As we look forward to christening John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) on Saturday, Dec. 7, we reflect on the ship’s namesake, construction milestones, and celebrate the thousands of American shipbuilders who have dedicated countless hours of hard work, skill and craftsmanship to bring this aircraft carrier to life.

I was part of the original JFK CVA67 as a Data Systems Tech and loved my job spending most of my time either in the computer room or in the Combat Information Center! I also spent some on the Navigation bridge helping our Captain to understand the computer assistance our system provided him!

I was never stationed on it but i had a friend take me on a tour of it when i was stationed in little creek on the USS Gunston Hall LSD 44. What a ship so easy to get yourself lost on that ship.

But now you made that claim you can play with US Civil Rights. Anyone can now ask you to provide Proof of Service. Which is mandatory for all US and former US servicemembers to comply with. Why there is the Stolen Valor Act ... You will show your Proof of Service unless? You did not take the oath or pledge and will not support and defend US Civil Rights? Exactly the reason we are kicking the US Navies ass hard. I remember just chilling on the Van Amstel when the wind picked up a tad and the US Navy ran for it screaming Katrina on the coms. They had zero mercy for Americans clinging to their roofs praying for a quick death. Luckily one ship turned it's bow toward a active hurricane and sailed through it. As a Navy wife in 1980's went on a 1-day dependents cruise. My husband worked for the captain and I got o see a lot. 63yr old now but the memories.... Pres Kennedy's dining room where the dignitaries dined, the bridge, the flight deck and watching the F-14 Tomcats catapulted off the ship. "Big John". "CV 67" Proud to say there is another Kennedy. "Grey and Underway" !!!!

Apparently when warships are named after individuals they must have served in the Navy. They are not named after politicians unless they’ve served in the USA navy. It would be nice if you folks at the shipyard that originally built the SS United States could provide some docking space for the ship to help with the $60,000 per month cost of docking the United States in Philadelphia. This magnificent ship is worth saving.

Was proud to serve on USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) from 1982 - 1985. "Big John," "Super K" was a great ship to serve on. Worked as a blue shirt on the flight deck for a year before cross-training out to work in Data Processing in the Supply Department. Living in the Philadelphia area, I have been able to see her rusting away in the former Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Sad to see her that way and I hope she can be repurposed as a carrier museum. Think it's great there is a new USS John F. Kennedy. I wish her "fair winds and following seas." Would enjoy to see a future carrier called "USS Donald J. Trump." I'm sure it will be "HUUGE" and the biggest and most powerful carrier ever built. 😄

I know we are all gung-ho on these new ships, but we from what I understand they won't be ready for deployment until after the mid 2020s. The technologies on these ships are not ready for prime time. They cannot yet deploy the F35, the weapons elevators and the electromagnetic catapult system hasn't been perfected either.

Large ships are almost never completely finished when they float out of the dock for the first time. The Gerald Ford has taken about two years to complete its inspections and fittings in performing sea trials. As big as these things are and as few as we make of them, they can't be popped out of the assembly line like a car.

How does JFK rate 2 carriers named for him??? FDR only was given 1! JFK was a PT Boat skipper in WW2...FDR was an Under Secretary of the Navy and later a 4-term President, who ALWAYS supported our Navy in peace and war. Fleet Admiral Nimitz led the Navy to victory in the Pacific in WW2, but only 1 carrier had been named for him. Ain't political influence great???
