The future of modern warfare: How technology is transforming conflict | DW Analysis

The world is entering a new era of warfare, with cyber and autonomous weapons taking center stage. These technologies are making militaries faster, smarter, more efficient. But if unchecked, they threaten to destabilize the world.
DW takes a deep dive into the future of conflict, uncovering an even more volatile world. Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tells DW that we have already entered the technological arms race that is propelling us towards this future. “We’re right in the middle of it. That’s the reality we have to deal with.”
And yet the world is failing to meet the challenge. Talks on controlling autonomous weapons have repeatedly been stalled by major powers seeking to carve out their own advantage. And cyber conflict has become not just a fear of the future but a permanent state of affairs.

Yes! And the Ray Bradbury story “there will come soft rains.” Years after California was demolished by nuclear attack, a smart house is still doing everything all day every day. Little robots vacuuming the floors, automatic kitchen cooks breakfast lunch and dinner then cleans up, turn lights on in the morning and off at night, etc. BUT everyone is dead and the smart home keeps working for nobody and has no idea

Well since no actual soldiers are killed during the clash, it might make it easier for countries to back down. If soldiers were to be killed in a border clash, it makes it harder for the countries to back down since they lost citizens. It is interesting to see how this will play out.

One thing that annoys me is that my country (Netherlands), but also Germany and the US are spending massively on their armies by buying tanks, planes, whatever. I've been wondering that no government can afford TO follow the pace, now that we are ALL already financially consumed by having to adapt to climate change, not having clean water and foods etc. E.g. Luckily, the major players have so many nukes swimming in the oceans, they really don't have to worry: they could destroy the enemy, even if the enemy nukes a few cities first. And even if they nuke the enemy first, then they themselves get nuked into oblivion. In other words: No need to rush armageddon on either side. Well, Germany's position on autonomous weapons is also more complicated because of their definition of lethal autonomous and automatic system. German representatives usually argue that you cannot prohibit autonomous weapons because they are not developed today and won't be in the near future. Basically the government says it supports a ban of autonomous weapons but practically is doing the opposite by using this argumentation.

Why is AI warfare a bad thing? AI won't commit war crimes (unless you tell it to, and then we all know who's responsible), AI won't die and leave behind a grieving widow. All things considered, I'd say it's preferable.

Thanks to DW for this thoughtful documentary. Thanks for the different people who worked together to make it realistic and artistic in the same time. When thinking about the intrinsèque motor of evolution of humanity, fear is not stranger at all. Fear taught our ancestor how to run faster, hide and use camouflage in nature, ride horses, make armes, develop technologies etc... Fear that was very useful in the past is pushing humanity to destruct itself. The jinn is out of the bottle now. Humanity got enough savoir-faire to start preparing the end of it. The effort made here and there, in the UN, by ONGs and by nations may help for certain extent to delay the unpreventable but in the long run we have to work on the human side not on the systems. In my opinion we have to relieve humanity from its fear. A kind of international coordinator or government stronger than the UN can give some insurance to countries and groups victims of intense fear. Deep thinking about this subject can reveal a project of new way of governing. This government can be elected democratically and can govern federally to preserve specificity of nations. Knowing how much nations care about theirs. The first objectif of this government is to ensure any miscalculations nations may do against each other. It creates a huge awareness among nations. Nations' jealousy about the sovereignty is very understood but the effort and the sacrifice to make contour of it is Worth. Climate change, Nuclear armement, cyber, economy crushes, pandemics can be dealt with by a central human coordinator or central government. A complicated task that may find serious taker in the future!

A noble cause. A utopia where everyone sees themselves not as separate races or nations but instead all members as part of the human race or as united nations. Sadly, the world has yet to come up with a faultless governing body. The United Nations in it's current form can't seem to resolve all global conflicts. Instead of saving the human race we're intent on destroying it. But Mother Earth has been here for 4.5B yrs and she'll be around for, at least, another 4.5B. If humanity becomes too toxic she'll just cough em up and spit em out and start all over again. If we don't get our act together first.

Stuxnet is a USA, Israeli cyber program that was used against Iran's nuclear facility. Who told u it came from Russia? It was rather discovered by a Belurussian or Ukrainian anti virus firm. Which media org feeds u info?

Military power is more about how long you can stay fighting rather how hard you can hit (explains why U.S. could not bring down Vietnam. Israel can certainly pack a punch, but with a small economy, the cannot sustain 2 years of full-scale war against even a middle-sized country like Turkey because Turkey has more resources

When you talk about kamikaze drones and you bring up the term "fire and forget" you misunderstand what that means, its actually refers to something else that has been around for a while now over 20 years in systems like the Javelin missile. It doesn't mean you release it in the air and forget about it what fire and forget means is that once a soldier locks on a target the weapon will keep itself on the target without further guidance.

Not necessarily, the "fire and forget" in question with the loitering drones means once it's programmed and out of the launcher it will be fully autonomous. Also the same with javelins, once fired the human no longer has control but with the drones the targeting is also autonomous
