Today we are taking a look at the charming "Zoo Series" of Gallienus, a curious commemorative series struck during some of the worst years of the third century crisis.

What's your favorite site to find ancient coins that's a trustworthy site I want to get some of these zoo coins, I own two ancient coins a long time ago a gold Byzantine coin that I think now is well over $1,000 and a Polish coin from 1240 something.

@classicnumismatics Do you have a recommendation for a vendor on Ebay to buy such coins. I am completely new to this hobby. I love the rich history of these coins. Lots of stories to tell.

I've posted it before, but I'll post it again: I love love love the Gallienus coins. They are SO crappy. And that crappiness is a direct result of the history. You can SEE the history with the Gallienus coins. The fact that almost every coin you showed has a massive crack in it (with just a few exceptions), and only a couple are actually round. The hallmark of the Gallienus coins, the sheer phoning-it-in quality. Yet, all that said, the zoo series is *really* cool. I have a bunch of Gallienus coins (of course), but none of them are zoo coins. I really need to get a set of those.

What a lovely series! Its surprising that someone cared enough to create unique designs for these crude inflation coins instead of churning out sloppy Virtus reverses

Thanks for posting about this. I had the Apollo coin, but didn’t know any of the history about why it was produced.

Very cool- I wasn't aware of this 'series' of coins; and I actually happen to have one! I just bought it because of the bull on the reverse as I wanted an example of how Roman art depicted a bull; and now I'm pleased to know what exactly it is, why it was struck and that it's one of the less-common ones ;) Thanks!

I have some of the Zoo reverses. I like them because they are both interesting and mainly inexpensive to collect. Finding one in XF without a crack is challenging.

This should get you started on the worst periods of the crisis of the third century and its coinage. Once you assemble a sizeable set, its so lovely to see the degredation of the quality under Gallienus and Claudius, and the sudden vast improvement under Aurelian and the subsequent emperors.

I have found three zoo issues in uncleaned lots. They are surprisingly difficult to find and often are of such poor quality that you can't even see any of the legend. That said, they are still a great treat and they make up a key part of my Gallienus timeline.

From the reign of Gallenius, I just have an Alexandrian tetradrachm, not much larger than a usual size Antonian, that looks completely devoid of silver. It's not surprising that you see a good portrait of Gallenius on the front and an eagle on the back. I have other Egyptian coins, and even the Ptolemaic ones have the same eagle on a lightning bolt, (or whatever). So, Egyptian coins are easy to recognise!

Some reverses are among the most common 3rd century Roman coins.... some others are almost impossible to get... but at least a set representing the 12 officinae of the mint of Rome is still relatively easy to assemble

I really enjoy your videos, they're well presented and interesting, though it would also be interesting to see some recorded prices for some of the rarer types rather than just saying they're expensive xD After all, expensive for some collectors is a few hundreds, while for others it's thousands or tens of thousands.

Whats the point of doing that if in 5 years from now prices will be completely outdated?
@danielcadwell9812
@danielcadwell9812 11 ай бұрын
@@ClassicalNumismaticsYou could just say "price as of this year" and then people would have context in 5 years as to how the price changed.
@thatoneguy7191
@thatoneguy7191 11 ай бұрын
Unless these rare expensive coins suddenly become common and cheap, I don't think it will make much of a difference if you're 5 years in the future or not. If anything, they're more likely to increase in value and then people in the future will see what these coins used to go for or what a lower end price might be. There's no harm in adding auction records to informative videos like these :)@@ClassicalNumismatics
