I will never forget 4th July 1996 when Carrier Air Wing 8 on board USS JFK (CV67) made a port visit to Dublin bay. I was living in my parents house on the south side of the city when my Uncle (who was living in the center of town) phoned our house to tell me that he had just witnessed a flyby by the air wing - all I could hear in the backround were car alarms and dogs barking! With that piece of news, I ran outside of my parents house to see two F14’s, two F18’s, two Prowler’s and one Hawkeye with tail hooks down fly down my road at about 1,500 ft. Made my day!!! Kind of fitting for me too because my Grandfather presented President Kennedy with an honorary degree from University College Dublin on 28th June 1963.

@Wick98765 жыл бұрын
Smaller carriers are more expensive per airplane. It's the old super battleship problem: bigger ships are more efficient so there's a pressure to have just one super battleship, but then it's in dock while needing to cover multiple stations. The inverse is the Chinese junk problem: having all stations covered with some reserve for losses is important but pushes ship size down until they are individually useless.

as much as i find these fascinating, i think we have the bases covered as a nation. i think we need to start building a healthy merchant fleet again. why do all our goods have to ship on foreign bottoms. we can very well subsidize a merchant fleet with US mariners just like other nations do. we are subsidizing this whole shipbuilding empire with taxpayer money already , dont tell me we can build an 18k teu container ship.
