I love your approach to seeing gamines. As a petite woman with elongated legs, but short torso and short arms and a very strong, but compact frame that also has curves, I knew I was gamine, but found Kibbe's subtypes very confusing and restrictive. Your approach at looking at the whole person and what each individual's beauty and personality calls for is really cool.

@@lybo1581 First of all i think we should consider height, i am 165cm, (5'4" for those who use the Imperial system) Because i have more of yang skeleton with broad and blunt bones/ cheekbones/jawline and i can handle some heavier fabrics and oversized/a little bit deconstructed clothes I fought I was a Natural! But then if i went full natural with clothing it just didn't fit right... It seemed off Then, (when i lost some weight) I looked at the bigger picture and saw that i had more "broken lines" within me and some kind of contrast with the softness being in my shortened limbs/ in my face (like bigger eyes, fuller lips) and that contrast between yang and yin is much more of a Gamine Then i saw this video and i really recongnised myself in one of the different sub-types of the Gamine Tldr: It also took me a long time to find out, but found my Yin/Yang balance by looking at the bigger picture and not to focus on very specific aspects of my body/face You're welcome :)

I thought the same, I always thought I couldn't be Gamine because I'm 5'5 (166 cm) and have broad shoulders and am naturally a bit muscular (I always feel so massive although people keep assuring me that it's not as bad as I think). But I also have a defined waist and some hips, although they are not round but angular. I need a bit of waist emphasis or I'll look like a box - I often can't wear ultra high necklines if I don't pair them with high-waisted pants / skirts because my upper body will then look massive due to my shoulders. However, natural lines don't suit me. I'm too small in height and always look boxy if I just wear these more flowy, and elongated lines. "Compact gamine" opened my eyes now :) I look like a small scale natural but I am NOT a natural :D
@elaineanderson19044 жыл бұрын
I'm probably a gamine, but I never identified with the high-energy, sassy essence. This helped a lot. Small and angular doesn't have to mean high energy, and you don't have to be rounded and doll-like to have a softer yin essence. Very good video! Also, what about floral prints for gamines?
@africandaughter31104 жыл бұрын
This is one thing I'd like to know. I'm a gamine (probably more flamboyant with some soft in there lol) but definitely in the gamime category but I keep seeing that floral prints aren't for them, especially for flamboyant gamines. I like floral. Womdering if there's a way to make it work.

This video is from 3 years ago, but now is when I discovered the world of Kibbe, Kitchener and all of these related topics. I'm very short, barely 5'2". I haven't been able to fit in any of Kibbe's body types. Mostly, because of my short stature and long extremities. Audrey Hepburn, as the ultimate Gamine goddess, is far from what I look like. But, with this video, I can understand the Gamine in me with your clients' examples. I thought I was a natural, but according to Kibbe's a natural is not petite or maybe I don't understand his guidelines. So, I felt I didn't fit in any of his categories. One aspect that make me fit into Gamine is that I look great in pixie cuts. And I look 10 years younger (I'm 52!). I've been wearing a very short pixie for the past month, and everybody tells me that IT is the hairstyle for me. Thanks for this video and I'll be embracing my Gamine side, which I LOVE!

This has been so helpful. I cannot thank you enough. I've always been drawn to gamine styles and lines, but have become self conscious of them as I've gotten older (I'm nearing 40) as I've been worried about looking silly or trying too hard to appear younger. I've tried incorporating more classic and romantic styles in an effort to look more "adult" or "womanly", but have been frustrated as I often end up looking frumpy or childish. I'm realizing I should just trust what I'm naturally drawn to, and lean into the fun youthful essence of gamine which ironically does look more adult on me than anything else.

I'm a G or FG. I most likely resemble your "Angular Elf-Like Gamine". But when I gain weight I get *very* bottom-heavy which confuses me, as this phenomenon just isn't included in any description of Gamines: they seem to *always* be "leggy". I'm a bit taller than the usual Gamine (168cm/~ 5'6"), but definitely a mixture of opposites with a lot of sharpness in my face and bones - and this rather soft and big bottom + a defined waist. It almost looks like two different bodies on top vs. at the bottom. I realize no example can include everybody, but I start to question myself as no one talks about this. I know you said (at about 15:30), you excluded soft curves on purpose because you see them as a secondary trait. I have always felt those curves aren't secondary, but very important, I always have to accomodate them first when I dress - and then my sharp bones! Isn't a pear-shape and an hourglass-shape very common? I would really love to finally see someone talk about those of us, who carry their weight on the bottom - how that relates to the yin-yang-balance, and how to accomodate them properly if you're a gamine or another type.

i find kibbe's image ID system very confusing and really restrictive and now i think i understand why -- i am not small scale yang, i am small scale yin. this is why all the structured, geometrical shapes look bizarre on me and why i look nothing like the example pictures and verified celebs i fit into the soft gamine category in kibbe for the lack of a better alternative but ingenue would describe me MUCH better, thank you

I don't think I'm a gamine but I enjoy watching your videos and how beautiful it is to see women in so much variety of shapes, sizes and essence! Can't wait to see more, especially on the romantics and ingenue spectrum.

Thank you so much!!! Also, I want to be upfront in letting you know that I won’t be covering types such as TR and SC. These types exist in a system which is not my own, so I intend on covering all the main archetypes (D, N, C, R, G, I) and my personal approach to identifying them. And my main goal is to show the vast possibilities when it comes to total interrelation. I just felt I owed you this explanation ✨

Yeah, this is great. (Likely gamine or gamine essence as a TR.) "Interest" really solidified something for me, because I almost never identify with the outfits chosen for gamines. Like... what if you're a gamine who needs a nap? 😂 I may wear a dragon earring one day, but I'm not clothing myself in high drama- almost ever. My style veers more classic/romantic/natural in it's simplicity... with hints of INTEREST! Thank you for this video, it's helped a lot.

I am a short compact gamine (think shetland pony) and I really don't like geometric shapes or garments with too much structure. I don't mind plaids or small gingham prints, and a denim jacket is as close to structure as I get and still feel comfortable

Thanks a ZILLION, Elyssa!!! My gamine suspicions CONFIRMED!!! I had recognized my juxtaposition but had never seen anyone validate it. I'm yin where most gamines yang, and yang where a lot of gamines yin... so this was a most excellent run-down of the variations within the type. LOVE-LOVE-LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!! 💖

This was so amazingly done! I had just rewatched your Ingenue video yesterday, since I'm currently trying to discern my essence on my own - just a fun little journey I'm taking to get to know myself better. I was trying to determine if I had a touch Ingenue or Gamine and this really solidified that I lean Ingenue, not Gamine. Thank you so much! Keep up the wonderful work! Can't wait to see if you do more of these for the other essences in the future!

So in depth and great video! Ive been struggling to know what category I fall into but thanks to your video I feel like it confirms that im a famine. I know it’s a lot but what would make it even more perfect is taking clients’ color season into consideration as well. Some of those colors weren’t the best for them.

This video content is so enlightening Elyssa! Tremendously helpful for understanding the gamine, and digging in about the little nuances between gamines & ingenues. Thank you so much! 🌸

My youger sister once said: You are short, not small. She nailed it. I also used to refer to my style as "principeso" which translate somewhat to "prince and princess looking at the same time". My favorite clothes ever was a black tailored sthle shorts with a white 3/4 blouse with a black bow neckline. Style-wise I use androginus (but not in a homogenus type), detail rich and youthful style. Or at least I try.

This video was amazing! Ive been pretty sure am I'm a gamine for some time now, but this video just put all the pieces in place! And now I have so much more understanding for my own balance. Thank you! ✨

Thank you for this video Elyssa, you have a true gift for interpreting and communicating these ideas. I struggled so much with the yin/yang stuff because I can clearly see I'm a mixture of opposites, and yet don't fit the description or examples often given in the Kibbe descriptions. I thought for a while I was a tiny "soft natural" but those lines just look wrong on me. Then I saw your examples with ladies like Simone Biles and so much clicked for me. I also love how you incorporate essence. Thank you for these videos, even though i clearly see I am gamine now I look forward to watching the videos of all the other types purely for the joy of seeing your approach and the way you communicate the information.

Oh, I am loving this, This has crystallised what I have been sensing for a long time and could not quite put my finger on. I knew I looked best in this kind of simple, crisp, almost classic get ups but kept searching for something that would be more complicated, "creative" "making a statement" and thinking my own ideas were boringly ordinary. No no no! Thanks Alyssa, you are the first style guru I have ever mused about consulting . Saving up for it, so who knows?

I spent so much time last year trying to work out what type of gamine I was but your description of all the types really cleared it up for me: I finally get it now! I loved your descriptions of the women’s essences and how they could be expressed in their clothing. So useful and enlightening! Keep up the good work, it’s most appreciated.

I really loved the way you explained the gamine in this video. I definitely fit into the compact gamine “sub-category” you described. I also appreciate you not pigeonholing gamines into needing to wear bright colors or funky prints. Thank you for sharing this video!

Your info is helpful!! I’ve struggled forever trying to figure out where I fit. I fixated on my height which is 5’8” so I thought I had to be dramatic. I look terrible in dramatic lines. But and then thinking the only other option being natural lines. I drown in those lines lol. Thanks for clearing this up!!!

Thank you so much for this video. Prior to this, I absolutely hated every style recommendations for gamines and engenues. Not only were they out of style or too extreme, they weren't practical at all for work and spaces were you need to be taken seriously.

Best video on gamines yet. I know I am one, because these high-contrast, short, tailored, horizontally broken lines just work. But the notion that gamines have a shortened vertical line or don't look tall, combined with the idea that gamines don't have as much curve, was causing me to doubt. I have very long limbs and look considerably taller than 5'4," when photographed alone. I also have a defined, moderately hourglass figure. But when next to other people, it becomes evident that my dominant characteristics are small bones, sharp angles, and high-contrast.
