You sir are a one off! All the info you impart to us fans is priceless. Can you tell me how big an area the club have to work with? so I can get some idea of what they have to play with, we've got 70 acres here on the farm with about 8 around the house takes 4 hours to mow the lawn! The diagrams you have are stunning and look like another big step forward for our club, do you still think a brand new training ground would take priority over expansion of the ground which would add to income? Not long before they start announcing new sponsorship deals I hope and if/when we make the champions league this season the gates will be opened. We need you on the clubs advisory group, chairman at least.

Not a Newcastle fan but this came up in my recommendations, interesting video. From looking at google earth I don't see any real reason (as a transport planner) why that section of Strawberry Place couldn't be closed, especially the way transport schemes are going in cities now. It removes what looks to be a rat run (Gallowgate clearly takes most of the traffic), will reduce traffic considerably around the stadium and that residential area. It also allows for better placemaking in that Metro station park area and creates a proper sustainable transport area/hub (Metro/bus stops/rental bikes etc). On 'planning balance' it would make sense to close the road and allow for better design. Also, noted in some comments below about whether a capacity of 62k is enough. As a west ham fan, our capacity is way too much. we sell out most games but the support is a bit diluted from what we had at Upton Park. The real money to be made will be from the corporate boxes in that new stand rather than the 10k extra seats, so as a fan, it's about making sure they get that balance correct. You can argue that part of Newscastle's product is the fanbase. also, aside from the mad scaffolding (for lack of a better term!) design of the roofs (and its resultant shadow), I think that 'smaller' stand you have really gives St James' Park a cool feature. it would be a shame to lose that to accommodate an eventual 'mirrored' stadium.

@@stevenpryce7808 I think even with 80,000 it would never be 1/2 to 3/4 full. We have a massive waiting list for season tickets which if we could meet would improve the atmosphere and would generate even better income (which we need to get over ffp restrictions, which are going to get tighter). I think any remit given to architects should include maximising the acoustics of the ground to amplify the noise. I am sure there are creative ways to get more than 62,000 without relocating the ground, needs to be well thought through and done once.

Brilliant as always Eddie. Great research. Surely imo the easiest answer would be to build an entirely new stadium just a few hundred yards further back into Leazes park? I know you have previously said that’s impossible but I think I also saw a friend of leazes park saying she would be open to the idea? Would such a move be possible in your opinion especially if the owners regenerated the rest of Leazes park as part of the deal? That way the existing site of st James could be turned into a fan park and smaller stadium for the academy and the women’s team?

That’s some span for a cantilever roof. More likely to move the Gallowgate stand further back and lengthen the East and West Stands in the process. Makes it better for the odd occasion we host the Rugby.
@TynesideLife
@TynesideLife Жыл бұрын
Couple of major problems with ‘stretching’ the stadium footprint. It’ll require almost a half stadium rebuild. That’ll require a temporary playing stadium, which there isn’t one. It’ll move the Gallowgate and Leazes further away from the pitch as that’ll have to move too. You can only move it back a few metres anyway, because of the road. Seems a non starter David and certainly nothing that the experts I talk to have mentioned, since you mention it to be a likely option.
@davidanderson2838
@davidanderson2838 Жыл бұрын
@@TynesideLife the sketch looks like the stadium footprint is being stretched anyway and it is straddling the road behind the Gallowgate or am I missing something? The sketch suggests the Gallowgate stand will be deeper than the existing Leazes end which, if it is a cantilever roof, would probably put it in the Guinness Book of Records. The superstructure to support it would be colossal. Whatever they do I can’t see them doing anything worthwhile to the stadium without sacrifices being made for a number of season ticket holders if they want to remain on the same site. It’s a very interesting challenge.
@TynesideLife
@TynesideLife Жыл бұрын
@@davidanderson2838 David, in the video I explain that this is an opinion video, based on a myriad of conversations and personal research. It’s not an architectural drawing and shouldn’t be viewed with too critical an eye. It’s for illustration purposes only, to demonstrate what it would ‘roughly’ look like. Nothing has been stretched however and the stadium is within its current footprint, other than a cantilever stand added, ie the Gallowgate hasn’t been moved back. The illustration and video hasn’t been produced to invite a debate about its design, as in principle, it’s a valid option. I only counter your initial comment as it creates some significant problems, that wouldn’t be caused with a ‘mere’ cantilever extension. Thank you for sharing your views 👍🏻

Going by the original plan in 2007 it looks like the easiest solution would be to build the foundations beyond the metro station which would result in a massive structure. It means rather than fill the metro station in wpuld concrete and move it they obviously avoid that problem altogether. It would also add way more extra seats. However that might mean the current gallowgate might have to be demolished which is not favourable. Aesthetically it would be a nightmare because this structure dwarf the east stand even more, however some could argue in a time of boring souless new builds it would add to the stadiums character. The gallowgate west corner is probably the most tricky (underneath sir bobby robson statue) as that has the most of the metro underneath, would the gallowgate west corner be included in the plans? Remember the opposite corner holds about 7000 (current GWC only 2000) so leaving out the GWC would cost a potential of 5000 seats. Also in 2007 there was a member of the coucil who had concerns prior to planning permission and was clearly opposed to it, i believe he is still on the council. However with euro 2028 on the horizon id expect some decisions to be fast tracked in the next 12 months whether it's feastible long term financially. The PIF will want return on any investment .

Hi Phil, before I can discuss your points more fully I just need to establish couple of points. I study this topic for a living now and I’m unaware of a plan to expand the Gallowgate in 2007? There was method in the madness making the gallowgate have an even bigger footprint than the milburn and leazes. I knew the general consensus was that everyone visioned the gallowgate to be a mirror image of the leazes end to add symmetry but I just went left field and liked the idea of the gallowgate being one continuous single tier with all safe standing, rather than have the vast drop from level 7 seperated by corporate/executive boxes. If you ask me it just wouldn't seem right to have those boxes in one of English football's most famous stands. This was due to large protests and objections. The council had already approved the building of four tower blocks on Strawberry Place before NUFC bought the lease on the land back. Future Gallowgate expansion plans are unlikely to be knocked back for that reason. Plus, the owners will have had ‘in principle’ communication with the council on future plans

if they are clever do a deal with the council to take part of the park buy up land in surounding areas to compensate with exess park in other areas and just move the stadium in to the park by 100m or so to build a new stadium with a roof and 80000 give or take capacity

Everyone? That’s not the issue. It’s an important road for volume traffic through that area. Having it closed for two hours, twice a month for eight months of the year is manageable 👍🏻

The stadium is a security soft target on many levels and vulnerable on all sides. Vehicles of course have access under the Sir John Hall stand snd Milburn stand. Of course the road behind the Gallowgate would be closed during match days as it is now. 👍🏻

It was deliberately designed bigger to accommodate more fans and utilising space without corporate boxes. Of course this is just for illustration purposes to get an idea of what it may look like 👍🏻

Wouldn't it be better to sell the stadium and build a new one (70,000 seats?) on a green field site with transport facilities and an adjoining training complex ? Similar, in some respects, to the Etihad in Manchester......

It's such a shame a ground share for a limited time period isn't possible, that way st James's park could be flattened and rebuilt just like what the spuds did. We are a victim of geography.

Sounds far too complex to me. And the one side can never be developed anyway because of that Georgian terrace. Having a massive stadium next door kind of spoils the beauty of that building anyway. Wouldn't it just be better to build a new state of the art facility along the lines of the Spurs stadium somewhere else in the city . The clubs owned by billionaires fgs. Cost isn't a factor.

@@TynesideLife That made an interesting read, cheers. I'm not from Tyneside, as you've probably guessed, so I'm kind of looking at the situation through pragmatic eyes. My own team, Everton, will shortly be moving to a new stadium (hopefully we'll still be in the Premier league) so I do understand the emotional tug of a traditional home but things are clearly different for NUFC. Best of luck. That's some team you've got up there btw!

Unfortunately, due to a city centre location and being bordered by historical, environmental and other infrastructure, we don’t have the luxury of a beautiful oval stadium. Our city centre location however does provide us with opportunities that all other clubs don’t have. As such, there are significant factors that will inhibit our opportunity to have a lovely aesthetic stadium. We currently have a stadium that is already very lopsided. This Gallowgate expansion illustration is probably the best idea of what things will look like in a few years time. If you’d like to understand more about the St James’ Park topic please take a few minutes to read an in-depth article I’ve wrote on my website 👍🏻 www.tynesidelife.com/post/relocating-st-james-park-is-highly-unlikely-here-s-why

Thank you for your kind and balanced feedback. The club have bought the lease on Strawberry Place for a reason and Amanda Staveley recently announced in a real estate conference in Cannes that they’re now looking for a suitable architect. It seems the future expansion of the Gallowgate will look something like this or perhaps something like they’re planning at the Etihad 👍🏻
