I'm curious about the price, but I'm just not seeing the reason why this would be better than a $4 PicoBoot setup. Yeah it's got Swiss onboard, but we're going to be using an SD card anyway that can have Swiss on it. I like that there's no wires, but with the more difficult soldering that seems to be a wash. Is there some kind of functionality that the KunaiGC can offer that the PicoBoot cannot?
@ArcanineluvsU Жыл бұрын
My first thought… It already doesn’t offer much that Picoboot can’t do, so the price really has to be competitive. The lack of wires is great, as that seems to be the main struggle for a lot of picoboot installs. However, the board is thick and I feel like more people may struggle with bridging the pins accidentally. Just my thought though. It’s great that we are getting more options. I just hope this is competitively priced.
@donoteatmikezila Жыл бұрын
Same. I don't really see the big deal about having onboard memory. It doesn't make it look any cleaner because the SD adapter is already hidden in the bottom expansion port. The end result is the same. Push power button, end up on at Swiss. The trick of changing the boot-up logo is neat, but I mean you won't even see that if you're holding start to end up at Swiss. So what's the point?

Removing that QSB for repairs or reversing the mod also looks like a pain compared to a flex ribbon or plain wires. I feel like you’d need to use a hot air station to get it off, which most people don’t have and even less people have experience with. Picoboot seems much easier in that aspect

@mancloud19 Жыл бұрын
I considered making it thinner but then the KunaiGC itself interferes with the pins of the SP1, as you loose height in your overall setup. That's why I decided (for now) to stick with this height. I tested 0.8mm board (actual is 1.2mm) and it resulted in the KunaiGC board being slightly angled and having contact to the underlying pins

I love being early to these videos. I might be missing something here, but I don't see the benefit of this chip over Pico Boot . As of now Pico is cost efficient, easy to instal with just 5 wires and super customizable. This feels like the same but tackier and with a few extra bells and whistles that ultimately won't ever be used more than once or twice (and we don't even know the final price yet) and the internal memory card is already a thing with the latest versions of Swiss with "Memory Card Emulation". Pretty neat, but unnecesary imo. They came to the game a little too late with the PicoBoot being an option now.

@mohawkmikeandfriends2257 Жыл бұрын
Agreed! There's no way it will be cheaper than a pi pico and at least as of right now it doesn't have any advantage over picoboot as far as features. If saves can be stored to it in the future that would be cool but then again i wont be able to use my saves elsewhere if i use a different console at someone else's house for example. Memory cards are not that hard to find and the quality of 3rd party ones has come up a lot. If this would have come out before picoboot it would have been a hit but picoboot is just too strong at the moment and readily available now. If maybe pico's stock starts to dwindle and they get harder or hyper-inflated by scalpers... ok this would be the easy choice but just because something COULD happen, doesn't really justify it being usefull right now. The other thing that bothers me is availability for the kunaiGC. Sounds like it's exclusively being sold on consoles4you at least at launch (whenever that'll be). They are based out of Switzerland so for us on this side of the ocean in North America, that's going to mean longer delivery times, customs fees, brokerage fees... again, not ideal. It's great to see another player in the mod chip game for our beloved GC's but I'm like most of the comments on here where I'll be passing unless there's some game-changer feature or killer app that is only available on the kunaiGC. Props to @ManCloud for an alternative. I'm sure europeans will snap them up once released but until you at the very least get a NA distributor, stock levels that don't require a waiting list and a features list that are compelling enough I'm sorry to say me and many many other GC modders will be sticking with our picoboots. Looking forward to be proved wrong in the future however.

It seems to be a neat simple-to-install modchip. Nice to have options! This being said you kept mentionning the internal memory will be in the future able to create virtual memory card, which sure is neat but kind of redundant with Swiss itself that can do that with any kind of storage attached
@davidcameron648 Жыл бұрын
Not redundant at all. Swiss' memory card emulation cannot use a storage device that's being used to load games (and the last time I checked, there couldn't even be any game ISOs stored on it). So, to use Swiss to load games from an SD card adapter and utilize the memory card emulation, you would need two SD cards and the adapters to use them. The "built-in Swiss" feature is actually not that great of a "pro" for the modchip. In fact, Swiss gets updated regularly enough that you would want a new version on your SD card, which you have to set up anyway since the on-board memory is obviously not anywhere large enough to hold even a single game. It's literally saving us from a drag-and-drop action from the Swiss release zip file onto the SD card, (possibly) followed by renaming it. Picoboot (PB) does all that KunaiGC (KGC) does already. If one uses PB and does not want Swiss to auto-load like KGC, just assign it to a button. PB also supports custom boot logos via flippyboot (basically chainloading bootloaders). Does KGC require Swiss to be installed onto the onboard memory (huge "con" if so)? Or will KGC auto-load newer versions of Swiss on the SD card? (PB just requires Swiss to be named IPL.DOL or some other relevant "button-name" DOL file). The only "pro" I see for now is that the QSB is nicely made (but I do worry about bridging neighboring connections due to the copper edges that you pointed out). Hopefully the onboard memory capabilities will be a big surprise with future updates.

I don't personally think the thickness of the QSB is an issue. It leaves some room for error. Flex cables would be far less forgiving and are easier to damage with the soldering iron during installation. My negative is that this doesn't have to be two separate boards. It can be done with just one eliminating the need for two separate parts. All that being said, this easily one of the simplest mods I've observed. It can be accomplished with amateur-level soldering skill -- mainly because of the QSB's thickness. Only thing left is price. If it comes in under $100USD, this will be a nearly perfect mod. Tito - I love your GameCube coverage, but I've got one major gripe... You always say that you *need* an SD2SP2 to launch games from Swiss. This is blatantly false. Not every console has a serial port populated on its motherboard, and therefore are incompatible with an SD2SP2. However, an SD Gecko performs exactly the same (FMV Frame drops and all), and is compatible with every cube that has ever been made. Sure, it takes up a memory card slot, but personally I find that far more convenient, as I don't need to flip my cube or remove the GC Player to access the SD. I imagine a lot of people don't know this, and if they only get their knowledge from your coverage, they may assume their console is unfit for modding, or maybe end up buying parts before even thinking to check. And before someone says it - yes, you can solder to the pads where the serial port would have been and regain the functionalities, but if you know that then you're already not who I'm trying to vouch for. Thanks for the coverage of this mod! Definitely seems like a higher end power-user mod, but perhaps it'd be worth adding to my setup sometime. I think for most, picoboot is gonna be hard to beat, but I can see massive potential in this one for the diehards out there!

In future this could also be used to do bios based region patching by simply injecting an NTSC BIOS into a pal console and the other way round.

Con: how the heck do you update Swiss that is preloaded onboard? Why was this not mentioned? Other than that love the vid as always

I love your mods. I have a Game Cube and i want another for restore and mod!!

I'm glad there's options for modding the gamecube, but this one feels (and I hate to say this) a little bit pointless. With the picoboot it's usable for more than just the GC, so if you decide you want to revert back to stock, you still have a pico for projects like a pico flasher for the 360 or any of the other endless use cases for a pico, plus it's dirt cheap (usually) This in comparison? I don't know, it just doesn't really add anything to the table that other mods don't already offer, the qsb is a nice idea, but poorly executed imo, and it's telling that Tito's soldering looked like arse in comparison to his usual quality, and I can only presume it's the qsb making the job harder than it needs to be. I don't like being negative towards mod creators, they put in a shit tonne of work for comparatively little reward, and dunking on people far cleverer and talented than me is in very poor taste, but I have to call it as I see it, and unless this turns out to be incredibly cheap I just don't see the value :(

I watch a lot of these videos and get really excited until I try to find the hardware featured in them. They are rarely available. I'd love to install the Dual or Pluto HMDI mods but they just aren't out there. So after watching this and the Picoboot video, I'm leaning toward the Pico since you can actually get those. I understand this product isn't available yet but if I miss out early on - that's that.

I think you need like 10 old consoles of each type in hand just in case new mod is released.

I find modchips fascinating, but can't see myself ever bothering with one or even older consoles. Available emulators and ROMs are too good nowadays, and upscaling options mean that you can run retro games in native 4K60, often with texture mods. The money and time you spend on classic hardware is better invested into computer hardware. If I'd kept my old consoles and games vs selling them I wouldn't have had the money for a $5K+ top end, watercooled PC that can run any console (bar the very newest ones) with every game ever made, even the rarest region specific ones

I think to have heard that the 16MB of onboard storage could be used to house other software. However it was only briefly touched on and I might have imagined it.
@mancloud19 Жыл бұрын
No, you're absolutely right and it already holds two softwares: the KunaiLoader (iplboot based application) as well as swiss.

The nasty castellated edges can be a problem if they introduce mechanical interference. Certain PCB fabs produce them better than others. In the past, I've cleaned them up manually under a microscope with a sharp hobby knife.
@HaralHeisto Жыл бұрын
I was thinking those looked like the PCB fab made them as plated through holes, then the large hole was cut out afterwards with the blade for that tearing apart the vias. They're probably come out better if they specced drilled holes only with solder pads, no vias.

Man, I click faster than the speed of light. Hahaha... Awesome as awlawys Tito. I installed the Picoboot on my GC DOL 101 and works amazing. This one I don't know if I takle it when I get a DOL 001. The part of soldering the chip legs is always a pain for me to do and end up with bridges. :( But its amazing the potential this new chip has. Looking for more of it in the future. :)

The picoboot is a tricky install. This is a better solution if priced ~$20. I had to buy $15 26 AWG which you don't need for this install. Picoboot took me 2 attempts to get right. It may have worked on my 1st attempt using single core 22awg but my sd2sp2 was likely the issue and 22 gauge wire is way too thick. I had to add some solder to my sd2sp2 contacts to get my GC to recognize it in swiss and it's a nice n snug fit

the pico feature set is so similar and so cheap. the price is really the main factor if this is viable
@AstrophageOfficial Жыл бұрын
price, but also this looks way easier and will be accessible for more people by how it easy it looks to install. plus, no wire routing, no mounting the pico and no having to install swiss

It's cool, but I'll stick with my PicoBoot. If I ever want to sell my GameCube, I can much more easily unsolder a few wires one by one, than unsolder multiple legs at once without a heat gun. The debug menus and custom startup features are pretty cool.
@rainbowdooche6957 Жыл бұрын
you're 100% right on the money about that a Pico is going to be 1000x easier to remove than this thing, but, I'm also 100% positive a GC with a Pico pre-installed is going to make it more valuable than a stock lol
@Sacren365 Жыл бұрын
@RainbowDooche Some people don't want it, but I likely won't be selling my GameCube anyways. Even once I dump all my games and migrate them to the WiiU, I'll still want it around. I've had for as long as I can remember, and it's from my father, so I don't think I would feel good about getting rid of it.
