I play with current cards and decks. However when I play with friends, we don't use omni-negates, or hand traps. We all agree that older yugioh is better, and hate this aspect of modern day yugioh. We hate playing modern yugioh with one card combos, and so many handtraps that makes you not just not play. We may play things like fusion exodia, but don't use those types of effects. We did also just make our life points 20k instead. It is fun, and you can actually play the game. Seriously this is the best type of playing now for us. It's just sad that the tcg just gets more, and more divided. However for us, we are actually having more fun then ever before. Maybe we're just lucky😐🤷‍♂️

Spidey, a banlist won’t be enough if Konami reproduces the same problem afterwards. That’s what has been happening for years now. The always fixed problems so they could sell a solution that became another problem shortly after. And these problems just grew bigger over the years. I don’t think a banlist will fix the game if nothing else changes for the better. We’d need: - better product quality so sealed product is worth buying and opening again. - start by making cards available in different versions so prices are coming down - making cards affordable for more people so formats aren’t gated by card prices - stop using banlists as marketing tools but having them as balancing tools exclusively - increase transparency with the playerbase and customers - stop giving OCG released cards rarity bumps and short prints in the TCG based on their OCG performance. - invest a little in game balance and not only in product sales and profit margins. THOSE would be game changers. Will they happen? Probably not. Are changes needed? 100%

The currrent game is more intteractive which i prefer, i just hate how we always have decks that hit tier 0 and are unstoppable tho

Really liked this type of video. I think you bring up a good perspective that "not liking a deck" doesn't have to be just based on the deck being strong or "dominant" in a format. I think a lot of people (especially online) get way to used to seeing regional results/online post that show representation of "X" deck and automatically decide to hate on it without either A: Playing the deck or B: Thinking about why they hate it. Strong decks can be really fun to play just like how lower level decks can be really fun to play, cuz we're still playing Yugioh at the end of the day. There are some really boring weak decks and really boring strong decks all the same. Keep up the good work Underground!

I just hate the "This into This into This into This into This into This into This" play style the game is now, plus just praying you (A) open up enough hand traps and (B) hoping you Hand Trap the right card and not have your opponent just set up an unbreakable board. I prefer more simple and snappy gameplay where each player takes a turn. First player goes in for a shot, then the other player wipes the blood off their lip and goes "all right, lemme show ya what I got". Yes, older, simpler Yugioh had shitty, unfair cards like Graceful Charity and Delinquent Duo, but at the end of the day, one just has to ask themself what shit they're willing to put up with. I'd still pick older Yugioh, because I'd rather at least know all the cards instead of being slammed head first into a world where I sit there and watch my opponent flex a 10 minute combo string resulting in then being unable to play the game anyway. I can at least TRY to do something if my opponent blows full trinity. But, that's just me.

I totally agree. The metagame nowadays is not creative at all. It’s either 1 of 2 types of decks. 1: Stun your opponent to submission at all cost with your hand traps and negate effects or 2: As you said, Combo this, combo that aimlessly for ages when you know they can just beat you in one turn. It’s honestly annoying to the point where it’s just plain ridiculous and pointless to play altogether. I still consider the Golden Age of Yugioh was around the Synchro-XYZ era when decks were more creative and fun to use. The mechanics were more balanced altogether and we were able to just enjoy each deck for how they work individually. The moment they introduced pendulums and link summoning, the new decks turn into one of those two boring categories and the fun OG decks can never keep up unless you mix in a modern meta engine.

First time i'm seeing the fiend smith and that looked wild. I was already kinda nervous about what comes after snake-eyes but if this is the first peak we're getting...we're in for it. Hope Kisame is doing well and staying sane. I know the holidays can get crazy and be very demanding in his line of work. Been missing his video segments. Also, I enjoy playing in both the old and current formats. I kinda view them as different games, and play whichever format based on what i'm in the mood for. Recently i've been playing older formats a lot more, because i just haven't found a deck that really grabs me in current format.

Personally I hate the normal current format. It’s too competitive now. There’s too many OTK decks, negates, floodgates and bullshit hand traps. This is not the same game I started playing and fell in love with back in 2003. So I stopped playing the normal current format and only play past format and 2 custom formats that me and my friends created. We have much more fun playing that way.

Wish I could join your friend circle. I would love to bring back OG decks like Pure Dark Worlds, Fire Kings, Bujins, Classic Red-Eyes with the more balanced Fusion boss monsters (Not the Dragoon garbage), Six Sams, Madolches, Mecha Phantom Beasts, and so on. Man I miss those days!

1 card combos / engines and combinations of decks that do thay (snake eyes, melodius, kash, etc etc) are basically everything. Fiendsmith is gonna be the same. Sadly this shits down to bad card design and konami not having any new ideas / knowing what formula makes money. Competitive is very soulless, but the game is still very much alive

Honestly, my main reason I don’t play Yugioh anymore is more of just a combination of Money and simple time. I have a shit load of interests. So playing Yugioh is just one that I sorta had to choose to let go by the wayside.

@coreymcgivney5897 honestly same, even though my friends and I play it with our own home rules, there's just other things we can be doing. Half of us don't even play actual cards because nobody wants to spend 600 dollars on a card that we all agree can't use it's effect negations. If I may recommend a fun older card game, look into something called "L5R CCG". L5R stands for Legend of the Five Rings. It basically different clans in a fantasy Japan that fight each other for dominance. The Game is definitely complicated when you first look into it. However it's a blast once you get the hang of it. I think you can get a learn to play set for less than $50s. I think it's called "A Matter of Honor." It comes with the lion clan, and crab clan. Each clan does its own thing pretty well. Sadly it's been axed for almost a decade now. But the cards are cheap, and all/most of them can be found on Oracle of the Void's website. A personal recommendation, and very fun if interested in giving it a shot. Lastly if you use oni's in your spider military deck, yes you are playing them right XD

I quit modern Yugioh and just play retro formats. Not interested in playing what Yugioh is right now. I can’t take another format of just Snake-Eye.

Yugioh has cancer right now, The lack of alternate formats, horrible prizing ,and game mechcanics is what is causing it. To be honest I also want to add every time I hear about a YCS always having record numbers in attendence, There are no charts any where to compare the numbers in between events from each region. I feel someone should really post what the true attendence numbers are and let us compare between each YCS from the previous. I feel Yugioh needs a reformat of the game mechanics, rules , and adding new formats to the game it's self will help out. I still have some of my old decks and will play for fun. But going to a YCS is not really worth it at all. Those are my two cents.

@SoloFan87 to add on to this, the game is difficult to teach to someone brand new to the game. Even if you are a novice, basic things can still trip you up. Even pros get things as simple as timing wrong. Like costs not triggering certain effects. Think lightning vortex and dark worlds. When teaching someone these card rules, you look at the cards and what they lines up. However in actually they don't. Not to mention new cards games that are taking over quickly. I'd be lying if I said anything other then Lorcana has been taking my locals by storm. Places aren't stocking yugioh anymore, and are instead stocking One Peace, Lorcana, and Digimon. It's no longer the big three tcgs, but instead, it's now 6 at least. Yugioh isn't going down literally as fast as the titanic, but if things don't improve sometime soon then it will meet the same fate eventually.

@@Oceanaire039 Thank you for adding this as well. I will be honest I haven't looked at One Piece, Lorcana or Digimon. I do play MTG Commander as well but the Casual EDH not CEDH. Once again thank you for adding those thoughts as well.

@SoloFan87 no problem, and yeah I've looked into mtg. However the deck idea I liked isn't the greatest. Green Eldrazi XD. But I collect a few things in MTG here and there. I'm starting to get into Lorcana, but I'm not good at it. It is fun and worth looking into if you have like $50's and a friend to play against. Biggest recommendation I can give is to look into the rules here on KZbin (most tutorials are like 10 minutes long, and pretty self-explanatory), then look into the different ink colors. I like ruby and amber. Some of the rules are similar to MTG actually. Summoning sickness, "tapping" to play cards from your hand, 20 life in mtg & in Lorcana it's first to 20, flying can only be countered by flying or reach & in lorcana specific cards can only be targeted if they share a keyword, and a few other things like that. You might actually be able to pick it up faster then me honestly XD Have a good one, and hopefully snow-covered lands stop being in the meta XD

It sucks even more since Casuals don't really have any space to play. You'd think Locals would be fine, and for some locations, it's can be; But A) That's very dependent on where you're situated. B) It only takes one guy playing anything competitive to ruin the fun.

I'm very indifferent when it comes to formats because I try to adapt & compromise with my OCD. they only thing I REALLY have a problem with is the overpricing of cards. Dragon Master Magia, is so far from what I've seen, is the most expensive card out there, & I need it but can't afford it

Yugioh back then was a lot like yugioh today. You still had negates, (Solemn Judgment, 7 tools of the bandit, horn of heaven, fiendish chain) You still had searchers (Sangan, Giant Rat, Sonic Bird) You still hand non-destruction removal (Lava Golem, DD warrior Lady) Hand Traps (Honest, Gorz, Kalut) The most appealing thing of playing yugioh back then is getting to play past turn 3, the slow burn of the duel & getting to draw into your deck for that "heart of the cards" moment that turns the game around for you. Personally, I prefer High Power formats, but those always end with Konami hiting the banlist button. I say, "Fuck it." Let us play full power dragon link, full power chaos, full power tearlament, full power kashtira. I Guarantee you, Snake Eyes won't be the best deck after that. & Yes, I am definitely looking forward to adding the Fiendsmith Engine into my Dark World Deck.

I have mixed feelings. I love all the mechanics and cool stuff you can do with decks. All the support we’ve gotten for archetypes that were horrible. But at the same time, the competitive side has really been rough. It’s the same thing now. One card combo and hand trap spam the rest. If your deck can’t do that. You can’t compete. Older meta decks were strong asf but still beatable with the right know how and experimentation. Doesn’t feel like that right now

I think your framing of "back then and now" is too vast. My favorite time in Yu-Gi-Oh was Fall/Winter 2016 because I felt like you could play whatever and do well against the top decks. They had weaknesses, where as 2021 and onwards, it feels like Komoney wants to remove the idea of consistency issues and make every deck be like Witchwitches, but if half the deck were Ice Bells and the other half be Snow Bells.

@dhantefranklin336 I lost interest about the mid point of Xyz's. However I kept my head around yugioh for a while during this time. I heard that was a good time to play it. I prefer Edison format, but we all have points that we like. Personally now I play L5R (Legend of the Five Rings), I'm looking into Lorcana, and modern yugioh with house rules with my friends. 20k life points, no negating effects, no one/two card combos (or just end your turn after doing one), and no hand traps. It's amazing how fun the game is, when you remove these elements. You can actually play the game, and it's fun. Lastly I did love the "Komoney" line XD

Links were really not that good to begin with but they totally made some decks AND CARDS irrelevant so as long as they don't go down that route again I'm okay but totally wiping cards that target defense pos monsters and they cant even be flipped face down. (Ghost tricks and other decks and cards relied on that.)

The reason Yugioh players that still compete like tier 0 formats is because they don't like playing Yugioh. They like playing solitaire for a nintendo switch. lol But I've been saying and will keep saying it. Old Yugioh and Alternative Formats > New Yugioh. The game has never been fair but at least there's a ton of actual fun you can have with old school Yugioh.

Dragonmaids was like 2019, Dragons havent looked like that for over 5 years now, hell the new era stuff looks great art wise, go look at the Fallen of Albaz Dragons like Mirrorjade.
