Ride-hailing apps such as Uber, Ola and Lyft are not only challenging taxi drivers around the world, they are also disrupting the car industry as a whole as people prefer to hail a ride than buy their own set of wheels.

The Disrupters is an original series exploring how major industries-from music and cars to hospitality-are currently being disrupted by the latest wave of digital innovation. As well as enjoying privileged access into the world biggest tech start ups we show how industry giants respond when faced with such tech-driven innovation. Do they adapt-or die?
The name of Ola's founder and chief executive officer is spelled incorrectly in this video. It should be Bhavish Aggarwal. We are sorry for the error. June 1st, 2016.

Great showcase of ride sharing technologies. The green economy gains momentum every time someone uses shared ridership and opts out of buying a vehicle... Great video!

I appreciate the Ford CEO is trying to grapple with the future, and has a lot of product in his hair, but he transparently doesn't actually know much about young people. ("er, texting, playing video games..")

I'm very, very glad that the taxi industry has to come up with no innovations to survive. For too long have people payed too much for their rides, it's a shame.

Oh God, I was driving home near dusk the other night and I seriously thought to myself the idea of driverless cars will be so much safer. First, you have to adjust your eyes to different light settings, I had to angle my head to deflect the glare from oncoming car lights, check my rear mirror, check my blindspots while changing lanes, slow down on the ridiculously dangerous curbs we have on Kiwi roads. This was while driving an automatic. You have even more going on with a manual. I think a society with highly skilled human drivers, if you prefer to use them, or using self driving cars if you like would be superb.

Finer tuning of locations of living and working will save a lot of energy and time. Car sharing is a decent amendment of our loosely managed cities. Smart cities, citizen participation is the real power of the revolution, I think. Google map hasn't offered any services like Esri, a spatial analysis tool/service, maybe that will rewrite the whole algorithms after enough data has been collected! Think car sharing, food delivering service as a big data companies, rather than a service provider.

My problem with these “disruptive” techno, ogres is the exploitation of independent service providers for profit. This turns the technology companies into the slave drivers of society, while they do not invest in the service providers.

Ford is trying to prevent becoming "just a shell" for driverless technology. I think this is the wrong paradigm. What happened to "core competencies"? IMHO those making the big bugs will be those who combine the best driverless technology with the best car platform. Complicating factors are the interfaces, including the sensors. I understand that for Ford, Mercedes, BMW et al. it is vital to have their own driverless technology/machine learning efforts, as this determines their negotiation position. However, if they drop "traditional" motoring research as a result, they will find themselves on the wrong part of the argument. Closely connected with this is the question re. car ownership. Clearly, the percentage of people owning their own cars will go down once cheap, effective public autonomous vehicles are available. But there will always be a substantial percentage of people who will insist on owning a - self-driving - car. Reasons include status, comfort, not wishing to use public means of transport, longing for a personalized environment etc.

Anyone can design an app to service the need of travellers at the expence of the drivers. There Inlies the problem. If you were asked to work for a pay cut , would you.... now imagine being sacked & finding same new job for less money. Thats essentially the same as ola

Y we can drive cars today? Perhaps, because we have well made roads. Most of the cars today off road are useless. I suspect that we need to update our roads to fit the self driving concept. Then making self driving cars will be much more simple. If the road provides the energy - you don't have to carry batteries, if the road provides all sorts of sensors and informs the car about all objects - you don't need to carry so many computers with u.
