I know this will sound cheesy, but I really, really like the character development, as tiny as it was. Especially the moment when Cass is going waaay over the line with his rant about "wasting the wish" and out of all characters it's Gary, the dorky dude, who hands the situation like a master with his switch of seats and casual "So what happend next?", instantly relaxing the rest. And how Cass returns in the end but instead of just "yeah, I'm sorry", he's really struggeling to admit he's a jerkass, but does so nontheless. Or how there is no romantic plot tumor and Joanna just hangs with Kevin instead it pointlessly and needlessly turning into plot cliche. And many other small touches here and there. I guess such things made the story really good and created an entertaining film about gaming and players, instead of just a slapstick parody full of cliches.

One small thing I loved about this that I'd like to point out is how nice Leo and Gary were to Jo at the end. I can't handle people angrily yelling at me, and a tirade like what Cass did probably would have given me a panic attack if I had been on the receiving end of it. Jo, while not like that, was clearly shaken. Gary moving to sit next to her and both of them being sure to tell her how much they enjoyed gaming with her were really nice touches.

I've never been a gamer (I tried to play Mist...Myst?..once with my nephew, does that count?), but I love this movie. No clichéd movie franchise or fanboy BS, a well crafted female character, an oddball cast of characters that aren't portrayed as social cripples, healthy, hearty, sexuality, great comic writing, rapport, and timing. AND IT'S SMART! How many movies or TV features of any budget about can claim such a list of qualities? This is a wonderful movie for any fan of low-budget, independent film making. Decided to check out random D&D related videos, and...Wow. At first, the length kind of turned me away, but I decided to stick with it. It was awkward at some points, but this is a movie about nerds. It's going to be awkward. All the references and clever little things like the Bard (Can't remember his name, I'll call him Red Shirt) couldn't recall the lore on the mask, but his face lit up as you could hear the sound of dice being rolled. Sure, the production value may not have been the highest, but honestly, it really doesn't need to be. It was easy to relate to, and all in all, I highly enjoyed it. I will most definitely be buying this as soon as I can.

+Shane Powell While true, the DM has to know their players well enough to create the players craft a story that best matches the players.
@Texsoroban9 жыл бұрын
true, but at the same time it is up to the DM to challenge his players with things outside their realm of experience. As well sometimes one person in a party can skew the experience for the whole group. a case in point occurred once in a game I was in. There was one guy that just wanted to acquire glory and loot for himself and damn the rest of the crew. When the DM crafted a purely "role playing' scenario for the group once, everyone but he enjoyed it greatly, but this guy made such a stink about the whole deal that we finally had to exclude him from the game. If we would have let him continue to define the narrative it would have meant a less enjoyable playing experience for the rest of us.
@Texsoroban8 жыл бұрын
A DM that lacks the imagination to account for that is a poor DM. Power and wealth beyond your level is a quick ticket to TPK.

A top quality dark comedy written by a keen judge of human character. What these guys did on a shoestring should shame all the multi--million dollar epics that trade depth and clarity for overweighted special effects budgets. D&D tabletop gaming (starting in '79) revived my interest in swords and sword play to the point where now, at 60, I am a fairly competent swordsman (with katana or no dachi) . . . creating an interesting parallel with one of the protagonists' experiences. A great project, a great flick, and thanks for posting!

If it didn't already make you shudder when games like World of Warcraft are called RPG, this will do the job. I so regret not having found connections to roleplayers early-on. Nothing but full-blown passionate RP will empower my spirit. The story writing in this movie is very good. It conveys high virtue. Even gave me own ideas and made my mind wander off a few times. Also, the ragequit scene of one of the players is very familiar to me. How people believe they know so well how things are supposed to be, but have no clue; cannot comprehend high virtue, and thus can sour the atmosphere. You usually need the combined power of a group to counter the casting of such an anti-magic field.
