Electronic drums have been around since the 1960s, and with each generation, we witness a whole new set of technologies being used to provide drummers with innovative ways of producing sounds on a drum set. In the 1980s, we had the Simmons SDS-V; the 2000s brought us V-drums. Now, in 2023, we are stepping into an entirely new realm of electronic percussive possibilities. Today, we will explore an entirely new approach to connecting drummers with electronic drumming.

As a passionate drummer since the age of 6, I've traversed the world of music in ways many might find eclectic. From being a percussionist in symphonic orchestras and philharmonic ensembles, to playing in rock, metal, and especially post-rock-metal-progressive bands. I've also had the opportunity to jump deep into electronic soundscapes, DJing, even establishing my own music label dedicated to uniquely eclectic electronic artists. Recently, I've found myself drawn to experimental and contemporary music, looking to blur the lines between electronic and acoustic worlds. Inspired by artists like Nils Frahm, who seamlessly integrate the organic and the electronic, I envision a long-term solo project that pushes boundaries and creates an intense live experience around the drum as the main character. I've already prototyped some pieces with Ableton Live and traditional druming. But the EVANS Hybrid presented seems like a groundbreaking tool to bring my vision to life. Well this is how I would use this innovation I think : half of the drum with the EVANS Hybrid and half with the traditional acoustics to explore all the possibilities and combinaisons.

I've been wanting to get a decent e-kit to be able to practice with and relearn how to play a full kit with after years without any gear. While this kit has WAY more features than I was looking for, I would never miss an opportunity to grab a kit like this where I could spend hours just playing with the software!

Great tool for creative expression. It does not replace acoustic drums it is a whole new way of expressing rhythm leveraging your existing drumming skills. Polyrhythms using velocity controllers and effects an create some really cool soundscapes. The ability to add modular sequences and velocity filters to tigger notes chord progressions or whatever is pretty cool. My goal using this tool is generating song ideas and just exploring beats, rudiments, grooves with field samples on my own kit designs.

My comment for a chance to win one of those great kits, here we go 🤞: I would start using it as a practice tool, probably I would turn this small acoustic drum kit that I have into a practice one that I could use at home. Not only it has a great potential, but It also seems to be a very quiet option. So, at first I would set it up to use mainly acoustic sound kits while gradually experimenting with all the electronic sounds and options. How does it sound?

Interesting. Obviously we are only hearing a fraction of the sounds available, but there is a lot of potential. I do like using my acoustic kit at gigs, however at smaller venues (which is where the average musician often plays) I can never play with full dynamics, as hard hits are just too loud. With a good mix of acoustic and electronic samples, I could play with full dynamics, but keep to a suitable volume. The one thing that does strike me is that to use the full potential of the system (i.e. different sounds from different zones of the drum) will require a lot of accuracy (as an ex punk drummer, not something I am always that good at!).

I am a drummer and electronic musician. I mostly play drums and percussion, so composing and preforming My electronic music on drums makes sense. I love sound design. I enjoy creating sounds that are unique to my music. i like that I can do that with this system. I would use this all the time for composing and performing. I think creating sounds and then improvising with them and see what happens would be really cool, just exploring. All in all I would make some music that I would otherwise not be able to and have fun doing so.

This is so cool! I would probably use regular heads and just blend in some of the trigger sounds. The WAY you can do that is amazing: i use to practise drums to a hardware analogue synth with a sequencer, I now think this synth sound can be controlled via a drum trigger.

This hybrid kit is cool! I just started drumming one year ago (during Domino’s first 30 DD class in 2022) bc my three kiddos (all 13 and under) play drums and guitar (bass and lead). I want this trigger setup because I want to drum more and experiment more, but because of my neighbors I can only play till 3:00 pm and that holds my creativity back. Fred "Kickstand" Johnson I would utilize this as a practice tool. I loved working with my previous electronic kit, to come up with sounds. I moved over to an acoustic kit, and this would be perfection of both workds combined. I'm super hype for this system! Right now, I'm running a mishmash of stuff at the rehearsal studio: an old Pearl Rhythm Traveler converted into an edrum set, hooked up using an Audiofront eDrumIn 4 to a laptop running Slate Drums 5.5 or Superior Drummer 2 in Ableton Live, along with an Alesis Strike Multipad to trigger additional percussion; instead of using electronic cymbal pads, I've got some cheap low volume cymbals and a single overhead mic. Getting the Strike Multipad into a comfy playing posiition is really tough and because I went with budget-friendly trigger options, playing with a full dynamic range is also tough. This hybrid system from Evans and Sensory Percussion could simplify my rehearsal kit and expand my sound arsenal at the same time. Definitely putting some dough aside to pick it up when I can

This is awesome as I think hybrid drums are evolving and this may be the next thing. I just started using a Roland e kit for live shows and it's very easy to set up, queue in the kit your using and play. Hate to say, acoustic is heavy, loud in the room, but still tbh, it still sounds sooo good and I feel still acts as a natural extension of my limbs as I play it. The issue is for smaller clubs depending on the style of music, acoustic can be offensively loud. I am thinking strongly about hybrid and using this system I think will be amazing. Just wondering about the cymbals, would those still be rubber or could you use those low volume Zildjians and trigger them for example? Anyhow, I would love a video of a deeper dive into this set up but more for rock music, regular kit set up with cymbals.

It would definitely open up a lot of possibilities of samples in my band, even for example to trigger an intro before a show, or before/at the end of a song. Eventually maybe putting some in songs too, but what I'm thinking is sampling my own stuff, and when I play live, I could just bring this if I don't want to bring ALL my cymbals. Like if I need a chinese, I could have it sampled. It seems a lot more simple to carry than cymbals and stands and extra toms, etc, especially if you don't use it in all the songs. It just looks fun to play around anyway!

Thanks Drumeo and “Philo”.. good stuff. I think Evans have a great product. I think it needs time in the hands of drummers and two versions.. a easy version with basic setup and editing features. And a pro-version opened fully with all editing parameters. I use Native Instruments and have dabbled with Superior drummer. Having to use a computer does restrict portability and create a risk if something drops out live. Does the unit work without a pc? Evans recently released the low noise heads and silent cymbal range, I think if they nail a cymbal set that’s metal and have the sensory triggering.. It would revolutionize the electronic drumming industry. It’s still missing in the e-drum World.

New tech is always exciting but daunting and to some drummers the thought of having to re-learn their instrument or re-learn how to use their instrument is too much. For me it’s exciting and I would use this product to hybrid my kit; use some triggers on acoustic drums to expand the sonic capabilities of the classic instrument and also use some triggers on mesh heads for completely electronic sounds to enhance my composition. The possibilities look endless and that excites me! (Would definitely be used with my pies though 😅)

tl;dr - I'm down to be entered in the contest!! If I received this, I'd use it to experiment to bridge between what e-drums are now & what they could be used for. I want to figure out looping, I want to layer playing from this kind of set-up with a synth, eventually I want to make my own music or cover songs I like from scratch with my own sound. I want to play out (gigs), ultimately, and be able to curate the sound experience I contribute to a band or... be able to do it all between this sensory percussion set and a synthesizer. Or maybe someday I'd stream playing - I'm just learning to play drums now, but I'm hoping to get into more of a rhythm of learning once I change jobs and settle in. (My plan is to start my Drumeo trial real soon; I'm on a timeline currently bc of other things, is all.) With that out of the way... Huge misconception: Kyle seems to think folks don't wanna hear him talk about how to use smthg like this (Evans/Sound House sensory percussion) software/platform - I would ABSOLUTELY watch a series on using filters or navigating programs in real time to get what you want out of drums. Through practicing, I'd love to figure out the settings I'd want to be able to change between during a gig. Imagine: imagining what you want and then... being able to get that. If that's the new phase, I'm into it because I've been a bit underwhelmed by the sounds on the Simmons Titan 50, despite it being better than the Donner DED-200 as far as I can tell. One of them is getting sent back, most likely the DED-200. And I'd invest in more software and stuff to hook up to the USB-midi if I could tell what I'd be able to learn how to do (and what that process of learning could be like for me). Also - idk if everyone realizes that the *content* that enables people to get into the tech in a way that works for them influences the directions that such evolution can happen. Before video content was so readily available, the people determining how music tech would develop were the people in the industry using it, who had access to it and knew what was being done with it, what was possible. Now, providing insight into how ordinary people (from hobbyists (who might even be more accustomed to tech) to various flavors of professional & amateur musicians) can integrate it with what they already do (& like) lowers some of those barriers and creates the potential for so many directions, all of which serve different purposes. That's why I think Drumeo is really great. I started learning drums bc I **wanted** to learn synthesizers but realized I was missing a large base of knowledge about rhythm and what goes into it, and while I was researching that, I came upon Drumeo. I grew up playing piano (12 years of lessons), yet the physicality of playing drums feels really good to me. So pursuing the combination of getting the sounds I want and moving in a way that feels good for producing that combination and progression of sounds is going to keep me learning the skills that enable me to move in ways that drummers do to hit the way they want to hit, i.e. through Drumeo... and also, the more content in this vein of mastering sound (orchestration? engineering? but for the pairing of drumheads and sounds) will keep me on the line here in tandem with other research I do to flesh out my capabilities as relates to other arenas of music production via tech+instrumentation.

I'd use it to practice details like rim-shot accuracy whithout disturbing my neighbours. No other e-drums can do that :(

I currently have a Roland TD27KV kit, and I would love to also add an acoustic kit, but just don’t have the space. The Evans Hybrid setup would let me have the best of both worlds with one kit.

I would TOTALLY use some triggers with An aux kick, an aux snare, and a gong drum!!

My brain is not big enough for the Evans Hybrid. But I’m always happy to be proven wrong. Good episode of Drum Department, as usual. Nice to see a female guest drummer this time. Informative and entertaining hosting once again by Kyle and Dave. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love Drumeo.

so basically it "guess" the position of the drum hit using algorithm that's been train with machine learning. It probably can recognize what angle the drum stick hits the surface if they do the training on those too. interesting. I guess that trigger is one zone, which would simplified the hardware design quite a lot too.

With Reaper daw and a single piezo you can set the sensitivity for example if the piezo is placed under the center of snare you can tigger different sounds as you play closer to the rim... the only con is bleeding if you are not precise with the intensity of your strokes. So i imagine this new product takes all of that and sorts it out

This technology seems interesting, but some examples sounded like a mesh... Too much possibilities maybe... I find more creativity in overcoming the "limitations" in a traditional kit....

To me is looks like a more creative tool and less structured than what we can do with Ableton but you could use both together for the ultimate in creativity.

Sounds very industrial. However I can see how this can create a different style of drummer.
