The original version of Bloodlines 2 was also going to feature his work, but everything was tossed it and now it looks like it's going to be a travesty, making all the same mistakes as Dragon Age II and Fallout 4 with a pre-defined voiced protagonist and an inner voice that never stops talking that feels reminiscent of one of the biggest issues with Forspoken.

The story of bioshock infinite made sense. You are the bad guy and the good guy. You need to die to stop the loop. If you can't understand it, that is on you. I don't have worries about his game. Gameplay is always fun, and at the end of the day he is trying to focus on story and gameplay focus. Creating new techonology to solve a problem that adds more depth to singleplayer games. That has more replay value and I am not worried.

There's a saying in England, that a camel is a horse designed by committee. Generally, I think a singular person having the final say is a good thing. Everyone ends up knowing what they need to do, how long they've got to do it and it preserves a cohesive/coherent vision for the product. Most entertainment these days, be it games movies or TV, seems to be suffering from ever increasing budgets and creation time, and when they do release, end up being rather generic and lacklustre. I'd put this down to too many people being involved in the process. Lots of different people with different ideas will lead to confusion and a product trying to do everything and appeal to everyone.

Luke hit the nail on the head. An established concept being verbally convoluted to sound novel. I hope it subverts those expectations. I think it'll probably be good either way. Likely not earth-shattering the way Levine would have us believe.

I feel like you´re not understanding the Lego stuff completely Luke. I think this is different than just RPG with choices, cause this isn´t scripted by the devs- it´s supposed to be system which makes different encounters, story beats, music, gameplay completely individual to a player. That´s why he´s pushing that term Narrative Lego, we´ll see in due time if it lives up to the name.

I think the issue is it's all fine and dandy to say that high concept stuff, but what does that actually mean in practice? How do you get story beats and music that aren't scripted by the devs? Things can't spontaneously generate in games. They need to either be explicitly programmed, randomly generated, or AI generated. Or this needs to be a fundamentally new concept that videogames and software have never seen before, which is not impossible, but hard to imagine.

This is the right mindset I think. Tho, I would be lying if I said I do not trust Ken Levine. Judas looks very promising to me, but I say this as a person who almost never play new games anymore and could take it or leave it. I think I will play Judas simply because I really liked Bioshock Infinite at a time, even when gameplay is lacking (and personally I am not a first person shooter guy at all), I think the story for Levine's games is worth experiencing first hand.

Ken had one "miss", Which wasn't even a miss technically because the game was a critical and commercial success. Only in the eyes of the vocal minority are his games considered bad. I believe he did the right thing after Infinite, downsizing his team and removing any deadline. He clearly has an idea that needed to cook and I don't imagine 2k would have given him the time he's had if they didn't see the potential.

I don't think making a "same'ish" game is bad. As long as You iterate on the idea and this thing keeps evolving. From Software has been making basically the "same" thing for over a decade. Rockstar has been doing the same thing since GTA 3 also. Porsche has been making VW Bettle 😉 since the 1950s - look at them now.

Death Stranding was definitely novel and new in terms of no one else has ever made a Fedex simulator. But just because something is novel doesn't mean it's good/fun and CERTAINLY doesn't mean it's a new genre. I don't see any other developer ever making a game similar to DS, so then it's not really a genre is it?

To my understanding from watching the interview on the Friends Per Second Podcast is that it is similar to Bioshock, but its more of a rogue-like in design. I think it'll be interesting to see how a choice drive rogue-like could be designed and play out. Also hence why he called it "narative lego".

It was a mess because they didn't have a plan ahead of time and one of the writers left who wanted to answer questions at the end of a season instead of simply answering questions with even more questions. The writers strike wasn't responsible for the numerous blunders the show made.

I think I understand what the "lego narrative" might mean if it is what I think it is. But I do want to say that if its anything like what I'm about to say It'll require very good writers and its gonna be one hell of a thing to make. So hearing how he insists it's NOT just like any RPG where certain paths get locked behind certain conditions (Basic scripting), this means that the game isn't really linear but more like small pools of events that could happen in any order. No scripted pathing rather all the game has is a beginning and an "ending" which might mean that everyones ending will be different depending in the order certain things happened. It's sort of like how some authors write stories in a way where if you start reading from the end to the beggining you end up with a completely different story then if you read it normally, there is also a case where this one anime I remember seeing where like depending which episode you watch first determines the story you get and the ending changes a lot. On top of that add stuff like NPCs remembering certain actions you made thus determining whether they help you out or not, event pools being locked if conditions aren't met or others opeing up depending on conditions or the order events have played out, how maybe you can potentially end up with a short playthough cause you fucked up or a super long one by accident, someones finale could potential a short stepping stone in your playthough, etc. The replayability for something like that could be endless. But once again in order for that to properly work and make sense you have to have really REALLY good writers to be able to tell a story in parts and leave it open ended enough (While simultaneously keeping it closed enough that if it becomes the ending it doesn't feel like something is missing) with out depending on other events to happen or have happened (And for it to make sense cause like you mentioned doing the "its just deep" isn't gonna work here). It's like having a jar of marbles and then you empty the jar on the ground thus having the marbles roll around randomly, one marble is specifically the beginning (This is the one you pick up first no matter what) meanwhile there isn't a marble for an actual ending and your playthough is just you picking up the marbles in any order you want until there are no more marbles to pick up, that last marble would technically be your "ending" and if you lost a marble or 2 during the processing of spreading them around the ground then you don't get to see those in your play through. But thats just what I thought when he mentioned how its just legos or "blocks", and isn't suppose to be like any other RPG. I am most likely wrong and everything I just said is bull shit but whatever. We'll know what he means once the game comes out.

If they do it when the game is still 2 or 3 years away, then it's just avoid revealing too much, since anything is subject to change during development.
