Please speak to SDS/Universal/Dreamworks Animation to release their traditionally animated movies in 4k. They did a good job with Prince of Egypt. Same love needed for Spirit: Stallion of Cimmaron and others. Thanks

Any reason you heard of as to why you still cannot pre order True Lies, The Abyss or Aliens 4k on Amazon US store? Also does Aliens and Abyss 4k come with the extended editions? I pre ordered on B&N but if Amazon has it cheaper I'd love to go through them.

My library has no charge for borrowing Blurays or DVDs, and you can take like 10 for a week. The only time you pay is if you are late to return them, but you can call or go online and extend your time for an extra week if you really want to. They get new titles weekly, and will get anything you request too. I bet a lot of people just don't know their library does this, I didn't for the longest time.

I wish they could release a physical version of a movie first before releasing the digital version. Like the old days. I wonder how that would affect the business model. Maybe it would help boost sales before putting it on a streaming service. They’re not making money on streaming anyway. Might as well try the old model again.

After purchasing a brand new Sony 4K Blu-ray player, I decided to purchase 4K discs at Best Buy and Target. I was shocked how small the DVD/Blu-ray section was, almost to non-existent. I want to my Walmart today and it was a disgrace. In a 40 mile radius, only one store had the steelbook section. My fear is that with Walmart most of us will be stuck with their preorders and shipping. My Walmart physical media section doesn’t even have the one row of movies. Point is that Walmart is very inconsistent from store to store. This concerns me. I should not have to drive past 10 Walmart stores to get to the store that has a proper physical media section.

Here in The Netherlands, they decreased a lot of physical media for movies and series. In Media Markt stores they sold a lot of movies and series on blu ray, 4K and DVD, but since 2021 I believe they scaled it down! Now their is only a small department for physical media😢😢. For the last 10 years, a lot of stores have disappeared that sold physical Media. Media Markt is at least the only store nowadays here that sell physical media. What do I miss the old glory days of the blu ray films and series since the coming of the PS3.

Best Buy getting out of the physical media game is really unfortunate. They always had good prices and I would much rather go to Best Buy than go to Walmart. My issues with streaming is the ever increasing price & having to hunt from one platform to another to watch something (waste of time). Good question. Probably, yes, but these prices are historically low. Laserdiscs would sell for $50 in the 90s. That’s like $100 in today’s money. So the price is pretty good for a lot of stuff. I think if they can get new releases to sit at 15/20/25 for DVD/Blu-ray/4K, that’s a sweet spot.

*I wouldn’t count on Walmart.* My local Walmarts have _significantly_ reduced their physical movie selection. The $5 bins are completely gone & the movie aisle, which was both sides, has been consolidated down to a single side of that aisle. Target had a small section that’s been reduced to an end cap. Just wondering, if an attempt by the studios to revive this will be enough to keep the concept of physical media alive generally. The ecosystem in physical media for independent video producers (outside of entertainment content) is pretty much gone already. So its worth asking what will the support for physical media writ large be down the road when the support for advanced disk authoring thats been gone for years now is only in the hands of people who master disks for the studios. Not just Blu Ray1080 but UHD, software, burners and more.

I can't imagine buying my physical media from Walmart. The occasional find, sure, but for them to be the major source of physical media is disheartening. Have you seen how their physical media is treated and mulled over by customers? Not well. It's manhandled so much that corners are dented, scratches are often on the slip cases, and you can hear the discs bouncing around the inside of the case. Good luck finding acceptable copies of media there.

Not just physical media but alot of stuff at Bestbuy is changing. I just went to my local one over the weekend and they literally had more movies than bluetooth speakers lmao. The audio aisle was completely baron aside from the big party speakers.

But what about the longer term? Will formats change, what about players? Will software be available to use CPs whan dedicated players are no longer available? I've already go thousands of DVD-Rs I need to find a player for.

The only movie I've seen walmart have the bluray and 4k for in months was Trolls. I can't find any of the movies actually on my list, and online shopping is always a gamble.

Jeff, I consider your channel a valuable resource when I need an honest opinion buying movies. I have been debating if I should sell my old DVD and CD collections. The issues with not owning the content and the ongoing upheaval in the entertainment industry has made my decision easier. Now I only buy movies when I want to upgrade to Blu ray or 4K. I appreciate your reviews since they help narrow down the decision making process. It's difficult to wade through all of the marketing and hype sometimes. Thanks again.

I mean the switching to release every fortnight I think is the move to give stuff more time for titles to clear shelves and for people to get it in time with their paycheck’s. I don’t know outside of the US, but here people typically get paid every two weeks.

Thanks for these updates. I'm happy that physical media is still moving forward. And I don't mind that they'll be releasing biweekly. I also saw Walmart prepping a few racks for their physical media. They're having a line of steelbooks coming in.

Ability to permanently borrow from streaming services combined with as much physical media I can get means I have what I want to watch and when I want to watch it.

Great video. Thanks! Do you think one should pick up a “spare” 4K player at this point? There only seems to be 2-3 manufacturers left. Can I find a Sony or Panasonic a year or two from now? Their models date back some 5-6 years now.

I'm glad I was able to put expanding my collection on hold until I got my new 85-inch Sony Bravia XR85X90CL 4K UHD TV without the format disappearing. I have the TV, am learning more about how to use it with 4K Blu-rays, and enjoying every moment of the journey. I just started adding to my collection again and am glad I'll still have plenty of opportunity to continue doing so.

As a Europeen with a multiregion player, I always buy US 4Ks when visiting US, was sad to see the Best Buy and Target in Mission Valley San Diego had no movies available. The staff just said, why dont you buy online. Yeah, I do, however I have always appreciated to be able to browse when in the store and bring back home.. :(

I have streaming services for everyday watching. But started collecting physical media for our friday night movie or when we really want to sit down and enjoy a movie. Ive been upgrading my home setup since finding your youtube videos, and now my wife and i never go to the movies. We just wait for the 4k and enjoy it at home. No stranger texting or chewing loud ruing our movie.

Streaming is removing stuff, and people are realizing they don't actually own anything. It disappears..and people start to want to own something. There is also the quality issue. I buy lots of foreign films and anime and it either doesn't exist on streaming or I can't read the Subtitles because of poor bandwidth.
