I am not a big fan of the interviewer. He made almost every question sound about himself. And they should be about Prof. Coontz, who is an extremely interesting scholar and extremely interesting person. His questions also didn't sound like he wanted to pick her brain for the benefit of the audience, to prompt her to speak of the most interesting parts of her research that he has read when preparing for the interview. I wished he focused more on her and less about himself.

He seems to have come with a set of questions and he asked them. I don't think this is all that uncommon. Her answers didn't seem to have much of an effect on his questions. He thinks he has thought this out, but Stephanie Coontz is a real expert, she's researched and taught this stuff for decades, and he can't come up with some questions that she has not faced before.

Poor social skills (interrupting) plus perhaps so excited by the opportunity to interview her that he can't control his excitement. I think she is very gracious and patient. What do you expect from someone who says "ekcetera"? (him) Plus I noticed with great appreciation that she says "prenuptial" instead of "prenup-shoo-al" like most people.

A very clear and pragmatic understanding of what marriage was and is. Just finished her book and loved seeing her speak in person.

This is incredibly painful to watch. He keeps interrupting her and doesn't seem to understand the difference between a male who had sex with a woman who produced a kid and a sperm donor. Brutal on him. But Stephanie Coontz is wonderful to watch and listen to so far.

Not aure one size fits all. In my case, 31 yrs married later in life with no desire for children, and romantic love and like (didn't really know the person very well) having died years ago, I think I would have appreciated the option of re-upping every 5-10 yrs. In my case, I've always been very independent and I have a fulfilling life of my own w friends, exercise, faith, intellectual pursuits, etc. Probably would be better off on my own altho at times companionship doesn't suck. Plus it has forced me to grow up a lot in problem-solving skills and emotional maturity.

What is the deal with these questions he's asking? They're huge and it seems as though he's expecting simple answers that just cannot be given. Yes siblings conceived via sperm donations are searching for each other but that is both a social and biological question - not one that deserves such a generalized approach. As she points out, it may be that because there are fewer societal mores defining what is a family, the idea of "family" comes down to a biological definition. But how do we explain estrangement in families? Or blended families? I think this gentleman is asking the wrong kinds of questions.

He's also interrupting her when she is making interesting points and not really listening and following her line of thought. As if he wanted to school her, and not the other way round.

Sperm donation is dumb. Imagine having to marry your half-brother or half-sister, because one guy donated so much sperm.

Responsible sexual behavior, as in, couples do not get knocked up when they are noncommitted and could care less about being a parent. Use birth control as opposed to letting the taxpayers foot the bill for bad choices.

What a fantastic interview. So true, going back to the garden of eden. What was the point in those two being there? They did not need papers. They knew that they had a responsibility since there was no third in the event of being a bad person!

Why are people still getting married, asks Professor Mansplainer... Because it's in the cultural brine we're all pickled in, that's why. Because what would happen to all those industries that depend upon marriage and the typical contemporary two-parent-three-child-McMansion-dwelling-minivan-driving-suburban American family for their existence? Marriage plus merchandise equals the American economy.

I am now curious to know more about this woman and will search on Google for "Stephanie Coontz." From what she says in this conversation, she is not favorable towards marriage of any kind as I know it at 68 years of age. That means Civil or Christian. Certainly, she is not favorably towards Christian marriage as I understand it in a Church, though did not address it directly in manner that I found memorable in any manner for me. I am an Oblate of New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, California, a Benedictine and in my 18th year as an Oblate in relation to the Hermitage. I attend the Episcopal Church in the United States, so it is safe to say I think of myself as a Christian. I also write about Religion, and going on ten years in relationship with Church of England Newspaper, London. I write about Christian or Jews. I do not write about ot her faiths, including spiritualists or Buddhists, etc. If you visit that Newspapers pages, look for me under "Columnists." Stephanie Coontz did not say she is a Lesbian, so I assume she is not. It was said of her that she is a Feminist. That is how I remember it.

I don't think the romantic type of love is special. And I am started to think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other, while most platonic best friends remain friends until death. I think that having a platonic best friend is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse is. Having someone who's like a sibling to you is a lot better than having a romantic partner is. Also, you would more likely be much closer to a person who's like a brother or sister to you than you would be with a partner or spouse. People tend to fight with their partner or spouse a lot more than they do with a platonic best friend, and you never fight with your best friend the way you fight with your partner or spouse. Partners and spouses are just temporary. If you break up or divorce them, it's hard to go back to them. With your platonic best friend, you're going to make things work, because they are your best friend, they are your go to partner. It's always easier to make amends with them than it is with a romantic partner or spouse.

Okay, that's been an interesting discussion but I stopped watching the video when she said "There should be a legal option for the man to be allowed to opt out of financial support for their eventual child when it's born." That's some very wrong mentality! Don't tell me that it's okay for a person, any person, to go around giving their reproductive material, against payment, without any care in the world. Thinking that the kids coming out of reproductive banks shouldn't be supported by their own biological parents IS WRONG! There are lots of complex problems around this, that's right, but make reproductive banks paid, don't pay ppl to give material wtf. Once the kid is born, the subscription money goes to it directly, in its own account etc.
