In order to create the lowest cost electricity for Connecticut, much more local DER deployment is needed. These distributed energy resources provide generation, storage, or resource management of the distribution grid and allow grid operators more flexibility. The most costly situations in terms of energy are when demand spikes, like on the hottest summer day. The utilities have been forced to bring peaker plants online at great cost to deal with it. But DERS can change all that. They can be effectively used to level out energy demand, tamping down the spikes. DERs include resources like rooftop solar, battery storage, solar canopies, energy efficiency building management software, and electrical vehicles with bidirectional electricity flow capabilities.
