It is a big rivalry but it just isn’t something we obsess over. Maybe it’s because there are other sports teams in Michigan that have been good and won championships (Pistons, Redwings). Maybe because we have MSU which is also a big rival, albeit not a very competitive one recently. It is always the Buckeye fans who didn’t go to OSU, have no affiliation to the university other than they live in the same state that are the most obsessed. Buckeye fans that didn’t go to OSU talk so much shit. The ones that actually went to OSU are quite civil. Just my opinion obviously.
@richardptison773512 күн бұрын
@@matthewgabbard6415 The commenter above didn't say Michigan fans don't think about the Ohio State rivalry; his point is that the obsession over this rivalry is greater among OSU fans than it is among Michigan fans. The state of Ohio really only has one major state university football program and so OSU represents the entire state whereas the state of Michigan has two Big 10 schools that have to compete against each other and against the Buckeyes. In short, Wolverine fans have to spread their fanatical hatred between two schools whereas Buckeye fans are free to focus exclusively on Michigan.

Fate and my last name (Yost) sent me to the University of Michigan from 1983 to 1987. Steve is correct, the fan base has more to do with these losses than the coach, the team, the administration. I’m convinced this hate (stupid and blind) causes the team, this coach to pucker up.Find something else to do. Stop caring so much.
@kevinjohnston492311 күн бұрын
No, this is squarely on Ryan Day’s psyche. Instead of game planning to the offense’s strengths, he did the one thing that could lose the game because he wanted to show how “tough” he was. That doesn’t work when your O-line is missing multiple starters. Any other average coach would have won that game for OSU.

I had a co-worker who grew up in Ann Arbor and she said that while people in Ann Arbor supported Michigan that they weren't obsessed with it like OSU fans are obsessed with the Buckeyes. It gets real bad here. I have a friend who had to make a court appearance once due to a traffic violation and he showed up to court in a shirt and tie. After the court appearance he and I were walking around and talking and people were telling him "You're wearing Michigan colors" because his tie was blue and yellow. He's not a football fan so he wasn't thinking of football when picking out his tie. At the OSU campus they will put a red X over any Ms on the buildings Many people will not call Michigan by name but simply say "That team up north". Also the way the local media hypes it up here too makes you think that terrible things will happen if Michigan wins the game.

Hi. Lifelong Columbus resident and OSU fan here. The first 11 minutes of this is the most accurate thing I've heard said about this particular game and about Day and OSU fans in general. Local sports radio has been totally unhinged. There are a few sane people, but they're of course downed out by an army of psychotics. I think it is definitely in Day's head, but I don't think he is so stubborn that he can't change and get it fixed. He a pretty bright guy. He just in an insane environment. If the adminstration fires him, I'm almost positive we'll be entering our own Rich Rod/Brady Hoke era down here. People don't know what they have until it's gone. On one of the local sports radio shows today, someone raised the question of whether you'd want Michigan's season this year or OSU's, i.e., crappy record and an Arby's bowl or something but beat your rival, or OSU's season where you lose to your rival but get to play for a national championship, and they were actually having a hard time answering the question. It's so dumb here.

I agree with this. I am friends with many OSU fans and we get along and are civil but inside I think most of them are insane about this. They have carried the rivalry way too far.

Those arguments were valid 2 years ago. We have enough evidence that Ryan Day has the team looking bad in the Michigan game and as underdogs.
@BuckMulligan7211 күн бұрын
@@kevinjohnston4923 Ok. Players have to make the plays. Kickers have to make the kicks. It was a crappy game, but it the kicker makes two short field goals we're having a completely different conersation. Certainly no would be arguing Day should be fired. They would probably be making the opposite argument - that he finally "gets" the rivaly. That he won with "toughness." You know, what a hard-fought game, gritty, Big Ten, three yards and a cloud of dust, and they pulled it out, etc. They'd forget about the play calling. They'd be saying Michigan has the best defensive line in the game and isn't it so great that we pound it down the field and won with grit and toughness. But the kicker didn't make the field goals and Howard threw two dumb picks and so we have to have this insane, hyperbolic argument about how Day doesn't "get" the rivalry. He's from New Hampshire, he's soft, not a leader, etc. It's so dumb.
@kevinjohnston492311 күн бұрын
@@BuckMulligan72 Ryan Day had plenty of time after the missed FGs to open things up and let the offense cook. He’s apparently too stubborn to be rational, so he can’t be trusted to lead this team.

The best play of the game was mullings run in the 4th where he broke tackles and went 20 yards. You could tell that they had his leg or ankle and mullings powered out of it and hurt himself in the process. He was determined to get those yards.

So you really can’t speak for us Michigan fans obsession with beating OSU. You’re a lukewarm fan, just check in when it’s good and cry when things aren’t going well. Ridiculous and 90% of this fan base will take beating OSU over titles any day of the week. You’re that merely 10% that just picks and chooses when you want to be a fan.

He could have went to Michigan, been a 3 time big 10 champ, 4-0 against this beloved state, won a natty, and life long bragging rights in the state of Ohio for a lifetime, but but instead, he’s 0-4, hasn’t won the big 10, probably not going to win the Natty, and last but not least, will be associated with a defense that held Michigan to 13 pts and lost. Ohio, as everyone knows, is a football state, just as Canada is an ice hockey nation. From Pee Wee to Pop Warner to high/prep school to small college to The Big Ten to the NFL. And Ohio State are the equivalent of the Montreal Canadiens - it is quasi-religous in devotion, not merely a game. That being so, good luck trying to change the culture and its' rabid, obsessive desire to quench The Death Star that is the maize and blue invaders from Ann Arbor. No way. 😮 🏉🏈🙏

@thomasb.smithjr.840110 күн бұрын
@donbutts270 Michigan, like a number of places in the U.S., is a good football spectating state. And it is probably in the top third of football player producing regions, as well. But no, it does not produce either in numbers or per capita the amount or quality of football players that Ohio does. In fact, in the North, Michigan probably trails Pennsylvania and might be a touch behind Wisconsin in those realms, too. It likely equals Illinois, West Virginia and is somewhat ahead of Minnesota - and well out paces Indiana, which is a basketball state, of course. Overall, the top football player producing states are Texas, Florida, Ohio and California. In the South, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee probably outpace The Pleasant Peninsula, as well, for that matter.
@Brettwbeyer149 күн бұрын
@@thomasb.smithjr.8401 It's not behind Wisconsin. It's 3rd best in the Midwest, if you consider Missouri but dont consider pennsylvania. If you consider all northern states I'd say about 4th best.

Well you said it in the stats. The team that wins the rushing yardage wins this game. So maybe we can understand why Ryan couldn't abandon it completely or felt he couldn't win without winning that battle. Even with a loaded receiving core . So while both Mark and Steve said he should have been throwing more, its hard to ignore that rushing fact. You also have to give Michigan's defense credit for pressuring Howard continually. Add 2 interceptions by Howard and you can see why they lost their confidence in the passing game as well. The only team to beat the 85 Chicago Bears defense that year? Dan Marino and the Dolphins with quick outlet passing. I remember because I lost $50 on that game! You can't get psyched out in this game. If you can't run the ball then pass and make the adjustments you need. Know your strengths and go back to them when you need to. You also need to have a core identity. Neither obviously happened. Maybe there is something to be said for not having too much talent..
