Joe is very saddened by Peyton's departure, and his performance in the championship game reflects that. He takes a really bad hit, and has to sit out for the rest of the game.

Definitely, all of it was a lot to take in. Sara dying in that accident. Not knowing or being there for Peyton, & missing 8 years of her life. At first he was living a selfish carefree life, but then he had to care for someone other than himself.
