I agree, i think the impact of traditional and tribal music is very similar to modern electronic trance music, especially if there's no singing involved, only music. They both take you to another world just with the rhythm, melodies, instruments and/or electronic sounds. Music without singing is more intense because you get to create your own world, and you forget the music is made by a human, it feels otherworldly.

I live in Pennsylvania, in the SW where the Whiskey rebellion happened, where a young George Washington watched Tennicarison murder a group of French Surveyors, which promoted the French and Indian War (Seven Years War). Where General Braddock lay in a grave along a road. I grew up in the midst of where history happened. My ancestors were here at that time, settling the frontier. This is my favorite song and always moves me tremendously when I think about this movie and think about what life was like for those very brave souls in this very wild and rough place.❤

Indeed, there are few things that common with Mongolians and Indians 1.Scalping 2.Tribal system. I belong to sharnuud tribe for example, while Chinggis was Kyan tribe which was one of 3 ruling clans of Hun empire. The last thing, don't get angry on me, is alcoholizm. But difference is, we Mongolians got beards, and especially in central Mongolia we have groups that children in little age got white-blonde hair and green-gray eyes, funny thing is their hair turns black when they grow up, but green or grey eyes remain same. Maybe we got some blood from now extinct "white skinned blue eyed barbarians" mentioned many times in ancient chinese histories. Search Yuezhi in wiki for more details about this Asian white people, maybe they were related to Ainu, white aborigines of Japanese island... BUT, MAIN THING HERE IS THIS MUSIC IS AMAZING!! :)

It is a sad and magnificent film, but it's based on a fictional book, Selena, the Mohicans are alive and well in Wisconsin, and there are said to be more American-Indians alive today than ever before, arguably due to modern developments in hygiene and food, dwelling and other technology.

I wish there was a mod to add this to Skyrim.. I mean how awesome would it be to just roam around with this on your way to killing off a dragon or bandits or werewolves or vampires or leprechauns... scratch the last one but you get my drift.

Actually, there is. There is a mod for Skyrim which adds some other atmospheric musics to game. It's Part 1 includes The Gael in taverns and outlands. You can find it in Steam Workshop.

When we were little, my sisters and i used to dance around to this song in the kitchen, (which had the most space) and we would climb on top of stools and twirl across the linoleum, pretending that we were Native Americans, climbing up mountains and dashing through rivers, doing nothing in particular but enjoying the song and being our own, crazy selves

@Kalamere S "Gael" does not refer only to Irish. We Scots are Gaels too - hence the language of the Highlands & Islands is called "Gaelic"!!! And FYI the composer Dougie MacLean is a Scotsman - born in Dunblane in central Scotland (where Andy Murray also grew up...).

The Irish refer to their native language as gaelic also. Irish Welsh and Scots are all gaelic peoples. Celts too but thats part of a broader regional culture.

I have been enthralled by the movie since first seeing it and particularly by The Gael and love playing it on my harmonic harmonica. It becomes haunting when played slowly in single notes and sounds like a bagpipe lament. It will stay with me forever.

Alpha Co. 2nd Platoon, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade was the unit I graduated from at Sandhill, Fort Benning in 2013 to become a US Army Infantryman. This is the music they played when our company marched on to the field to “turn blue” and receive our Infantry Chord. Luckily my dad, a Vietnam Infantry vet with the 101st, got to put my Blue Chord on officially making me an Infantryman. I loved this piece before I joined, I love it even more now. Very emotional

Samuel Lord True, I don't claim that it was 100% bad (as I sit in a heated room in australia on a chinese made computer, listening to dutch music and drinking african coffee) - but I do think that a lot was lost in industrialisation- much of our sense of community, spirituality and connection with the land for example. It would be nice to have those things back... AND keep my computer and coffee

It is interesting that the women comment on the looks of the man but for me, the draw is the bound between the father and son, the warfare and sacrifice. I don't expect women to understand these, except for sacrifice as they too sacrifice. But to fight along side your father and him dying is strangely honorific and definitely tragic. When the movie came out my son was an infant and I thought of me and my father....almost 30 years later my father has passed and my son is as old as I was when the movie released....so in my mind it is now me and him and I am passing the torch to him as I pass away. It is weird how a scene in a movie, coupled with a song, can have such strong emotional meanings for someone. This song always brings tears to my eyes and a visceral sense of honor, commitment, and sacrifice.

You get it, my friend. This film and the soundtrack evoke the bond I have with my sons and daughter. They are all fine, well balanced young adults now, completed university and yet still very good outdoorsmen, all can shoot, cook, fish, hold a job and sit with me watching classic movies like this and talking about the themes over a glass of red afterwards.
