basic stealth mechanics which are crouching and bushes... which feels extremely poor. To me AC Rift might fail because it is going to be attempting to return to a previous style of gameplay but with the wrong tools. The -engine- game design is not built for classical AC to it will overall feel goofy. Too bad because it was long due they return to the based middle-eastern city setting. For the live-service, I think Jim Sterling makes a perfect argument against it which is that the players' time is limited and cannot engage in various live-service XXX hours lenghty eXpErIeNcEs. They most likely will stick to one and keep with it so you find yourself with a divided market that is siphoned in one live-service and litteraly does not have time for the others. It's also a model which enables game producers to break down a single product into various pieces to make you pay more that you would have had for a single game, i.e. the Hitman series. So overall, f*ck live-service.

As much as I admire your optimism, I just cannot see it. AC has been on a downward curve since 2013. Despite the recent Unity revisionism and not withstanding the bugs, I remember before release the return to the single city being seen as step back in ambition after Black Flag. Plus Unity totally wasted the French revolution setting with the romance/revenge plot. E.g. there could have been a story where the assassins actually win over the Templar controlled monarchy at the beginning of the game and then we have a civil war story line of different assassin factions trying to build a new France without success, with one faction taking 'everything is permitted' to its logical conclusion in the Terror, to cleanse France of hundreds of years of Templar rule. This would have built on the themes of 3 and Black Flag and explained the condition of the modern brotherhood. The game would have ended with an assassin helping Napoleon come to power to end the chaos, so setting up the sequels. That's just my hobby horse of an alternative franchise direction though. Like many others I played the Witcher 3 between Unity and Syndicate, and on playing Syndicate felt that the whole AC formula was stale and behind the times in 2015. The Wild Hunt raised the bar massively in every respect, even Origins the most obvious Witcher clone was unable to compete with the Wild Hunt's writing. Nevertheless the transition to RPG in Origins felt like a shot in the arm in 2017. To me Origins is the best of the new style games, it is the only one I have replayed. However in retrospect this may have been because of the strength and novelty of the Egyptian setting. Also Origins is where the micro transactions really started in force. Odyssey is simply not on AC game, as an RPG in a fantasy version of Ancient Greece its perfectly enjoyable, but I have played it for over 300 hours and remember little of the narrative and characters, which is probably concerning. Valhalla was initially an improvement on Odyssey, it felt more grounded, but again the potential is wasted. This is mainly through laziness and poor quality writing, where there is a superficially impressive and interesting premise that is again and again not followed through. E.g. it is fun and interesting to explore the Hidden One bureaus, until you realise Eivor has no idea what he is doing and cannot read the scrolls. This could have been solved by a 30 second debrief conversation back at your settlement after each tomb, building up to Eivor becoming an assassin, but no. There are lots of similar examples throughout the game, ending up with a bloated and unsatisfying mess. The decline in quality and substance between Revelations, Black Flag, Origins and Valhalla is shocking, particular as this is all meant to be produced by the same team. The Valhalla year 1 and 2 content show us what a live service AC will be, endless filler mediocre content. As Valhalla has been very successful for Ubisoft, I expect future games to follow this pattern. I have seen the rumors for an Aztec game and the setting has massive potential. Due to the geographic isolation you could assassin and templar equivalents developing in a totally different way to their Eurasian counterparts, with similar yet distinct ideas. You could have a clash between the Aztec assassins and the European brotherhood. You could have Aztec assassins and templars uniting against the Spanish. You could have an Aztec empire ruled by Isu descendants, as an wannabe Isu state from before the Catastrophe, hence the constant war with and human sacrifice of other peoples. The setting is exotic enough to Western audiences to have relatively free rein in including the mythological elements without breaking immersion. Do I think Ubisoft is competent to give us anything like this or better? No. There will be a gorgeous setting filled with endless, dull repetitive content all to make the real money off micro transactions. When you think about the heights the franchise has hit, this is all very sad.
@Mickey23kswiss2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree! It’s one thing to be optimistic but another thing entirely to be optimistic after repeated meaningless attempts from Ubisoft. The idea of "time jumping assassin" in Infinity worries me a lot. Having one created and playable isn't bad but we should be able to do it after we finish main story of any given "experience". None of this RUN IN A STRAIGHT LINE and "We aren't Assassins, we're Warrior's Creed" nonsense. I love playing the classics but I don't want to play the old school games all the time. We'll get RPGs, action-adventure games, whatever the hell Hexe is, maybe we'll get telltale-style games. Instead of it being a single AC game with expansions that all use the same combat, stealth, and parkour systems.

I'd be stoked to see them return to a more classic AC experience. Bring back the focus on history and the Assassin vs Templar conflict, the stealth, etc. I don't mind a little bit of magic/sci fi but only if it ties into the Isu and Pieces of Eden stuff. I really hope they don't continue with the constant mythology stuff, it's just not what AC was supposed to be about. Too many times in Valhalla I found myself fighting the blue-skinned Jotuns thinking 'I can't believe this is an AC game'.

There was a focus on history you dafty. (in Odyssey and origins anyway) Odyssey's world is so fucking historically accurate. I've researched ancient Greece to death and seeing the city of Athens in the game is amazing. Especially the city layout. It's not just the world in Odyssey that is amazing, The armour as well. (excluding the helix store armour) I think the same about origins as well but Valhalla on the other hand. Yeah Valhalla is not that accurate.

The looter rpg they have been delivering is just not compelling. At least not for me, a long term fan. I understand that you need filled in between. That’s the point of side missions. Luke, I love your new series about "tried again" games, and since you're a specialist with Ubisoft, there is one game that almost none of the bigtime channels like yours have talked much about, and it has a special mode that was released a month or so after its release that Ubisoft really hit out of the park. That would be Far Cry Primal and the "Survival mode w/ pet permadeath" setting. They found a great balance of intuitiveness and immersion with their typical Far Cry interface/system with this Survival Mode, and it's such a shame it wasn't built upon. If you want to get a peek at it, there's a video on KZbin called Survival Mode Changes Everything FC: Primal -- definitely worth a look for the series if you need some ideas.

Optimism for Ubisoft is completely misguided. Their actions and statements they have made over the last few years, shows the company is clearly focused on monetization and have no respect for their fans and customer base. They have abandoned franchises with large fan bases (Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, etc.) and have retooled existing franchises like Assassin's Creed into different games than what made them popular in the first place. Save your money and give it to game developers that create good affordable games who listen to their customers and treat them with respect. Also, your attitude to live services is wrong. If you accept it and give them your money for their BS then of course they will continue to do so. Stop rewarding sanctimonious mediocrity with your money and then the incentive will be there for them not to do it.

Honestly all the really need to do is remake the first saga of the series with “modern graphics” and not the trash modern engine that their using for the newer games like how you go mocap in AC unity too ac Valhalla Ac Valhalla looks like ps3 GTA 5 😭😭💀 And make it one full long game, even if it’s 300 hours people will play it cuz they love. Classic AC And call it the “Desmond’s legacy” And it would cover Desmond’s time on “The Farm “ during his childhood all the way to him dying in Ac3 Playing the complete full lives of Altair, Ezio , Conor. Progress wise it would be great cuz you literally progress as a child to mentor level Assassin throughout his life/ the game gaining abilities to use during modern segments And like in the story how Desmond obtains thru his use of the animus. They can even makeup some modern day missions for some “live service” that put Desmond in different scenarios to “test him” and maybe even add a multiplayer aspect to it where he’s getting help from other assassins trainee And funny enough this game could tie into the ending of Valhalla where The modern day girl (lol forgot her name 🤣😭) and Desmond said they’re gonna change the timeline thru the ISU tree machine.

The problems arose immeadiately when someone at Ubisoft had the idea that "mytholody = Isu". That simple idea sounds pretty cool, but the problem is that it allows Ubisoft to be lazy and creatively bankcrupt. Mythology is cool. It's not cool if you have that mythology looking like Godfall a.k.a. Animus artstyle. But yeah... I don't trust Ubisoft anymore, nor the industry. This new AC Infinity just sounds like all the core design decisions are made based on monetization.

It’s frustrating to know that the assassins creed premise, up until odyssey (which I loved really but still it’s a clear departure) could really be so so so good. Imagine the grounded nessm of Kingdom Come Deliverance with that games fantastically written and voiced non generic main cast of characters with the drama of the clandestine aspects of pre origins AC games, and a more complex and very thought-out stealth system coupled with an assassination aspect that would make Hitman fans very happy with free running that is an improved version of Unity’s. Just do that! Take your hundreds of talented artists and writers and programmers, And all your resources and make something

The moment they switched to open world, they just became more of the bunch. And I like those 3 open world games, but it's just not the same. We need that AC1-Syndicate design again
@RossG992 жыл бұрын
Stop the cap bro it’s over, AC died a long loooong time ago. I would argue it died with Desmond and will die on that hill. Black Flag may be a fan favourite and Unity has its supporters after the patches but honestly when Desmond died we saw the storyline completely derailed. The reason the original trilogy (plus brotherhood and revelations) was so good was the intertwining story that tied characters, events and motivations together. It was all for a purpose. That purpose died with Desmond and now the modern day is a complete and utter fucking joke.
@RossG992 жыл бұрын
And I’d like to add that even if they try and go back now, I fear the damage is done. How do you back to a grounded story when a game or two ago I was leaping 300 metres off the ground and landing it no problem because I unlocked a skill which means I literally take no fall damage. Granted, the hay bales wouldn’t either but at least there was an attempt at realism there. It went from serious to goofy, from assassinating targets and members of royal families to spam attacking monsters with my axe.

This seems like a good idea, there are plenty of interesting concepts for assassin's set in different places/times that can't be used because of commitment required to make a full game. I had an idea for AC set in ancient Egypt years before and it came true, but my idea for a game set in January uprising Poland (mentioned in AC3) did not, this allows to make these ideas come true. They tried something similar with the 2d AC games. Less commitment to execute the concept but the cost of one dimension was too high.

I hate for infinity to just be a game that tips its toe in several different aesthetics, time settings and cultures without committing or excelling at any particular one. If it doesn't offer a satisfactory experience in a given setting, it might contaminate the well, leave a bad taste in the audience's mouth and ruin the likelihood of having another AC game that fully explores that specific setting in the future. I'd rather take a master of one thing than a jack of all trades.
