Great video, hats off to the Tynesider for doing something to help. I think the shot at 6:45 gives a bit of a clue about where some of the high street’s problems are coming from - it’s flanked on all sides by main roads, car parks and derelict patches of grass. What’s desperately needed is new residential development surrounding the town centre, to create a customer base of local residents who are able to come and spend their money there.

Good luck to Lee and Louisa ! What a brilliant initiative. The local Council would do well to sit with this couple and see how they can help. It does not have to cost money. A bit of red tape cutting would help. They could maybe find space for a Community hub somewhere.

Bravo sir! As a Geordie Cavalier now residing in Guangzhou China, who was born and grew up in Gateshead Low Fell, this warmed me noodles and Peking Duck no end. Any mention of 'Shepherds' takes me way way back. In it's heyday, Shepherds made Fenwicks look like Open all hours x Do carry on sir x

Haven't seen Gateshead High Street for about 30 years as I've moved away. Although I'd heard it had declined, I am shocked at just how much. Trinity Square looks fab now though. Good on them at the Tynesider for injecting life back into the high street. It is a fantastic idea because so many older people don't feel safe at night but still want to go out. Very impressed with the Railway Quarter because that used to look so dingy and dirty but now it looks bright and welcoming. Can't wait for your next video.

Fabulous video Eddie. Barley Mow born but raised in the Teams until I left to move to West Yorkshire in 86. So sad to see my home town the way it is, but it was declining when I left. Great to see people trying their hardest to raise it's profile when the council should be ashamed of themselves for letting it go. I do get back occasionally, but rarely venture onto the High Street where my Dad used to drink in the pubs and Mam shopped. Coming up in a few weeks to visit Mams final resting place. Maybe a trip into the High Street may be in order.

Excellent upload indeed, & a good interview. What a lovely couple. ( My Mother used to be a barmaid in the Blue Bell pub ) Visiting the area over the years since 1982 it is sad to see the decline which unfortunately is common in the once thriving high streets. Good luck indeed to the new pub owners & will surely say good day on my next visit.

I'm from Sunderland but I lived in Deckham for a few years on Northborne Street and used to love going down town and over to Newcastle. Thanks for starting out at my favourite pub. The Microbus and The Station East are the beating heart of Gateshead which attracts excellent musicians and bands to complement their excellent and very reasonably priced craft beers. As for the southern part of The High Street it needs pulling down and replaced with open spaces which could bring some much needed beauty to this bleak area!

I worked as an engineer on the trinity square project and thought at the time this could suck the life out of the town.Giving everyone the same shiny anodyne version of a town they’ve got elsewhere isn’t gonna bring money to a place. Its character that makes you want to come to a place and that’s formed by generation on generation of people of the place and what they bring to it. The place you didn’t go was the black bull.I regularly run up as it’s something of a legend on the punk scene as much as trillians is on the rock and metal scene and the punk scene is much bigger than people realise(big influence on a lot of current massive bands and the festivals get serious numbers)and Maz that runs the place goes back to the broken doll on westgate rd and has seen them all and still knows most.Great people, should definitely put a bit of a spotlight on them. One of the many varieties that are the spice of life making a place special

The luftwaffe did less damage to Gateshead High Street than the Liebour controlled council has done What needs to be investigated is the £23 million wasted on building a locked up never used car park and the wasteland next to The Sage where the supposedly £90 million original cost of an unwanted or needed music venue in direct competition to The Sage has ballooned to £350 million This invisible venue was supposed to be built and operational this year Gateshead High Street is best avoided, it's literally the dirty back lane leading to the bright lights of the big city

Great video. I'm in Newcastle and not really familiar with Gateshead. I did recognise the Central Bar only because I'm sure it featured in an episode of Vera. 😂

Great video Eddie Sad to see I spent my youth there the pubs were once so vibrant . We know Gateshead council and the MetroCentre killed it dead .

That pub you mentioned - the closed-down bookies - was called the Rector House. It was back-to-back to a pub called the Fox & Lamb on Burdon Street. Is the Tynesider housed in the old Barclays Bank building?

I wouldn’t let Martin Gannon and his team run a bath, never mind a whole borough. Gannon is the worst thing to happen to Gateshead in its history

Rarely ventured into gateshead, very little reason to go when Newcastle had so much more. I did go in the late 80s a few times, and it was rough back then. Not in the high St, but I remember going to a gun shop a few times. Weirdly located in what was probably previously a corner shop on the end of a brick terrace st.

It's the whole country now less shops and more homeless alcoholics etc. Our country is being destroyed by a tyrant narcisist right in front of us and we just watching it happen. Sad really I miss the 90s when everyone was happy and north east was bouncing.

As much as I hate Starmer, and by golly I detest him, he's only been in the job 5 minutes. You might want to consider that all the working class people who kept on voting Tory and therefore austerity are the turkeys who kept voting for Christmas time and time again.

@blindmanB7 So do you believe that Kier Starmer, who has been Prime Minister for less than six months is to blame for this countries woes, and not the thirteen years of a Conservative government before then.
