Bioshock infinite will always have a special place in my heart. The first game I vividly remember being extremely hype for back in 2013 when I was 11. Man I remember that midnight release. Also, that loading screen music???? So good. It's amazing for falling asleep to on the train. I would know💀💀 excuse the specific anecdote

When you can consider it is over 10 years since it was released yet your AI companion in the game is still way smarter than any AAA game since lol. I remember how stunned I was that she was always looking out for you tossing you ammo etc. Also just how they handled when she was outside for the first time how innocently she viewed the world like that beach scene etc. it was incredible story telling even just with the way they handled the visual story telling.

"managing creative types" is not even a top 100 problem right now in the video game industry. this video comes off kinda tone def. the problem in the industry is largely the exact opposite. devs are not given the time and support to make the game being promised, and in order to meet deadlines we end up with straight up broken recycled ass games. i would much rather wait 10 years for 1 truly memorable game than play the same Ubisoft, EA, or Activision crap every year. just wait for the game to be done when its ready.

This! ☝️ but unfortunately companies want to go as big as possible (because executives still equate that to easy short terms profits, given they only look at GTA and COD as examples) and so also hire huge teams. With big investment comes short deadlines but at the same time bloated requests and all ends up falling on the teams that actually have to deliver - and crunch ensues over and over. For me nothing beats small teams, small sustainable projects. But big investment cares not for sustainable long term growth.

It saddens me that people don't realize that Bioshock Infinite was made exactly in the same process the original Bioshock went through. If you see the Pitch Deck that Take Two signed on, and the technical demo of Bioshock, you'll find that its not the Bioshock we got. It was a more dense System Shock 3-esque approach, with stealth and more Im Sims elements. But, they opted for a streamlined fps in order to convey the themes of illusion of choice. Its a masterclass in game development, and I'm so sorry that people felt let down by Ken Levin (Ken quiting AAA by extension) but they were paid to do their job... there was no harassment, there was no insulting, the game came out great, but there was a power struggle between Ken and the Bioshock 2 director that created a gap of trust between studio and director. So he called it quits, and people still complain. He said himself he didn't want to make Bioshock because he knew the amount of work and stress it would be, and the same employees pushed to make it happen. Same employees that later would be "why isn't this faster? why are we throwing away work that we got paid to do?" It all feels so entitled, but ok.

The song on the Judas trailer is called "Leave Her, Johnny." "Her" wasn't a woman but a reference to a ship. It was based on an old song sailors would sing when they were ready to reach land. They'd sing about all the crap they'd have to put up with and what was wrong with the ship. Meaning: stuff that needed to be fixed.

Ken Levine gave a talk at GDC in 2014 that expanded on his "narrative Legos" vision (at the time) [available on GameSpot's KZbin channel] The ideas seemed pretty concrete and appealed to me as GM in the process of creating my own setting. Applying ideas to create a product is a challenge I don't envy. Blank canvases can be really scary 😳

It's amazing how well put together Infinite is for a game that is essentially a mess of six-seven different iterations of Infinite, smashed together at the last minute because the company was losing money and needed to get the game out. I attribute this to Rod Fergusson from Gears of War fame. He was well known in the industry as a "closer" and in the last six-seven months of development. He stitched up the game to be as true as he could to Ken Levine's vision. Because apparently he was one of the only ones who could "speak Ken". He was able understand what Ken wanted and worked with him to achieve that. Ofcourse it wasn't all roses. In following years, it's obvious in interviews that Infinite is a bit of a sore subject for Levine to talk about because he there is stil a lot of the finished game that he isn't happy with. Personally I think Infinite falls apart around the half way point, around "Finkton". Before that point I thought it was brilliant. I love ending too. But that middle part. Since I followed Infinite from it's initial reveal, I could see that everything from Finkton to Comstock House was such a massive stitch up where they take a lot of creative short cuts to speed through the story. But overall it's my favourite Bioshock game aswell.

Hi Luke, the main reason Bioshock Infinite was changed so drastically compared to the original demo was that the game they wanted to make then ended up not fitting into the hardware or memory constraints of consoles. The game was in development based on expected specs of the machines which turned out to be inaccurate. The complexity of Elizabeth AI alone drastically altered how much else they could have on screen at any given time. The end result is still brilliant but it was simply that they knew they would sell the most copies on console compared to PC at that time so it was altered entirely to suit the consoles and PC became an afterthought other than enhanced graphics. There was also meant to be far more abilities than the rather simple ones in the final game. In alot of ways it reminds me of Alan Wake compared to the original PC demo. That game and Infinite I still hold on high regard but I would have still loved to play the alternative versions of both with all that complexity all the same. I think the DLC of Infinite was just as brilliant if not better than the main game overall though as it really made you think which is missing from modern AAA games nowadays for the most part.

Well I do agree that gameplay wise it was super linear & the options of combat the first 2 bioshock games were stripped out.Exploration was there a little but hugely stripped back as well.Still love infinite just go in expecting very little exploration & Combat with very few options compared to previous games in the series.

Deathloop was very much a disappointment for me and as you say was down to the execution/implementation. Its a shame as they showed that the concept worked in the 'Mooncrash' dlc for Prey, but in that case it wasn't a full length game, that allowed the implementation to be more focused and benefit from the players knowledge gained from playing the main game.

There are two kinds of nightmare bosses like Levine in the creative industry: type one are talentless hacks that reached their position via charisma or nepotism, and type two are talented creatives who work well by themselves or on very small teams. Levine seems like a type two: lacks individual vision, likes to micromanage, etc. Put on a small team, he'd probably thrive, but leading a big group? Everyone's going to walk on eggshells during meetings because they all realize that this guy is just throwing ideas at the wall until one sticks better than the others.
@tyronecriss23
@tyronecriss23 8 ай бұрын
You know, creating and writing is a very nuanced endeavor. Sometimes you have to throw shit at the wall and see what sticks, you have to do things that don’t make sense to others and really have faith in the unknown. It’s really hard to do that when you have a huge team. Everything has to be understood and explained. There is no trust for what you can’t not imagine. I get where you are coming from and I don’t even really know this dude or his work. But this statement feels a bit confined to me without understanding the nuance of creating big projects.

sure, it's a little more nuanced than what I said, but throwing shit at the wall only works for so long, and only in the very formative stages of a project. If you're doing that still a couple years after you started? With huge sections of the project?? Something has gone horribly wrong, and most of the time that comes from the top of the team.
@rigs9801
@rigs9801 8 ай бұрын
People like Levine need to be managed - they need a small-team dynamic with a couple of people around them who can filter the dumbass shit from the good. But in my experience, they don't like that, at least once they realize that's what is being done to them. It makes them realize no one actually has any faith in their capabilities as a leader. They're better off, like I said, on small teams, or working on their own.
@tyronecriss23
@tyronecriss23 8 ай бұрын
@@rigs9801 I agree with you. I made my comment before finishing the video and seeing his whole process of things. I still agree with what I said, but you are correct as well. You can’t throw shit at the wall for 4 years and not have a playable development build. As well, he seems to be doing the same with this new game. I agree with Luke too, you need someone to put the creatives on rails at a point. Especially in bigger projects.

I think bioshock infinite is solid but maybe the technology really wasn’t there yet for the game and they should have waited for the ps4 and Xbox one to release. They had a lot of really cool ideas but didn’t pan out as well as they could have. Nonetheless it’s still a very enjoyable game for me and was my first bioshock experience. I’m glad he’s taken his time with Judas and didn’t try to rush another game for the ps4 and xone generation and is able to successfully accomplish all the goals that he wants for Judas. I think a lot of people really focus on infinites Elizabeth plot a bit too much there’s a lot of really great world building and subtle story telling about Comstock and the world he built and the whole revolution thing. Hopefully that’s something they bring w Judas as well.
@nickhard7615
@nickhard7615 8 ай бұрын
A combination of that and the fact that the game feels more like a Call of Duty campaign with super powers and bullet sponge enemies. There's just so much less to Infinite from an immersion and gameplay point of view compared to 1 & 2. 1 & 2. You can only have 2 weapons now, but like every single level had like different sets of weapons, so if, for example, you wanted to max out the Hand Canon, good luck finding one and keeping it supplied (especially when you get to the Lady Comstock fight) while also ignoring the other weapons bc you're more than likely gonna run out of ammo and that Hand Canon you invested in at the beginning how has to be replaced by a repeater that you never invested in for a decent portion of the rest of the game. I also so throughly explore Rapture, every playthrough, I always want to see all of the stores, I wanted to see all of the restaurants, the criminal hideouts, everything. Infinite to me just feels like a sprint from one shooting gallery to the next and no matter how many times I run through it with the specific intent of taking in as much of Columbia as I possibly could, just like I could with Rapture, I just can't. Passed the beginning parts, like maybe up to the point you meet the "give me a soldier's death" guy, the game is honestly just kind of a total blur up until you get drowned at the end. I could go on and on about this game, but yeah. It's not terrible though, it's just "ight." I really wonder what happened to that game that during those earlier years had me constantly re-watching the reveal trailers and early gameplay demos

I don't see Judas coming out in 2024 and Take Two Interactive who owns both Cloud Chamber and Ghost Story are not going to release two BioShock or BioShock-like games in the same year, so the next BioShock is a late 2026 game or even later. I'm fine with that as long as they are good games, and don't have too much "for a modern audience" nonsense in them.

I thought BI was an absolute mess. It was nothing like the trailers. The mature themes were toothless. Like the part where you're given the choice to throw the baseball. It just stops you if you choose to do it. Why even give me the choice? Give me some consequences or make Elizabeth hate me more. The game didn't know what it wanted to be, teetering rapidly between sci-fi political thriller and Disney movie. The weapon implementation didn't make any sense. You could upgrade weapons, but there was a two weapon limit. Not only that, but there were TWO sets of weapons depending on what reality you're in, so wtf do you upgrade? I mean the setting was cool, but I'm amazed anyone looks back on it fondly. Go replay it. It doesn't hold up.

The Judas trailer looks less than a game and more of a investor pitch. A collection of concepts and slices created to explore ideas but nothing more, compiled into something that could be called a trailer. Parts of it look really dated graphics wise almost as if it was re-skinned old Bioshock engine, whilst other bits look relatively more modern, though still a bit dated now. What is most disappointing to me is just how familiar everything looks again, like there is no progression or evolution. Then again truly good immersive sims are a rare breed, so maybe it wont matter, though I feel its a risk, especially when we at least got some progression with say Prey or Dishonored.

Tons of games used to do the same thing and their trailers would not be actual game play, but would be CGI made to show what the game play would be like, but not exactly because it looked far superior to the graphics in engine. This was a very common thing and I don't know why this game gets criticized so heavily for it when it happened with just about every other game of the time.

Centralized design documents have been a thing of the past for a long time. Most studios, including Bethesda, use some sort of internal wiki system to keep track of the project instead, as having one centralized design document isn't a viable option when the production teams count in 100s of people.

re Kojima and game bloat. I recall playing MGS4: Guns of the Patriots and being astounded (and not in a good way) about the number of cutscenes that finished only to start other cutscenes. It was really annoying. The game itself was really fun, but all the time where the game forced me to watch and not interact while teasing that I might get to play again soon was inexcusable

Ken left irrational. Got everyone sacked. Took like 8 of his mates with him to his new company cos he didn't want to make big games like bioshock anymore. Then 10 years later look at this shit. He made Bioshock again.

I dont know in other countries and Industries, but in India IT Industry, MNC's (Multi -National Companies) attrition rate is 25-30%. Means every year 30% employees resign voluntarily. If you work in a team on any project on Development, Production, Supporting, in Three years 90% are new team mates. You even don't know that your colleague's today is his last day only at end-of-the-day.

I gotto say I regularly go back and play Infinite, I just love the setting and set pieces of the world so much. Story is alright for the most part. But it feels larger than Bioshock 1&2 in a gameplay sense. Imo of course.

Its not that uncommon that games shift in development and are commonly talked about....Off the top of my head, its known that RE0 was restarted after being announced and switched systems, RE2 was restarted 50% through its development, RE4 was restarted atleast 3 different times and had been shown off. Uncharted 3 had to move Henning off the project because it was a mess, she was then kicked form Uncharted 4 because they didn't like her ideas and the team was doing nothing. Its quite common, sometimes things don't work like you wanted them to, sometimes the project budget gets cut, sometimes hardware isn't capable of what the team wanted to do, sometimes platforms get switched. At one point DMC was a RE game until they decided that it wasn't anything like a RE game.

Feels like they take the idea of a multiverse, a concept ripe with exploration of ideas, and just do the whole. “Another me is bad.” Like, I can see why, but there’s just so many more ideas to explore with that concept.

I very much disagree. Bioshock Infinite is actually the worse Bioshock or Immersive sims in the franchise imo. The best is Bioshock 1, second Bioshock 2. It's also the most linear btw... In which arguably anti thesis to what immersive sims level design supposed to be (most of the time). This is also why I think Prey is way way better than Bioshock Infinite & practically what Bioshock & Bioshock 2 sequel supposed to be.

I can't remember who it was. But I remember watching a video of a guy who was a level designer of Bioshock 1, and apparently that game came out as quick as it did because they had no script so this guy took it upon himself to pretty much write a rough draft of the game, utilizing all the ideas that Levine had put forward (this is when they narrowed down that it would be set in rapture) and Levine pretty much just touched up on that guys script and beefed it up. Levine is a really good ideas guy. But he struggles hard on putting those ideas together.
