The gaming industry’s labour force has had a year of reckoning.
The video game industry is richer than the global movie and music industries combined. And it’s still growing.
But a series of public scandals in recent years have revealed poor working conditions for the people making the games, as well as a culture that discriminates against women and minorities.
Will calls for unionization in the industry take off? The newest episode of Start Here reveals what’s going on behind the gaming screen.

Why did this turn into a feminism video half way through. I understand that there are mistreated women in the industry. However, that is not the main problem of the industry. The main problem is actually addressed in the beginning, the ridiculous work hours. Another major concern is the companies further alienating and milking their customers with micro transactions.

That lady from Feminist Frequency has a major problem - using questionable methods and sources to have her way. I mean at first she was portrayed as the iron willed woman going up against a Male dominated industry. The minute she gets clap back - which is something you will *alway* get when you go around provoking people - she becomes a victim. The UN even gave her an opportunity to present her case and guess what they said? "No, because she presented information from questionable sources." In summary, the industry has a problem. But the way to fix it is not by provoking people and acting like a victim when there's clap back. There are far more constructive ways of doing so. E.g. criticizing by creating. And also lost how the video went from talking about gaming to talking about women🤨🤦‍♂️

Women are not being mistreated, they are actually welcome in the video game industry. The real reason why women are the minority in the gaming industry is because there are not a lot of women that choose the type of job. Few women have chosen to enter this market. Women playing candy crush isn’t equal to ‘gaming’. They played to kill their free time which is similar to scrolling ig. I get it, it simple bite size, easy to understand, little to gain/lose. But they don’t contribute much on the ecosystem of game industry. Like someone who only live on eating beans don’t contribute to development culinary industry. Women who gaming still low imo.

It's normal for many creative industries like film (I'm in) require lots of OT and most of the time without sleep for a week or more to meet deadline. Friends working on games only let you go home 3-4 hrs a day. But during crunch time you basically sleep in the office. I'm taking about top US companies. Many companies/co-workers in Asia even despise those who can't deal with stress and call them weak. A famous Japanese game company Square that makes Final Fantasy their ppls basically sleep in front of their computers.

Nobody has to feel that way and if I could snap my fingers and stop that once and forall I would. But, that only happens in games. As I worked in this industry, I cannot say women are harrased or not because I would be biased. What I can tell you about their proportion in this industry is inverse to that men are in teaching industry. This means that there is a difference in capabilities between women and men. Given that this industry has a lot more effects of winner takes all, studios battle for quality workers such as artists and programmers than many other industries. A less capable artist could create a shader that in certain situation would significantly affect rendering performance of the game. This performance drop would be on every reviewer lips when your game is launched, and that could sink your game sales. A less capable programmer could bring crashes to the game that again would sink the sales. Therefore if you see less women or whites or certain nationalities in a studio is not a bias but a reflection of availability of the skillsets needed to make a game in people with these traits. Nobody cares who makes the game as long as it is good.

Wouldn't mind a documentary speaking about the gaming industry, but this video some how squeezed the issue into portraying it as a problem involving women inequality? I'm sure men suffer from the industry as well, or is it some kind of taboo to display men in that manner? Would have enjoyed to see how the world's most growing industry that gathers 660 million views influences and effects the people in the long run, that's real journalism. The 7 minute video felt like it was just touching the surface of things, could've been more deeper.

thats weird, isnt it that this gamer industry are mostly in California a very blue state. or is it those people that talked that they felt discriminated are just snowflakes who thinks life is all fluffy and good.

No wonder those overtly awful people have deservedly been shut out & never hired, ... yet somehow were undeservedly indulged & immorally subsdized while appeasing their own bias, discrimination, prejudice, & racism agenda, then committing violations that has intruded, imposed, & harmed innocent people. Please continue expose, confront, & ensure they are held accountable.

See I am not sure about harassment related to women as it's not related to game industry but still a really bad thing. But if you are asking why females are not much employed in the game industry so the simple answer is that Majority of female gamers are just casual gamers who play mobile games, social games, candy crush and cooking games, etc. as they prefer those simple games mostly an that's why those are not anyways passionate about games so much that they will turn it into a carer. They just thereselves don't choose game development as a field, so yeah that's not point as it's not common to find a girl interested in this field. So yeah~

Everyone talking about industry but not culture. How the change of culture results in more addiction and a change of youth culture and false aspiration. Paired with stuff like youtube and so on. Its all abou the fun but not about the consequences
