I know this was 3 years ago, recently watched a playthrough of the game, in the case of the armor the hero gets in the tavern, I believe that wasn't the armor mentioned later in the game. The Hero is more or less seeing the world in the eyes of an RPJ, normal animals are enemies, Normal clothes are items they can get. In the RPG part in the intro, the Hero dons the armor he got at the in when the Rainbow is activated. In the actual game, after you activate the rainbow, the Hero puts on Woman's underwear..... The "armor" he got from the dresser... was not armor... it was female underwear. The armor he is in from start to finish, is the cursed armor that is making him see the world around him as the RPG. The logic of why would a powerful armor be in the tavern owner's dresser is silly and the devs knew this, so they show that it wasn't actually armor and make him oddly wear it over his normal armor.

Besides Petscop, another piece of media that I feel resembles Moon w/out its creators saying they were influenced by it, is Wandersong, in which you play a Bard who uses his kindness and music to try and save the world from destruction as a hero goes around killing the gods of that Universe. There's so much about trying to help communities and people, and the hatred and love in all that, the inevitability of tragedy, and the hope that continues anyway, that Moon reminds me of. Moon and Undertale really helped lay some of the foundations for more varied non-fighting adventure games to bloom and thrive.

I think i know why this game did poorly. The game's ending message is to not play video games. I can just imagine the player thinking "Fine if you didn't want me to play you in the first place, I'll just exchange you for a better game! Now what's this Legend of Dragoon?" Perhaps it would have been better if at Continue? "Yes" was the correct option, and it allowed you to play as the "hero" once again. Only this time, you are back at the end of the game and are able to head to the door and, using your superior strength, open it and bring light back to the world in atonement.

I know this has been done more recently, but... I grew up with older games, like Atari, so seeing such an old game exploring a genre that wasn’t overly saturated with games yet is so fascinating and amazing. They already had such a solid grasp that they could turn against it, and I respect that so much.

"Why is it okay for heroes to kill every wild animal that crosses their path?" Because the wild animals are frenzied and attack the hero on sight. This is one of the easiest RPG conventions ever to explain and justify, unlike the "heroes are allowed to burgle peoples' houses scot-free" cliche. First level heroes have only a dozen HP or so? That means those wild, ravening, carnivorous monsters with more than 12 attack power can, will, and frequently do kill and eat ordinary people - the hero, due to his superior stats and equipment, is able to stand up to them and would be _wrong_ to _not_ kill them when given the chance. Quite often (EarthBound, Dragon Quest) these monsters are either under the control of the main villain or are driven into a rabies-like insanity by the villain's indirect influence on the world. The fact that a hero gets enough cash to be able to pay people for room and board (instead of just barging into an inn or house and saying "I'm sleeping here and there's nothing you can do about it" like an actual immoral douchenozzle would) and maintain/upgrade his gear is just a nice bonus. "I was not expecting a game this old to have a time system" Considering both Dragon Warrior 3 and Castlevania 2 used a day/night cycle, the surprising part here is that they keep track of the day of the week as well. I love the touch that your hero in this game actually needs sleep and can die of exhaustion if you keep trying to exert him beyond his limits.
@CGoody5644 жыл бұрын
Your sentiment about killing the creatures entirely missed the point.
@RoninCatholic4 жыл бұрын
@@CGoody564 More like "I understand _this_ story but I disagree with its premise". _Here_ we actually _do_ have foreign creatures who are just innocent and minding their own business being killed by a false surface-level hero (an undead "hero" at that) but not only is this usually the main thing a "subversion" of a JRPG criticizes from the genre, it's the single JRPG genre convention in least need of subversion. Moon does a much better job with its message than, say, Undertale.
@CGoody5644 жыл бұрын
@@RoninCatholic the only way one could say it is the trope that doesn't need subversion is because of all of the assumptions we make as the protagonist/hero, which this is calling in to question. Mechanically it makes sense, but in every other sense it doesn't make any sense. Unless the games lore says a rabies epidemic has been unleashed (it never does), the idea of "evil influence" causing rabid attacks is quite absurd, and most certainly warrants subversion if that is what the creators are going for
@RoninCatholic4 жыл бұрын
@@CGoody564 Why would you think in a world with proven supernatural powers that there isn't a supernatural power that either jacks up wild animals' aggression to unnatural levels or outright mind-controls them? That the only valid explanation is _mundane, real-world_ rabies? Go ahead and play an RPG. Don't buy a weapon, just walk from one town to another. Don't select "Attack", just "Defend" or "Flee" and watch the slimes and living dead actively attempt to murder you regardless of your actions. They are doing this to all other travelers trying to go about their business, such as farmers bringing their food to the market. And for that matter, some monsters are demons, ghosts, skeletons, and the like - things that aren't "innocent wild animals" but visibly-monstrous monsters that can be easily recognized as evil if they act immediately hostile. The "subversion" here is that instead of a single good, mighty hero righteously protecting the weak and innocent from an army of evil monsters under some sort of supernatural spell to jack up their aggression, it's a single marauding monster jacked up by a spell going about and slaughtering non-threatening animals and looting peoples' houses. The "hero" of Fake Moon is every bit 100% the very thing you're decrying as "unrealistic" in baseline RPGs. Narratively, good hero kills evil monsters and saves the day makes sense. It makes ABSOLUTE sense. Mechanically, player has hero kill monsters to gain experience points and money to upgrade himself and fight progressively stronger monsters on a treadmill is fun but has no direct reason to be tied directly to the other. Here though? The game actively withholds/misleads you with the information it presents. The player is shown a world of violent, immediately hostile monsters and friendly NPCs grateful to be saved. Then after playing this, the game says "WELL ACTUALLY THAT WAS ALL A LIE, ALL THOSE THINGS WE FORCED YOU TO DO ARE WRONG AND EVIL" and then depicts a world of the exact opposite: Innocent animals running away from a monstrous suit of possessed armor and people put off by the silent monstrosity chasing down their dogs. YOU MUST DO THIS THING, HERE IS THE JUSTIFICATION HOW DARE YOU DO THIS THING? YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON FOR DOING THIS THING AND IT WAS NOT JUSTIFIED Moon does a much better job of this than most examples of "RPG trope subversion" but again, monsters being evil and a good guy killing them is not in need of subversion and never has been because it's easily, obviously, and logically explained with only a couple minutes' worth of though.
@CGoody5644 жыл бұрын
@@RoninCatholic again, mechanically it makes sense. I didn't argue otherwise (which is why your idea about things actively trying to kill you has nothing to do with what I said). But it doesn't make sense in absolutely any other way, and nothing you said changes that. It just demonstrates my point even further. The only reason you say otherwise is because it's a common trope; not because the trope makes sense generally. It doesn't. To say events are unnatural is just another assumption based on our actual existence, and has nothing to do with the the world of the game. You know nothing of what it natural or not unless the game specifically tells you as such.

I think I realize why a white arrow of all things created the hero, despite the fact that the player and the hero are one and the same. There are a lot of fantastic looking PS1 titles! Moon is no exception, but my personal favorite is Legend of Mana, which is the most beautiful game on the system bar none. So happy it's getting a remaster. Vagrant Story is also mindblowingly detailed and has some AMAZING lighting effects and character design.
